Poggenpohl and Electrolux Grand Cuisine have partnered to launch The Fourth Wall, a reimagining of the kitchen that turns it into a versatile space that allows areas to be neatly hidden or revealed at the touch of an iPad.

The concept includes six traditional spaces in the kitchen including the butler’s pantry, larder, wine store, pastry counter, preparation bench and dining area. Taking its name from the classic theatre convention that references an imagined boundary between the audience and actors, the kitchen has been designed to break down the barrier between host and guest. SALICE. TITANIUM. WARMTH AND TECHNOLOGY: TITANIUM FINISH. The new titanium inish perfectly integrates the hinge into the design of the cabinet conveying a sensation of warmth and at the same time incorporating modern functionality. The colour, new and different compared with the traditional blued or nickel-plated inishes, is less invasive and has a muted sheen. The titanium relections make this hinge ideal in combination with darker interiors and with the numerous shades of wood available. The good relection properties and the technological aspect of the hinge allow a perfect integration with the place where it is to be inserted, also suitable in the lightest interiors. The corrosion strength is considerably increased compared to the classic nickel-plated inish. T

We also speak to product designer Robin Platt about his Xeno² collection for Keramag Design, and starting on page 28, he tells us how stepping into the bathroom sector has been a challenging but ultimately rewarding experience. In fact, there is plenty of bathroom talk this month, with our extensive round-up of the latest bathroom trends and a look at some key highlights from the recent Cersaie show in Italy. It makes for a lively mix that sets us up nicely for the 2014 Designer Kitchen & Bathroom Awards gala presentation luncheon which takes place this month. I hope to see you at Supernova in London on 12 November but, failing that, don’t miss next month’s magazine which will feature all the winners of the most important design accolades in the industry.

Bofi Chelsea

Boffi Chelsea and Living Divani presented their new showroom partnership during the London Design Festival in September. The collaboration has a certain synergy given that both Italian companies share the same art director and designer, Piero Lissoni. The addition of Living Divani’s upholstered furniture complements Boffi’s kitchen, bathroom and wardrobe offering, adding warmth and

depth, transforming the showroom to present a broader interiors range. The 600 sq m showroom has a softer, more domestic look, with Living Divani’s upholstered furniture placed around Boffi’s kitchen and bathroom settings to form a series of large dramatic living areas. The Fourth Wall 22

Poggenpohl and Electrolux Grand Cuisine’s new Fourth Wall concept brings real drama to the kitchen

Poggenpohl and Electrolux Grand Cuisine have partnered to launch The Fourth Wall, a reimagining of the home kitchen that turns it into a highly conigurable space that allows areas to be neatly

hidden or revealed at the touch of a button. The Fourth Wall introduces a new take encompassing the six traditional spaces in the kitchen including the butler’s pantry, larder, wine store,

pastry counter, preparation bench and dining area. Taking its name from the classic theatre convention that references an imagined boundary between the audience and actors, the kitchen has been designed

to break down the barrier between host and guest. The concept has been created with open-plan living in mind, but allowing the space to change emphasis by hiding or revealing certain

Much like a traditional larder, The Fourth Wall larder allows easy access to ingredients but also features humidity and temperature control settings. The illuminated space is intended to act as a reminder and inspiration of the seasonal ingredients kept in store

aspects. Intelligent surfaces mimic theatre curtains and shift from solid lacquer to complete transparency at the touch of a switch. Stateof-the-art technology allows kitchen spaces, such as the pantry and wine cellar, to

be hidden and revealed to facilitate a smooth transition from cooking area to dining room within the same space. Andrew Hays, Fourth Wall Creative Director, Poggenpohl, said: “For

decades, trends in kitchen design have been moving towards visually concealing every element within the kitchen to the point where its function as a food and preparation space is not its primary focus.

“I drew my inspiration from the early kitchens where the function informed its layout. These kitchens were ‘living’ spaces, celebrating food and the cooking process.” i

Right: Separate from the food preparation area where the meal is created, the shelves of the butler’s pantry are stacked with crockery and glasses. Designed to be illuminated early in the evening, the area can be ‘closed down’ once the dirty plates begin to pile up – and includes a doublesided drawer in which the used plates can be stored from the dining area and then retrieved inside the pantry. It also features a dedicated bar, coffee station and ice bucket

pg

Below: Technology drawer to store and charge phones and iPads

These spaces also had more of the ‘machinery’ of the kitchen on show, something that Hays found intriguing and something that perhaps didn’t have to be incompatible with today’s way of life. “Once I had the concept for a more visible, sensory kitchen I explored the use of intelligent surfaces, in particular, the use of glass that transforms

seamlessly from transparent to opaque so that areas of the kitchen can be shut down as required. “Lighting is also extremely important so I devised an App to mood control the lights. This includes Entertaining, Cook and Dream, a soft focus setting for when you are contemplating what ingredients you have

and what to cook. The lighting control system was speciically designed for the kitchen and incorporates adjustable colour temperature so that the lights can be adapted when you are preparing diferent ingredients to show them at their best. For instance ish and vegetables look freshest under cool light, meat responds to warm light.”

