Introduction What is Windows 10?

Windows 10 is a “tick” in Microsoft’s periodic release plan. With each passing year, Windows is being incrementally improved, tweaked, redesigned and modernized. Each new iteration of the OS is much more capable than the last. Windows 10, the most recent OS, is supposed to be the final iteration of what was formerly known as Windows 8. Like previous iterations of the OS, it offers access to a bevy of Microsoft’s digital services and can be updated to be compatible with the latest hardware. The operating system is available as a free download, with a digital license valid for the lifetime of the hardware. The new version is said to provide an easier migration from older versions of the OS and be more friendly to multi-platform (hybrid) devices. Since this is a massive new OS, you’re not allowed to install it on existing hardware. Some machines have hardware compatibility limitations or have a discrete chip that prevents their installation, though Microsoft has created tools to help out those who are having trouble. Windows 10 does not replace Windows 7 or Windows 8. The two-decade-old versions of the OS will remain supported and maintained through to 2023 and 2025 respectively.

What are the benefits of Windows 10?

While there are always some benefits to each new OS release, Windows 10 was announced to be more streamlined and unified. Microsoft touted the OS’s enhanced security and improvements to the user interface. Windows 10 offers users new features to either use or ignore. Among the improvements are: the ability to mute your PC with the Cortana voice assistant, the ability to toggle the close button in apps, and much more. Another major advantage to Windows 10 is its PC upgrade program. The program allows users to upgrade to Windows 10 for free for a limited time. In Microsoft’s words, it’s a “return of the free upgrade.”

How do I download Windows 10?

It is possible to upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 7 or Windows 8, though the process is a bit different. You can’t use the usual method of removing the old OS and installing the new one. You need to set up a new device and use a Windows 10 USB drive to install it. The new Windows 10 OS is located in the My Computer section of your boot drive. If you do not have a USB drive, you can download it from Microsoft’s website. Once downloaded, you’ll need to install the USB drive on the Windows 10 machine you wish to upgrade. When you unplug the USB drive from your PC, you will see a warning that the device is no longer recognized. However, you’ll be prompted to allow the USB device to work with your PC. You can click the “Enable” button to give your Windows 10 USB drive the ability to communicate with your computer. Once the process is complete, you will be prompted to give your PC administrative rights and the ability to install software updates.

Is my PC ready to upgrade?

The Windows 10 upgrade has not been fully rolled out yet, though Microsoft has stated it will be available on April 11. The rollout will begin in phases, with some users getting the update first and others later. The sooner you can upgrade, the better, as your PC will not be able to run Windows 10 after the update process is complete. Windows 10 is rolling out to 500 million devices and is currently available for the PC, tablets, and smartphone.

When will Windows 10 come to my Mac?

After announcing Windows 10 for Mac in November, Microsoft said that it would release the OS later in 2015. That has now come and gone, and the OS is nowhere to be seen. In fact, you cannot even download the Windows 10 Desktop for Mac program. Instead, there is the Windows 10 Mobile update, which includes a few changes. The operating system includes an updated Start menu, Settings app, notification center, and more. Windows 10 for Mac would likely be much different than the mobile OS, as it would have to be compatible with the Mac ecosystem and functions similar to Apple’s operating system. While Apple has not outright said that Windows 10 for Mac will not be released, this leaves many users wondering when they will be able to make the switch. Is there a way to skip the upgrade and stick with Windows 7 or Windows 8? While it might be tempting to choose the lesser of two evils and stay with Windows 7 or Windows 8, there are many reasons to consider upgrading to Windows 10. For example, Windows 10 is available on the Xbox One, Surface 2, and Surface Pro 3, meaning that if you already have an Xbox One and Surface Pro 3, you can potentially use those devices as the basis for a nearly seamless transition to Windows 10. Microsoft also announced that Windows 10 would support the Xbox One and the Xbox One Elite Controller. The Verge reports that the Xbox One Elite controller will be available in October 2015 for $299.95. It’s important to note that Microsoft will not give you the option to

downgrade to Windows 10, even if you decide to stay with Windows 7 or Windows 8. Instead, you’ll need to upgrade or you’ll be forced to buy a new computer.

Why can't I get Windows 10 via Windows Update?

Some users have had issues installing the Windows 10 upgrade. For example, users in Europe reportedly experienced technical difficulties with the upgrade, and Microsoft is now recommending that users backup their files. According to a Microsoft spokesperson, "Over the past several months, we've seen some customers who attempted to upgrade to the Windows 10 update experience some difficulty with the deployment and prompted them to install the standalone installation media, which is intended for non-commercial use, and we have heard their feedback. As a result, we will issue a Windows 10 upgrade media free of charge for eligible users who downloaded the Windows 10 standalone installation media, and we will update the file as necessary."

When will Windows 10 be available in my country?

Depending on where you live, you should be able to update to Windows 10 sometime in the coming weeks. If you live in the United States, you’ll have the best chance to get the operating system the first time Microsoft makes it available. In other parts of the world, the rollout may be delayed. The company says it plans to release the OS in "90 new countries" at the end of June. For those who prefer a monthly delivery of the OS, Microsoft says it will update its Windows Update service for users.

