INTRODUCTION

T

he second, enlarged and re-arranged edition of this Bibliography has been compiled to offer an overview of relevant Armenological publications that have appeared in scholarly journals and periodicals in western languages since the publication of the first edition under the title An Index ofArticles on Armenian Studies in Western Journals (London: Luzac & Co., 1975).1 Armenian studies has grown into an important field as is shown, for instance, by the renewed vigour and quality of the annual international conferences of Armenian studies and the founding of new journals exclusively devoted to Armenian research. Since 1975, several important journals have been established to serve Armenian studies: The Journal of the Society for Armenian Studies (I, 1984- ) is published by the Society for Armenian Studies, founded in 1974 by a group of scholars from the Universities of California, Harvard and Columbia to promote the study of Armenian culture and society, including history, language and literature. The Journal ofArmenian Studies (I, 1975- ) is devoted to the broad field of Armenian Studies and is sponsored by the National Association for Armenian Studies and Research. Serving the needs of scholars concerned with linguistics and related problems that touch in any way on Armenian language - classical, medieval and modern - is the Annual ofArmenian Linguistics (1, 1980- ), published by Cleveland State University. For the first time serving the needs of those interested in Armenian poetry and criticism in translation is the journal Raft: a Journal of Armenian Poetry and Criticism (I, 1987- ), which has filled an important area. The Societe des Etudes Armeniennes, which since 1920 has been responsible for the publication of the most prominent journal devoted to Armenian studies in the West - Revue des Etudes Armeniennes (Paris: I-XI, 1920-1923; n.s. I, 1963- ) - has also recently initiated the editorship and publication of the Revue du Monde Armenien: Moderne et Contemporain (I, 1994- ). In a field of research dominated by Armenian language journals, it is extremely exciting to welcome the publication of the St Nersess Theological Review (1, 1996- ), which embodies and reflects the concern of the St Nersess Armenian Seminary in New York, founded in 1961 by the late Archbishop Tiran Nersoyan. This is the first forum in English for critical discussion of issues of central concern to 1 Reviews: Prof. D. M. Lang, BSOAS XL (1977), p. 218; H. Berberian, REA XI (1975-76), p. 460; Levon A Saryan, AR XXX, 4 (1977-78), pp. 129-130; and George Shirinian, ibid., pp. 431-433.

the Armenian Church and a resource through which its theological heritage can be brought to the fore and rendered accessible to the international theological community. Furthermore, skilfully compiled indexes for the foremost journals of Armenological interest have appeared in the last two decades. These bibliographies are in themselves comprehensive research guides for Armenologists on the history and society of Armenia in the widest sense. In 1968, to mark the centenary of the journal Ararat, the Holy See of EJmiacin published Seda Kocinyan's Matenagitut'yun Ararat Amsagri (,Bibliography of Ararat Monthly', 1868-1919, St EJmiacin, 1970). As a supplementary volume, an analytical index of texts of all genres (history, colophons, minor chronicles, lives of saints, fables, inscriptions, letters, theological texts, canon law) published between 1868-1919 in the journal Ararat was compiled by Karine Avetyan. 2 In January 1974, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the monthly Ejmiacin, the Holy See of EJmiacin commissioned Seda Kocinyan to compile the Matenagitut'yun Ejmiacin Amsagri (,Bibliography of EJ miacin Monthly', 1944-1973, St EJmiacin, 1975). The last and equally significant bibliographical tool to appear is Handes Amsoreayi Yoduacneru 100 Taruan Matenagitakan C'uc'ak 1887-1986 ('Handes Amsorya Bibliography 18871986'), compiled by P. O. Sek'ulian (Vienna, 1990). It is my hope that this Bibliography, covering roughly the period ca. 1896 to 1995, together with my previous two contributions - Catalogue of Early Armenian Books, 1512-1850 (London: The British Library, 1980) which describes two important collections of early Armenian books and maps (those of the British Library and the Bodlean Library, Oxford,)3 and Armenia (World Bibliographical Series, vol. 163, Oxford: Clio Press, 1993)4 - will provide the beginner, the mature student and the academic equally with reference works which are of central importance, and at the same time give a representative overview of what has been researched and accomplished in the field of Armenian studies. The subject arrangement of the Bibliography is a difficult decision and remains partly a matter of preference. I have followed the conventional division of subfields in which Armenian studies have largely proceeded up till now. One may of course argue with various aspects of it, such as the periodisation of the History section, the need to further split up the sections into subfields specific to economy, military, political history and 2 Ararat Handesi Bnagrakan Hratarakut'yunneri Matenagitut'yun ('Bibliography of textS published in the journal Ararat, 1868-1919'), compiled by K. Avetyan (Erevan, 1989). 3 Reviews: Edward Gulbekian, jRAS 2 (1981), pp. 213-214; H. Kevorkian, REA XV (1981), pp. 508-510; D. M. Lang, BSOASXLIV (1981), pp. 592-593. 4 Reviews: Ara Sanjian, AR 45,41180 (1992), pp. 94-97; ].-P. Mahe, REA XXIV (1993), pp. 321-323; C. ]. Walker, jRAS 5 (1995), pp. 122-124; George Shirinian, jSAS 6 (1992-93), pp. 248-255.

so on. This would, however, have led to other problems of classification. I hope the Table of Contents is sufficiently specific for the user to locate the subject of hL choice and interest, especially if used together with the Author Index. The Benlian Trust (London) and the Zoryan Institute for Contemporary Armenian Research and Documentation (Cambridge, Mass.) gave grants to convert the data into machine-readable format. Additional assistance to the publication was received from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation's Department of Armenian Affairs. I am grateful to them for their valuable support. I would like to offer special appreciation to my colleagues in the British Library's Systems Development section, and in particular Mr Chris Wootton, for their technical help. I also wish to express my deep and heartfelt appreciation to the Directors of Curzon Press for generously offering to include the title in their Caucasus World series.