Grow lamps have also been installed in one corner of the kitchen to sustain a lemon tree and garden herbs, ensuring fresh ingredients are always to hand Central to the concept is the focus on good food and fresh ingredients. Speciallydesigned ixtures mean that everything – from fruit and vegetables to meat and ish i

– will be held in the correct conditions of temperature and humidity until ready for preparation. The concept display – at Poggenpohl’s showroom in Waterloo, London – has been created to inspire, but the company is keen to emphasise that the ideas can be scaled to work in much smaller spaces, and with individual components able to work in isolation rather than purely as a whole. Accompanying the kitchen is a range of appliances from

Electrolux Grand Cuisine, including built in Grand Cuisine blast chiller and Grand Cuisine multifunction steam oven. There is also a surround induction hob, gas hob, induction hob, sear hob, and precision vacuum sealer for sous vide. Lars Erikson, Head of Design at Electrolux, said: “We transformed the domestic market in 2012 when we introduced Electrolux Grand Cuisine, an entirely new cooking system. Our vision when designing the range was to bring our 70 years

of experience working with Michelin Star chefs to the home and encourage a new level of cooking. “The Fourth Wall concept by Poggenpohl is a natural it for us – it redeines the kitchen space and is inspired by treating the inest produce with deserved respect.” d

Hall’s background is in architecture and theatre design. “I enjoy bold visual statements but I also pay great attention to the iner details,” he explains. “For instance, the Poggenpohl graphic has been used on the brass vegetable baskets in the pantry, it is also embossed on to the reverse of the brass handles, it can’t be seen but it can be felt and gives extra grip. “With the creative use of lighting, eclectic mix of inishes and textures, The Fourth Wall engages with the senses and engenders an emotional response. I have a holistic approach to design which, by drawing on a variety of inspirations and elements, falls somewhere between architecture and theatre.”

Robin Platt, designer of Keramag Design’s new Xeno² collection, on the thinking behind the new range, and why he relishes the challenge of designing outside of the comfort zone

DESIGNER: What is your background and what initially led you to a career in design? ROBIN PLATT: Despite no design background during my school years, I wound up at London College of Furniture in my early twenties. I had arrived believing I would become a furniture maker, but quickly realised there was a wider world of design to explore. Four years later, I won the New Designers award with my degree piece aluminium chair, which was my launch pad into founding my own studio.

Having vertical sides to the ceramic always creates a better opportunity for modular furniture – a block on a block next to a block kind of thing. These architectural building blocks are very effective, but it’s surprisingly difficult to settle on detail. We decided against handles for a minimal look, but the key detail was to have a thin 7mm visible edge to the door/drawer fronts, with a generous 7mm gap to the cabinet. This creates a very bold shadow line giving the drawer fronts the illusion of hovering in front of the cabinets. It also usefully gives plenty of room for the ‘push to open’ mechanism to work.

PLATT: Whether a chair, a plate or a washbasin, there will be some functional parameters that have to be honoured, taking into account both ergonomics and manufacturing processes. I think ‘unique’ to me was the learning curve in a new sector. Very ably mentored by some of the Sanitec design team, I became familiar with some of these rules, which then gave me the freedom to work with the same approach that I apply to all my work. I like the Raymond Loewy quote: ‘Most Advanced Yet Acceptable’ (MAYA). I think the asymmetric washbasins in Xeno² are a good example of this principle.

DESIGNER: What are the key design strands/themes behind your Xeno² designs?

DESIGNER: How did your collaboration with Keramag Design come about?

PLATT: Certainly the main exploration was a kind of wet/ dry, hard/soft language. After a long refinement process we ended up with very soft bowl areas set into strong geometric rectangles. The

PLATT: Actually, no one has told me exactly who spotted me as a candidate. I can only assume that it was thanks to all the work I did in tableware ceramics for Rosenthal. When someone does

DESIGNER: What are the challenges unique to designing bathroom products that have not been factors in some of your previous work in other sectors?

