INTRODUCTION.

John, bishop of Asia or of Ephesus, was born at Amid early in the 6 t h century and educated in the Monophysite monastery of St. John in that city, where he was ordained deacon in 529. It was probably owing to a persecution of the Monophysites in Amid that he went to Palestine in 534. Next year he was at Constantinople where he was regarded till the end of his life as the head and representative of the Monophysite party. In spite of his heretical opinions he enjoyed for thirty years the constant favour and confidence of Justinian, who employed him in various important offices. In 542 he was sent by the Emperor to convert the heathen in the provinces of Asia, Lydia, Caria and Phrygia, hence his title, Bishop of Ephesus or of Asia. Four years later he was employed in Constantinople to search out and instruct those who secretly practised heathen rites. This desire to convert was probably, from the Emperor's side at least, dictated by political necessity rather than by religious fervour. Patriotism was undeveloped, men were adherents of party, and in a nominally Christian state the numerous adherents of the old religions would have welcomed with joy any attempt to overthrow the national religion, including the ruler who professed it,

In 565 Justinian died and six years later his successor, Justin II, instituted a persecution of the Monophysites. It was during' this peaceful interval that John revised (569) his early work, Biographies of Eastern Saints, which he had composed when a monk in the convent of St. John at Amid. The book includes a history of the convent from its foundation to the year 568. But his greatest literary work is his Ecclesiastical History, in three parts, of which the first and second covered the period from J U L I U S CAESAR to the seventh year of Justin II. Part I is entirely lost; much of part I I was transcribed by the compiler formerly known as Dionysius of Tell Mahre and is contained in part III of his Chronicles. Fart III was found in a monastery in the Desert of Scete, Egypt, brought to the British Museum in 1843, published by W. CDRKTON 1853, translated into English by R. P A Y N E SMITH, 1860, and into GERMAN by Schön felder, 1862. It covers from 571 to 585 when the author probably died, aged somewhere near 80, Valuable as a history of contemporary eventB, it suffers from want of order and continuity, some facts already described are related over again, a just sequence of events is not observed and many faults of language and composition can be found. For ihe author, imprisoned or in hiding, was obliged to write hastily and to leave his pages in different places for safe keeping, and opportunities for collection and revision never came to him. Thus Book III relates the growing madness of Justin and the appointment of Tiberius as Caesar, and later thé abdication of the Emperor. But the instances of signal folly on the part of Justin, which brought his infirmities home

YII even to his own mind and made him consent to this transference of power, are placed in Book YI. The order in which the author arranged the chapters is, however, here retained; those being selected as far as possible which form a connected narrative. Book V which I have altogether omitted gives first, accounts of heretics, next the history of the Emperor Maurice who succeeded Tiberius in 582. Whereas the matters related in Book TI, partly precede but for the most part follow the history given in Book III. As for the language and style, they are for the most part simple. But, as some of the Byzantine-Greek words have meanings other than those given in ordinary dictionaries or such as refer only to Byzantine customs, I have thought it advisable to include explanations in the notes, which further contain such geographical and historical indications as may make the subject matter of the book sufficiently clear.
