Foreword Translated by Claude Detienne When we presented to the public our first volume of Acta Martyrum et Sanctorum less than two years ago, we dared to hope to be able to publish two more. Today that hope has been fully realized and, if we were not obliged to suspend our work because of more urgent publications, we could have immediately begun the fourth volume, the materials of which have already been collected. So it is just a matter of time. Among the Lives we publish in this third volume, only those of St. Thomas, St. Ephrem and the holy Maccabee Martyrs had already been published. We copied all the others from unpublished manuscripts, so two thirds of these pages are being published for the first time. Piety as well as literature and history will be able to draw widely on the new treasures we bring within everyone's reach. Our goal does not allow us to enter into long explanations which would carry us too far. We know well that, historically speaking, some accounts contain inaccuracies. We tried to remedy this by putting small footnotes at the bottom of each page in order to help the reader avoid errors. A word about the sources from which we drew the Lives of the saints we inserted in this third volume. 1° We took the Story of St. Thomas the Apostle in the Apocryphal Acts of the Apostles published by the learned Mr. Wright in London in 1871. The Sachau manuscript num. 222 of the Berlin Royal Library helped us greatly to fill in some lacunas and to correct some passages of the edition based upon the British Museum manuscript. To be fair, we should
1
say that the British Museum manuscript is generally more accurate and complete than the Berlin manuscript. As we could not write down all of the many variants, we chose those which could be of some value. 2° We copied from the same Berlin manuscript the First Finding of the Cross, the Life of Sts. Cyprian and Justina and the Life of St. Mikha, without being able to compare them to another copy. 3° We owe to the same source the Lives of St. Placidus or Eustace, St. Cyrus and St. Isaiah of Aleppo. We wanted to have them collated with the manuscripts of the National Library in Paris, but the writing is completely different. Therefore we had to abandon the idea to our greatest regret. 4° The same manuscript gave us the Story of the Finding of the Corpses of St. Stephen, Nicodemus, Gamaliel and his Young Son, Habib, and the Acts of the Martyrdom of St. Ignatius and of Sts. Sergius and Bacchus. The learned Mr. Guidi from Rome was kind enough to collate them with the copies of the Vatican Library. So we were able to give a more accurate and complete text. To revise the story of St. Ignatius, we also used Cureton's Corpus Ignatianum, which we borrowed from Mgr. Lamy, Professor at the University of Louvain. Father Chabot, a young priest from the Diocese of Tours, a very promising orientalist, generously lent us the notebook in which he had copied the Story of St. Eugene in London (Add. 12174). We had the same life in the Berlin manuscript, but we generally followed the text of the British Museum which seemed more sober and accurate. However, the text of Berlin supplied us with an important contribution. Without the possibility of writing down all the variants, we made a choice that seemed satisfactory to guide the reader in his studies.
2
Variants drawn on Father Chabot's copy are noted as Cod. Londiniensis. 6° We took the Life of St. Daniel from the Berlin manuscript. Father Chabot was kind enough to collate our copy with manuscript num. 295 of the National Library in Paris. 7° The Story of the forty Martyrs of Sebaste and the Story of Sts. Barbara and Juliana were copied from manuscripts num. 234 and 235 of the National Library in Paris. As the latter was not quite up to the mark, we asked two English orientalists to compare them with more accurate copies in their country, offering a payment for their trouble, but we obtained nothing and had to publish them as we could. Mr. Rubens Duval was kind enough to copy the Life of St. Bisoes or Pesoes, whom we call Mar Bishoo, from the manuscript num. 236 of the National Library in Paris. Our fellow, Mr. Salomon, sent us another copy from Persia which is much more extensive. We combined both copies to complete the story of that solitary saint who is honoured particularly among Nestorians. 9° The Story of St. Ephrem had been published in 1743 in Rome in the third volume of his works. Father Martin copied from the manuscripts of the Library of Paris the life of that saintly doctor, written differently than the life of Rome. Mgr. Lamy published it according to Father Martin's copy in his Unpublished Works of St. Ephrem. We preferred the latter, which we adopted, while borrowing from the first what could make the story we give here more complete. We only reproduced significant variants which could be of some help to the reader. 10° We copied literally from the Bible the Martyrdom of Eleazar and of the Seven Maccabee Brothers, whose feast
3
is celebrated in the Chaldean liturgy and to whom several churches have been consecrated. Moriatur anima mea morte justorum, etJiant novissima mea horum similia (Num 23,10) ANS-LEZ-LIEGE, the 9th april 1892