DESIGNER: How is technology (or production methods in general) changing what is possible in bringing some of your design ideas to reality? PLATT: 15 years ago all of my design communication was with a pencil, backed up by scale models made by hand. The advance in 3D software

and rapid prototyping has completely changed workflow for everybody. Sanitec make a lot of beautiful full scale models as part of the evaluation process, but the original evaluation and the data for these models will have been computer generated. The true value of the digital world is that you can cycle through more ideas. The more you give yourself to edit, hopefully the better the final result! DESIGNER: What scope is there for future development in the home – kitchen and bathroom in particular? Are there any products that you feel are ripe for enhancement or improvement or aspects of the domestic environment that we should have moved on from by now? PLATT: That’s a big question, but I think the truth is that all these environments have evolved very happily and successfully over a long period of time. There are no ‘magic bullet’ designs that are democratic for everybody as we live in homes that have all kinds of historical or architectural individuality. The palette of choice we have regarding styles, materials and indeed price is pretty overwhelming. I think the skill is in the sourcing of the right things that will fit with each other. i

Also I think there can be dangers in getting too ‘smart’ with design in an efort to be modern. Being outfoxed by technology is one of the most exasperating experiences, when really you just want intuitive and visible controls. If you can’t turn on a hob or get the lights on in the bathroom as a irst time user, it could be argued that we are complicating the world. DESIGNER: Where do you feel British design stands on the international stage right now and in what ways do you think this may have changed over recent years? PLATT: British design education has always been respected worldwide. Much of the really big industrial design happens behind closed doors and will continue to do so, with British backsides illing important roles all over the world. British design studios seem to win a lot of big contracts, so all seems healthy. What I think has changed in the last years is the general public awareness to design. The growth of the London Design Festival in September is testament to a nation getting excited by design, from the small start-up companies right through to the big brands – they all muck in together for an exciting week of events. This has almost a carnival atmosphere and proves the heartbeat is strong.

DESIGNER: Which of your past projects have been your own personal favourites? PLATT: I think the irst would have to be Blister for Driade. It was our irst project with some tooling investment in the curved plastic doors. I remember seeing a ‘wall of Blister’ at the Cologne trade fair 1999 and feeling like we had really arrived! Another favourite has to be Free Spirit for Rosenthal in 2004. This was my irst serious solo project and I was very satisied at the balance between lamboyance and seriousness of the diferent shapes. Lufthansa now use a version of it in their business class, so the design has run and run. DESIGNER: What new projects are you working on now, and are there any new product areas you would like to work on in the future that you have not been involved with so far? PLATT: This question is close to my heart. I have been working on a self-initiated project that takes me to a diferent area. I have had a new concept for an oice task chair. I’m on my third working prototype, and am maybe on the verge of partnering with a great company to develop it. I’ve loved every minute of getting back into the workshop. So it’s either been a crazy waste of time, or it may be one of the best things I’ve done. For my sanity I rather hope it’s the latter! d

Multistorey Style 42

This imposing London townhouse is a new-build with a retained façade that boasts seven bedrooms and an underground leisure complex including swimming pool. The house had been divided into four flats but they were acquired separately over a number of years by an international buyer with a large family who commissioned SHH Architects to turn them into this stunning home. The house is on five levels with the kitchen and casual living space on the garden level, reached by steps from the front door but opening onto the rear terrace. There are 13 bathrooms and WC’s in the house due to its size of over 10,000 sq ft. Each bedroom has a full ensuite facility and every living space has a nearby WC. The client felt that it was important for each ensuite to have a separate bath and shower wherever possible. There was also a need to maximise the number of washroom areas due to the vertical nature of the house. The ‘her’ master ensuite is a luxurious area, flowing on from ‘her’ wardrobes, with details such as mirror framing which marry through. With light and

bright finishes, this is a space to spend time in and has the advantage of looking over the large landscaped garden. Guy Matheson, Associate Director, SHH, said: “We believe lighting plays a crucial role in all our interiors, especially in bathroom spaces where it is key to provide functional lighting for tasks such as makeup application, but also to avoid making the space sterile by flooding it with powerful global lighting. In her ensuite, in addition to the chandelier, we included task downlights in the shower, WC and above the centre of the basin.” He adds that the vanity mirror has frosted glass portions to throw an even light onto the face when using the mirror. The glazed screen has a strip light mounted above it for a soft glow in the evening, or use as a night light. A general pendant is there for glowing light, whilst uplighting behind the bath picks up the softness of the curtains. Her bathroom also has an in-built television set. The mirror is made from a special film which the TV shines through when tuned on. This way it also maintains its water integrity. The glazed panels in this bathroom are clear toughened glass with i

