Publications in Modern Chinese Language and Literature Publications in Modern Chinese Language and Literature is a new series intended for intermediate- and advanced-level students and teachers of Chinese, as well as for others who may be interested in modern Chinese studies from a disciplinary viewpoint of linguistics or comparative literature. In the light of rapidly expanding cultural contacts between China and the West, there is a clear need for newly designed, systematic study materials which will reflect the ever-widening range of linguistic and literary realities facing the contemporary student or scholar. Preface

In September, 1980, the University of Leyden made some significant additions to its course program in Chinese language and literature.

Specifically, stu-

dents having completed the first three years of basic sinological training were offered new options in their choice of a field for advanced study and specialization. Parallel to the time-honored offerings in philology, history, literature and other traditional fields of scholarship, a new block of "general" electives, called in Dutch the algemene studievariant or A. S. V . , was set up for students whose c a r e e r goals lay not in teaching-and-research but in other fields of activity outside the university.

The A. S. V. was designed to equip students with the foundational competence

necessary for possible later employment in the worlds of business, publishing, journalism, etc.

explicitly practical orientation had to be developed.

The present book represents

a much-expanded revision of the materials prepared for A. S. V. students of business and correspondence Chinese. In acknowledging the assistance we have received in the preparation of this book, we must begin with the students in the first A. S. V. c l a s s .

Not only have we

profited from their comments and reactions, but they provided considerable help in the compilation of examples. Thanks are also dueto allthosewho conscientiously collected material for the Practical Vocabulary. Gertie Mulder collated, arranged, and annotated the entire Practical Vocabulary as well as the Miscellaneous Expressions in the concluding section of Chapter III.

Elly Hagenaar contributed many

hours of patient typing during the preparation of the final version. As for the written sources from which we have profited, we may refer in general to the List of Works Consulted.

A more individual word of acknowledg-

ment, however, is owed to two of our sources: Chen Yaonan's Yingyongwen gaishuo (Hong Kong, 1976) and Chugoku shogyS boeki shoshinbun by Tanaka Shu (Tokyo, 1973). Many of the example sentences in our Chapter HI occur, wholly or in part, in these works; we have adapted these examples by adding translations and annotations as required for the purposes of this book.

footnotes to the individual items in view of the already rather complex typography and layout, we wish to state frankly our special indebtedness to these sources. Needless to say, all examples throughout the book a r e purely suggestive in nature; they a r e presented for illustrative purposes only and a r e not intended as references to the actual past or present practice of any existing business,

Throughout the book, except for well-known geographical names, Chinese words a r e cited in the Pinyin transcription.

Where a Chinese expression is cited

both in transcription and in characters, the translation follows the characters and is placed within single quotation m a r k s : j j :

'page.' A slash mark (/) is used

to separate alternatives within this formula, while parentheses indicate optional elements.

means that fan zhuan, fan jiao, zhuan, and jiao may all occur as equivalents to the English ' c a r e o f . ' The English translation will indicate whether the alternatives separated by the slash m a r k a r e single characters or longer expressions. Thus in jîng qmg/fân/lâo

In a vernacular letter, the Second Half can be as simple as hao •4J 'wishing you well'; in the People's Republic of China, the expression jingli

'sa-

lute ' is also used as a Greeting at the end of a letter, in which case the First Half, as described above, is usually omitted.

H. 32 Signature The signature is prefaced by a term of self-referral.

This may be the

same one used in the Body of the letter, or the sender's official title. In the latter case, the full name of the company or organization is usually given.

The expres-

sion of self-referral, written in small characters, begins slightly past the midpoint of the paper.

In the vertical format, it is placed toward the right half of the

column; in the horizontal style it is placed in the upper half of the line. As a rule, the sender signs his full name.

It must be clearly and legibly

written, even if it is not done in the block (kaishu or 'model') style of handwriting. This is definitely not a place where virtuosity in exotic calligraphy should be demonstrated, as this signature is the one and only occurrence of the sender's name in the letter.

Immediately after the name of the sender, a Chinese writer may

affix his personal seal which, depending on the taste of the individual writer, may bear any of various styles of the Chinese script, ranging from modern to archaic, block to cursive. The signature of the sender is followed by a final term of respect. general purposes, this may be any variation of the term jing/jin C[I

jin qi are all acceptable. This term of respect is written in smaller

characters

and placed to the right of and slightly below the sender's name, whether the paper being used is of the horizontal or the vertical variety.

11.33 Date The date, written in very small characters, either follows the final term of respect, if there is space, or is placed in the next column or line,

starting

from a position approximately parallel to the mid-point of the sender's name. The dating is in the sequence of year, month, day.

11.34 Postscript A postscript should be put in the next column or line after the signature and date.

It is prefaced by any of the following expressions and concluded by the

signing of the sender's surname.

If the postscript is written on a date later than

that indicated previously, this fact should be noted under the surname.

Chapter III: Example Sentences

This chapter begins with a list of common honorifics and humble forms. These typically recurrent elements have been described in section n . 23 above; the list provided here may be studied as an introduction to the stock vocabulary of the annotated sentences which follow. As explained in the Introduction, most of this chapter consists of pairs of left and right pages in which each numbered item on the top left (vernacular) page corresponds to the identically numbered item on the top right (literary/classical) side.

Similarly numbered English versions and vocabulary annotations follow in

the bottom left and bottom right positions, respectively.

The final section, "Mis-

cellaneous Expressions," containing a high proportion of short phrases and incomplete sentences, departs slightly from this format. In it, each page is a unit, with the English translations in sequence following directly under the identically numbered Chinese examples. As many of the vocabulary items in these examples a r e of very general applicability, they do not easily lend themselves to strict classification by subject matter.

We regret,

however, to inform you that the 2nd c a s e was improperly packed and the 5th case contains goods of a different quality.

More specifically:

The second case was apparently not made watertight.

Consequently, the

600 yards of silk material, AX 414, is water-stained, mildewed, and no longer fit for sale. The 900 yards of brocade, AX 535, found in the 5th c a s e is s i m i l a r in color and in prints to what we had ordered, but obviously much inferior in quality. I am sending you a cutting of it, together with the sample you sent m e initially, f o r you to examine and compare. Our experiences with you have always been satisfactory, and we have never before encountered such situations as the above.

We trust that, in view of

your large volume of business, this must be one of those r a r e accidentalmistakes. However, as we urgently need these goods to meet seasonal demand, we would appreciate it greatly if you could make the necessary adjustments without delay, for our mutual benefit.
