Sériés Editors Monica Blanchard Cari Griffïn Kristian Heal George Anton Kiraz David G.K. Taylor

The Syriac Studies Library brings back to active circulation major reference works in the field of Syriac studies, including dictionaries, grammars, text editions, manuscript catalogues, and monographs. The books were reproduced from originals at The Catholic University of America, one of the largest collections of Eastern Christianity in North America. The project is a collaboration between CUA, Beth Mardutho: The Syriac Institute, and Brigham Young University.

Series Foreword

This series provides reference works in Syriac studies from original books digitized at the ICOR library of The Catholic University of America under the supervision of Monica Blanchard, ICOR's librarian. The project was carried out by Beth Mardutho: The Syriac Institute and Brigham Young University. About 675 books were digitized, most of which will appear in this series. Our aim is to present the volumes as they have been digitized, preserving images of the covers, front matter, and back matter (if any). Marks by patrons, which may shed some light on the history of the library and its users, have been retained. In some cases, even inserts have been digitized and appear here in the location where they were found. The books digitized by Brigham Young University are in color, even when the original text is not. These have been produced here in grayscale for economic reasons. The grayscale images retain original colors in the form of gray shades. The books digitized by Beth Mardutho and black on white. We are grateful to the head librarian at CUA, Adele R. Chwalek, who was kind enough to permit this project. "We are custodians, not owners of this collection," she generously said at a small gathering that celebrated the completion of the project. We are also grateful to Sidney Griffith who supported the project.

INTRODUCTION The contents of this book have been compiled as a guide for both British and Assyrian personnel of the 'Iraq Levies to acquire a colloquial knowledge of the respective languages. There are many dialects spoken by the Assyrian tribes; but since they have been intermingled both in the various refugee camps and whilst serving in the 'Iraq Levies, many words have become common to all. The vocabulary consists of about one thousand words used in general conversation. Shamasha Yoseph E. Y. de Kelaita, the Headmaster of the Assyrian School Mosul, is regarded as one of the best authorities of the Syriac language and the special thanks of the author are due to him for having read the proofs and undertaking the entire printing of the book. The special thanks of the author are also due* to Rab Emma Sham Giwergis M. B. E. 4th. Battalion 'Iraq Levies, formerly a schoolmaster of Baz, who gave much of his spare time in helping to prepare the work. It is impossible exactly to represent some of the Syriac sounds in Roman letters, and the notes on pronunciation should be carefully followed. The same remark applies to English sounds written in Syriac and the Assyrian student is advised to read this work in conjunction with the "English Primary Grammar" by J. E. Y. de Kelaita. A military vocabulary with words of command has been added on account of numerous requests from Assyrian Levy

Officers: the English words beingwritten i n the Syriac form only, as an attempt to translate them would serve no useful purpose. A special note is made with legard to the English letter " v " as some doubt exists as to whether it has, any corresponding value in Syriac. In this book it „¿s represented by the Syriac letter j (beth rkikhta), and Assyrian students should tote the difference between ^ and o, (wawj : being shewn as an English " v " and o as an Engliàh ^'w'^). Alternatively English students should note that thé' ' Syriac word written in E should be pronou~
