CovER.-Long smooth wig extending under the chin (b) hut leaving it free (a). Ears exposed. No heard. Entering disk sharply defined (c).

CoLOURING.-Forehead hand ~~ and eyelashes, black. Iris, redish brown. Corners of eye, red. All the rest, so far as can he seen, yellow. Fingermark in yellow on front of disk. TECHNIQUE.- Good work. Features, clean cut. PRESERVATION.- Surface rubbed and more or less pitted, especially on wig under the chin. MIDDLE E:&fPIRE. BIBL.: Cat. 18gS , No. 13lt6.

groove (a) on inside to fit corresponding projection of lid. The other two sides are of unequal height, one c. being same height as groove a, the other being ~ same height as surface b. The inside of the higher of these • two sides has also a deep square groove (c) to admit projecting edge of two rectangular blocks (see below). At each end of this square groove, a slot (d). Each end of the groove slants (g) inward while the outside ends of the rectangular blocks slant outward (h). Thus the blocks are keyed in.

"'. . L . The two blocks are cut out square (k) on inside edge of lower side to fit rim of box. The inside end of each has one edge hollowed out (p) and a rectangular hole (m) in another .

The outside end of each has a groove (g) and a slot (s) in the lower edge. The side of the groove (g) slants outward to form key fitting in groove (g) of box. Pieces of stone remain in slots (g) and slot (s) shows traces of mortar. The groove (k) also contains traces of mortar.-The floor of the box contains two grooves (t) [on opposite sides], running parallel to the side with the two blocks (I). CovER (2l-The cover has two rectangular sides with a curved roof joining them (a). ~"""'- Middle section. One side ((il) is cut out about to em. ~ deep to make room for the two rectangular blocks. The • rc. ~ ~ lower outside edge of the two opposite sides ~ :Y~ (y and 8) are grooved to fit groove a of box. ORNAMENTATION .-None. INSCRIPTION .-None. CoLOURING .-None. TECHNIQUE.-Smoothly polished. The side of lid, which is cut out, was cut out after the case had been finished. The grooves in rim indicate that the cover was made to slide on. The two blocks were made to fill up the cut in side of cover and were mortared on to the rim of box. The grooves and slots on this side in which pieces of stone were secured, were to assist in keeping the blocks in place. The two blocks are not so smoothly finished as the rest. CoN'fENTS .-None. PRESERVATION .-Corners chipped off. by a long crack.

TECHNIQUE.- Hieroglyphics and enclosing lines, drawn in black. The points are to be seen through which the lines were drawn. On one corner, a piece had been chipped out before the case was finished. TECHNIQUE.- Somewhat better cut than the heads on Nos. 4ogo-4og2. Smoothed , not polished. Disk, poorly formed. PRESERVATION.-Edge of head, just above the eyes, chipped slightly.
