PREFACE This edition of Book 2 of the AUA

Language Center Thai Course is a direct

continuation of the 1967 edition of Book I and should be used only by students who have studied from that book; for without Book I as a background, even students whose vocabulary and sentence patterns go far beyond it might often find themselves in tonal difficulties. In any case a student of Book 2 should also have a copy of Book I for its introduction (which applies in every detail to Book 2 as well), its explanation of the transcription symbols used, and the numerous notes and drills in it that are referred to in Book 2. The present edition is a major revision of the earlier course and has benefited greatly from suggestions made by the following teachers who taught that course: Matana Chutrakul, Niphapharn Chutrakul, Nitaya Amaraket,

Saengthong Beokhaimook, Srim

Nolrajsuwaj,

Khomsan Hathaidharm, and Preecha Ratanodom. These same teachers also read the revision and made corrections, as did Peter J. Bee of the London School of Oriental and African Studies. But with all the changes that have been made, most of the dialogs are still basically those written several years ago by Churee lndaniyom.

•aassifters. There are three different ways of counting things in English. Unit Substance I. a day (of time) 2. a bottle of beer 3. a (rod of) pencil In the first type, the unit implies the 'substance' (a day doesn't measure anything besides time), and the substance isn't mentioned.

In the second type, both unit and substance must be mentioned since, for example, a bottle measures things other than beer, and beer can come in units other than bottles. In the third type, the word for the substance implies the unit. Iron can come in sheets, rods, balls, etc., but pencils only in 'rods'. The unit isn't mentioned. • There are, however, a few words in English that are like type three in meaning but type two in form: a head of lettuce, a head of cattle, a sheet of paper, a stick of dynamite, a pair of scissors. Thai has only types one and two. When counting things in Thai, the unit (classifier) must always be mentioned: 2 rods of pencil, 2 rolls of cigarette, 2 bodies of dog. The following dialogue might help illustrate the function of classifiers. speaker ends up grasping for a classifier that doesn't exist.

Writing.

The Thai words for 'sandwich', 'tennis', and 'foot' (the measurement) are JEtnwft, The English final sounds ch, s, and t are all pronounced the same in Thai. The sounds ch and s do not occur at the end of Thai words; the abrupt way of closing off syllables does not permit them. But even though the final sounds of these three words arc pronounced alike, the Thai spelling shows the English distinctions. thennft, and jut.

Over the centuries, Thai has borrowed hundreds and hundreds of words from Sanskrit and Pali, and it is still doing so today in order to supply most of its technical vocabulary (as English does from Latin and Greek). These words are, of course, pronounced with Thai sounds, but their spellings reflect the source language. So even though Thai (unlike English) has a regular way of writing all of its sounds, the irregularities arising from borrowings pose a real spelling problem. Thai syllables can have only nine different consonant endings: p. t, k, m, n, IJ, y, w, and ? ; but these nine endings can be spelled in over a hundred different ways. This presents no· big problem when reading: all the reader has to do is to cut the ending off short and he will almost always be right. (For example, try to stop the sound after the vowel in the following English words as abruptly as possible: mar, mad, mass, mash, match, Madge. They all sound like mat.) But to write irregular words correctly, the spelling must be memorized. (Of course, the English speaker will have no difficulty remembering the endings of SEEnwft and thennft; and the person who knows Sanskrit and Pali will have little trouble with words like rdatpras61J.) When a consonant occurring in the source language is not pronounced at all, the symbol called karan (see sap~Jt and ?athft below) is written over it. It is a 'consonant silencer'. The sounds of the consonant letters when in syllable final position are shown below. The first letter of each group is the regular one. m