What languages will Windows 10 support?

The company says that Windows 10 will run on computers with or without screens, and on devices with or without displays, screen sizes ranging from 4.1 to 99.9 inches. It will also run on "average-sized" laptops, tablets, smartphones and desktops. Windows 10 will support eight new languages, including Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Spanish. In addition, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Portuguese will have more languages added to the OS in the future.

My computer already has Windows 8.1. Why can't I just switch to Windows 10?

Microsoft says that anyone who already has Windows 8.1 on their computer will be able to upgrade to Windows 10. It’s a nice perk, but there are a few downsides. For example, users who already paid for Windows 8.1 won’t receive a free upgrade to Windows 10.

I like Windows 7 but want to upgrade to Windows 10. What’s the catch?

Microsoft explains that, because Windows 7 is a long-term supported operating system (which means that it’s been in use for a few years now), it includes more stability and reliability than Windows 10. Therefore, the company says it will make a “small modification to the servicing model for Windows 7 to reflect the slightly older operating system, in order to provide a more consistent experience.”

Does that mean I'll get a free Windows 7 PC?

To be clear, you’re not getting anything for free. You have to pay for Windows 10. To pay for Windows 10, you can sign up for a one-year subscription to Windows 10 Home. The company also offers a Windows 10 Home Plus subscription, which costs $119.99 (including the one-year subscription) or $199.99 (including the one-year subscription and the Windows 10 Pro upgrade) for a three-year period. If you want to upgrade a current Windows 7 PC to Windows 10, you can do it for free. But that means you’ll have to shell out for Windows 7, Windows 8.1 and the Windows 10 upgrade media. And you don’t get a free Windows 7 desktop computer to keep if you upgrade.

How much will it cost to upgrade my PC to Windows 10?

According to Microsoft, it’s free for those who purchase a new PC. Those who have Windows 7, Windows 8.1 or Windows 8, and who purchase a new PC will receive Windows 10 at no additional cost. That includes any Mac, Android or Windows-based phone, tablet, laptop or PC.

Chapter 1 Installation of Windows OS

How to install Windows 10?

You’ll need to be signed in with a Microsoft account if you don’t already have one. Then head to this Microsoft store page and click the green ‘Buy now’ button. Windows 10 will then download and be installed on your device in one click.

How do I upgrade my PC to Windows 10?

After downloading the Windows 10 Technical Preview then setting up your PC, you can install the free Windows 10 public beta by launching the Windows Update service and selecting the PC that is about to be updated.

How do I learn more about Windows 10?

Microsoft released a Windows 10 landing page which goes into a bit more detail, but you’ll find more detailed information in the Windows 10 release documentation.

Do I need a Microsoft account to run Windows 10?

While Microsoft said that they’re not requiring you to have an account to download the Windows 10 Technical Preview and to use its apps, they do ask that you sign up for a Microsoft account. Click here for more information about this.

Can I connect my PC to my TV or monitor and use the Windows 10 features?

Yes you can. The beta makes use of HDMI so will function properly in all modern TV’s. In fact, since you’re viewing the PC as though it’s a big monitor, you can even adjust the size of the window you’re viewing.

Do I need to have a Kinect 2 to use the Windows 10 voice assistant?

No. Although you’ll be able to use your voice to interact with Cortana (and Cortana will respond using your voice) the voice assistant itself will only be available on devices that are Kinect-enabled.

How long is the Windows 10 Technical Preview for?

Microsoft says that the Windows 10 Technical Preview “is a first step in getting our developers on board to create apps and experiences for Windows 10”.

Will there be a Windows 10 Technical Preview 2?

No. Microsoft is calling the Windows 10 Technical Preview 1 the “Windows developer preview” and while this will go out to developers, only them and the Windows Insider beta testers will be running it.

If I’ve got a PC that is running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 and I want to upgrade, will I be able to?

Yes. Although there are a couple of caveats. Some Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 devices may not support Windows 10 if they’re not currently updated to Windows 10 Creator’s Update. Also, you’ll need to upgrade from the original version of Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, which is usually offered as a free update. If you’re an early adopter, you can also upgrade to Windows 10 for free.

What does Microsoft offer in the Windows 10 free upgrade deal?

Initially Microsoft has offered users a free upgrade to the Windows 10 Technical Preview. This offer expires on the 29th July 2015 at midnight and Microsoft say that they’ll be making a free upgrade available for the final version of Windows 10 after that.

What can I use the Windows 10 Technical Preview to do?

Aside from running it as a “Windows as a PC” screen, it’s possible that you’ll be able to install the Windows 10 Technical Preview on a test device and use it to test out the next version of Windows (the Windows 10 release). You’ll also be able to download any apps that you need for it and you’ll be able to send feedback through the Windows Feedback app.

What if I’m not a Windows Insider?

If you’re not signed up to the Windows Insider program, then you’ll have to wait until you have an upgrade to Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 to get access to the Windows 10 Technical Preview.

Which operating system is Windows 10 for?

