T

he Festschrift Series for Nigerian Linguists has gathered sufficient momentum, and now it is a house-hold name in the linguistic circle both home and abroad. The project, therefore, no longer requires any elaborate introduction. The present volume, which is the 5th in the series, is devoted to Professor Munzali A. Jibril. Professor Jibril is a celebrated icon in university administration, and an erudite Professor of English Linguistics. The title of this special edition was deliberately chosen to crown Professor Jibril’s academic prowess in both English and indigenous Nigerian languages, and to mark his official exit from active university lectureship in a GRAND STYLE. To many of us his friends, former students, colleagues and close associates, Professor Jibril represents the solid and dependable bridge between the old and young generations of Nigerian linguists. While in office as the Rector Nigerian Defence Academy, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of his University (Bayero University, Kano), and later the Executive Secretary of Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC), Professor Jibril positively touched the lives of his colleagues and friends. As Professor Jibril retires from active classroom teaching into active consultancy services, we pray and wish him well. This volume in print is our own little way to appreciate all the good deeds of this ever-shining STAR OF GOOD HOPE.

Of over 150 papers received for this volume, only 72 survived the rigours of assessment. Besides papers covering the main theme of this volume, i.e. the interaction between English and indigenous Nigerian languages, there are a number of papers on other secular areas of linguistics (e.g. language and history, language planning and policy, language documentation, language engineering, lexicography, translation, gender studies, language acquisition, language teaching and learning, pragmatics, discourse and conversational analysis) and even literature in English and African languages. There is also a rich section devoted to the major ‘traditional’ fields of linguistics (e.g. phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics). We hope our readers will find this volume quite revealing and useful in their search for quality knowledge.
