FOREWORD Some explanation may be needed on the first two indices. 'Index Nominum (i)' lists proper names which appear in the text; a note in the Commentary is indicated by bold type. 'Index Nominum (ii)', to Commentary, Introduction, and Appendices, excludes references listed under 'Index Nominum
(i)'. Some of the Addenda and Corrigenda have appeared in reviews or been communicated privately. I am particularly indebted in this respect to Professor Rudolf Kassel of Berlin. But I have not attempted to compile the 'literature' which has been published since the several volumes of this edition went to the printers, or to argue controversial points. It will perhaps be noticed that some of the reinterpretations of Cicero' s Greek appearing in my notes are to be found in the Supplement to Liddell and Scott's lexicon published in 1968. That was possible because they had originally appeared in papers published in the ClassicalQuarterly in 1962 and 1963. I have again to thank Mr James Diggle for reading the proofs of this volume.