The first floor master bedroom has ‘his and hers’ ensuites. The ‘her’ ensuite was designed by Guy Matheson, Associate Director of SHH. The room is larger than ‘his’ ensuite and has a relaxed, luxurious vibe. Matheson used bookmatched slabs of Calacatta Ora marble for the walls and floor, placed a freestanding bath under a Verner Panton shell chandelier, and added a sandblasted, fret-patterned pane of glass to enclose the shower and shield the loo and bidet. The vanity unit is a bespoke SHH design in Corian with chrome legs, topped by a large mirror in a decorative pewter frame, while the matching mirror by the bath conceals a TV screen.

the pattern sandblasted into the rear. They are held in recessed channel fixings with the panel joints siliconed in place. The ‘his’ master ensuite is a smaller, more functional space, with only a shower. The space is finished in darker tones for a strongly masculine feel. The lighting in ‘his’ ensuite is quite different to ‘hers’ – punchy light for the shaving area, but otherwise quite dark and moody. Guy Matheson, Associate Director, SHH, said: “Above all, we wanted to create something a little bit stand-out and non-typical with more character and interest than a lot of luxury bathrooms, which can be quite bland. As a result, the vanity units were treated as a furniture item without the typical tiled surround. “We also wanted to create quite polarised masculine and feminine designs for the ‘his and hers’ master ensuites. Hers was luxurious above all with a lot of pattern, texture and strong features such as the mirror, the pendant light and the glazed screen. We also made the most of the veining in the marble by bookmatching it.” He adds that the biggest challenges in this giant of a project revolved around the stone: “The curved mosaics in the third featured bathroom

were resolved with a lot of manpower, whilst the large format slabs of marble in the master ensuites were very difficult to match and had to be driven by the veining in each type of stone.” Bathrooms adjoining the other guest rooms also have a high level of attention to detail, whilst the leisure wing changing rooms adjacent to the steam and sauna were kept simpler than a full ensuite due to their more limited functionality. They simply have a large level entry shower, wash hand basin and bench seating for getting changed. Light here was pooled over the vanity appliances with nothing in the rest of the room. The overall result though was a house with a multitude of bathroom solutions with different functional requirements but all linked together under a consistent interior style. The hard work was worth it though says Matheson: “It was a great project to work on, just because of the scale of the project, and the scale of the client’s ambition. I think it is particularly successful in its dual nature, with a formal and more traditional face presented to the world at the front and a highly contemporary series of family spaces to the rear, overlooking an unusually spacious garden.” d

Sleep 2014

Bathrooms play a central part at London’s big show for hotel design This year’s Sleep features some of the biggest bathroom brands as attention turns to the important role that bathroom design can play in the hotel sector.

46

pg

Grohe has been lead sponsor at The Sleep Event for the past nine years and it continues to view the show as an important platform to introduce new products to the hospitality sector. The selection of products being presented by the German manufacturer this year include the new Eurodisc Joystick, the powerbox that enables infrared taps to generate their own electricity and the Grohe Water and Energy Audit that can help reduce utility bills within the hospitality industry. Dornbracht, Toto, Crosswater, Bette, Laufen, Roca, Roman Showers, Twyford Bathrooms, Kaldewei, JustTapsPlus, and VitrA will also be among the exhibitors this year. As well as bathrooms, the show also covers hotel furniture, fabrics, surfaces, wallcoverings, flooring, lighting, and technology. There is also an extensive seminar programme covering a wide range of topics including: the rise of aparthotels; new ideas and the future role of technology; and the advantages and pitfalls of turning historic buildings into hotels. The results of a competition ‘The Sleep Set’ will also be revealed at the event. Entrants were asked to come up with hotel room concepts that reverse the trend of increasing complexity and explore ways to create more harmonious and intuitive experiences for hotel guests. Sleep 2014 takes place at the Business Design Centre, Islington, London (26-27 November 2014). Entry is £30 or free if registered in advance at www.thesleepevent.com

With an elegant tea column made from Ziricote wood and inspired by the 20th century avant-garde style, Wind 54 from Italian manufacturer Toncelli is distinguished by its minimal design and stark material mix. Designed by Tomasso Toncelli, the kitchen is characterised by an island structure with top and round-edged doors made of Eta Blanc cement and a table made of Ziricote wood, with a thickness of 10 cm and a cement base resting on a lowered base to avoid altering the height. The table can be self-supporting or positioned on columns against the wall. The cabinet, with six white glass doors, is presented with an imposing ‘frame’ of Ziricote wood panelling. The interiors are all white, including the ceramic knives, plate rack, drawers and the Miele appliances.

