ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

great big thank you to the crew at Sounds True—especially to Tami Simon and Alice Feinstein for their inspiration and support, and to Nancy Smith for her clear ear and technical expertise. I would like to thank the many people who contributed their stories: Christine Evans, Padma

O’Gara, Jenny Britton, Leela, Steve

Hennessy, Karuna King, John Taylor, Cheryl, and Sheila, and the many others whose stories there was no room for. I deeply appreciate your honesty and openness. And a very special thank you to my old friend and deeply caring acupuncturist James MacRitchie.

I also thank my husband, Ed Shapiro, for his unbelievable patience, generosity, and enduring love. His contribution to this book is incalculable.

AFTERWORD

_ f you have now read through this book, you may well be feeling that _ it seems like an awful lot of work to try to find out what your body is ~ saying, and why not just go to the doctor and get some pills? And you would be fully justified to feel like this. The journey of getting to know yourself and your body can be an arduous one. It can appear as if nothing is changing no matter how much personal work you do, and at times it can seem pointless, especially if the illness or difficulty you are working with does not improve. I know this, as I have traveled this journey for many years. And I have heard it over and over from other people. But I also know that this journey is the most important one you could ever make. You will get to know yourself in a new and intimate way. It will lead you into previously unknown places and into wonderful adventures. It will give you a sense of connectedness and will deepen your insight into human nature. It will fill you with compassion for both yourself and for others. It will show you how we are all a part of each other.

AFTERWORD

333

I wish you good luck. May you travel on this journey with equal measures of both courage and laughter. May you be free from suffering. Bon voyage!