49 pg

The cabinet contains a tea column made from Ziricote wood and inspired by the 20th century avant-garde style and in particular, by the striking geometry of artist Piet Mondrian. The tea column comprises an oriental kit of unique items and accessories dedicated to the celebration of tea. It consists of a pull-out table with a tray for collecting water, a drawer, two pullouts and a secret compartment hidden on the back with a sliding opening. It can be itted inside the composition or freestanding, speciied with legs made of steel or bamboo wood. i

InHouse, the UK agent for Schüller and next125, has just returned from its largest retailer trip to Küchenmeile having introduced over 120 UK retailers to the new ranges from the brands. InHouse Managing Director Wayne Dance gave a presentation on branding and marketing, specifically aimed at the UK independent retailer as well as showing a new brand concept for Schüller and details of how the UK is supporting the global next125 campaign. “The UK independent retailer sector has to buck up,” said Dance. “We’re under threat from the sheds, home stores and online channels. We want to protect and grow our retailers’ business and the only way to do that is to build Schüller and next125 into the most recognisable brands in the UK kitchen market – and to achieve this we all need to work together. “Our presentation showed how by using targeted marketing we could turn retailers’ singular whispers into a collective big shout.” He added that over 80% of the retailers on the trip signed up immediately and says more are in the pipeline. “We are now back on the road talking to our other retailers who were unable to attend the trip. The visit to Kitchen Mile in Germany this year is the most important trip I’ve taken in my 30 years in the industry and the launch of our marketing campaign is the most exciting.” InHouse | www.inhouseuk.net Schuller | www.schuller.de www.kb-network.co.uk

Designer Portfolio The BLANCOATTIKA sink for the designfocused kitchen

Glass is Bellissimo’s crowning glory

Bellissimo has added the sophistication of glass doors to its kitchen portfolio. With 25 colours to choose from, Bellissimo’s new Genoa range combines the practicality and durability of toughened glass, with a depth of finish which no other surface can match. The glass itself carries the colour, which is enhanced by a silver backboard. This makes the most of the reflective properties of the glass and ensures longevity. Doors can be made to any size and nonstandard colours are available. “Genoa brings an exciting new dimension to our kitchen range,” said Bellissimo managing director Warnock Watson. “It’s an inspirational finish which will create a great talking point with customers. Combined with a handle-less profile rail, the end result is just stunning.”

The new handmade stainless steel BLANCOATTIKA XL 60 sink and 60-T drainer are practical additions to the BLANCO Germany STEELART range. The sink measures 520 x 420mm and has a deep bowl which is ideal for washing large pots and pans.

The high-rim surround ensures water remains in the sink and draining areas. The drainer is also slightly lowered at 35mm so it can act as a preparation area as well as a draining board. A walnut-compound food board is available which fits neatly in the draining area creating more space to chop vegetables. Alternatively, the food board can connect to both the sink and drainer creating more space to prepare food easily. The sink starts at around £1060 while the drainer is £945 inc VAT. The BLANCOCULINA-S Duo tap (pictured) costs £550.

Magical Bathroom Makeovers Reflect ‘Improve Not Move’ Trend

Kitchen and bathroom makeovers brand Granite Transformations confirms that the ‘improve not move’ boom continues, with record numbers of householders opting to upgrade where they live, rather than up sticks and move house.

Ideal Bathrooms have the exclusive national distributorship for Showerlux enclosures, which are therefore available to all leading retailers on Ideal Bathrooms’ next day delivery service and there is also a full spares service through a dedicated website, if required; www.showersealspares.co.uk.

Typical of this makeover boom is Granite Transformations’ client Susan Williams of Kent, who took the view that the family’s savings were best invested in upgrading three bathrooms and a downstairs cloakroom, with a view to increasing the value of her 4-bedroom detached property. Granite Transformations took care of the total makeovers, installing its luxurious, Nero Corallo, White Star and Nero Maltese agglomerate surfaces and Trend Liberty authentic Italian glass mosaic throughout, and Susan is delighted with the quality of the finished work.