For the time being, Microsoft is saying that Windows 10 will work on any computer with a CPU that’s between 1 and 2GHz, and a RAM of 2GB or more. More technical details will be revealed at the Professional Developers Conference in September, but for now it’s looking like you’ll be able to run it on a range of laptops, desktops and tablets, all of which have compatible Intel chips.

What’s the Windows 10 Home pricing?

The Windows 10 Home pricing is $14.99 and while the boxed Windows 10 Home is being made available to developers, the Windows 10 Technical Preview is only available as a downloadable application from the Windows Store.

What is the difference between the new-style apps, Universal apps and the old-style apps?

It’s really down to the feature set of each app. Most of the new-style apps have a more “Metro”-style interface. Universal apps, which are the default experience for Windows 10, look the same on all devices running Windows 10. Old-style apps (which run on Windows 8.1) will also be available, but the menus will be different.

Can I choose which type of app I use?

Yes. Microsoft has said that it will not be forcing you to choose one type of app over another, and you can move between apps (and also between editions of Windows 10) at any time.

Can I choose which apps I use in Windows 10?

Yes. The full set of Windows 10 apps that are available from the Windows Store is described as the “full package” and you’ll be able to choose to use any of them (although these apps don’t have much in the way of updates for Windows 10, and Microsoft won’t be working to ensure that the apps are always optimised for Windows 10).

What is the Windows Store?

The Windows Store is Microsoft’s app store, the place where you can download any apps that you want to use in Windows 10. It doesn’t just include apps though – it also includes Windows Phone apps. You’ll also be able to download the Edge browser and Cortana, Microsoft’s new digital assistant, which also integrates with other Windows 10 features.

What is a Universal App?

A Universal app is one that can run on a Windows 10 PC, a tablet or a phone. Some existing desktop applications might also be Universal apps, but Microsoft won’t guarantee that your favourite desktop apps will work on Windows 10, just that they’re eligible for an update.

Why can’t I use Windows Phone apps in Windows 10?

Microsoft has said that it isn’t possible. However, Microsoft are promising that third-party developers will be able to make universal apps that are also available to download from the Windows Store, and that some Microsoft applications will also be Universal Apps, which means they’ll be available to download on Windows 10 and the iPhone and Android devices that run on Windows Phone 8.1 and Windows Phone 8.1. For example, some of the more advanced features in Windows 8.1 such as the scrollbar might not be available in the Windows 10 Technical Preview, but Microsoft says that third-party developers will be able to create universal apps that allow them to work like they do on Windows Phone 8.1, and those Universal apps will also be available to download from the Windows Store.

What about a single app experience?

While you won’t be able to use the Windows Store on every device, you will be able to run the same Universal apps on your phone, tablet, and PC. Microsoft says that you will be able to use apps the same way on a Surface 3 as you would a smartphone, but the full Windows Store will be available on other devices too. If you’ve downloaded the apps you want to run on your PC and smartphone, and want to have them open side by side, you’ll be able to.

How can I download Windows 10?

Microsoft will be letting you install the Windows 10 Technical Preview using its own built-in Update Assistant, which will also be available from the Windows 10 download site when the Technical Preview goes live. If you’re running a later version of Windows, then you’ll need to use an alternative system update method. This will be confirmed as soon as Microsoft starts allowing installation of the Preview.

What is the minimum hardware I need to run Windows 10?

Here are the minimum requirements for Windows 10: 1GHz processor (e.g. Intel Celeron, AMD Athlon, etc.) 1GB of RAM 1GB of free hard drive space (you can use the ‘File Sharing’ feature to supplement the 1GB of free space on your drive, to help you install any apps you’ve downloaded) Windows 7 or 8.1, or Windows 10 desktop – if you’re running Windows 7 you’ll need a hard drive with 7, 8, or 10GB free of space. For more information about the minimum hardware requirements, see Microsoft’s documentation.

How to uninstall Windows 10?

It's straightforward: go to the Control Panel, right-click "Windows 10" in the Start menu, then select "Uninstall a program". Then, press the "Uninstall this program" button. There's an official guide to help you perform the removal as it is a System Restore operation.

Download the Windows 10 Redstone 4 Start Menu Recovery image

To help you install Windows 10 as quickly as possible, we have also provided an ISO image for you to try first. You can now use the Windows 10 Redstone 4 Start Menu Recovery image to download and try Windows 10 Redstone 4 with. It's quick and easy to use. Once installed, you will be able to install Windows 10 again if you have to downgrade from Redstone 4.

What happens when a Redstone 4 ISO fails to boot?

We're aware that some customers have been unable to boot their Windows 10 installation on a device using the ISO recovery image provided. We are aware that there are some issues with the Windows 10 ISO image recovery on compatible NVIDIA graphics cards. The Windows 10 ISO Recovery image (currently version 1.0.0.14604) is designed to support Windows 10 ISO images for Intel processors with Nvidia graphics, but not Windows 10 Image Recovery on NVIDIA graphics cards. As such, the Windows 10 Image Recovery image does not work correctly on nonNVIDIA hardware, and will not give you an official bootloader on NVIDIA graphics. If you have a USB 3.0 capable graphics card, we advise that you do not try to recover from a Windows 10 non-Image Recovery installation. We're working hard to fix this issue, and will provide more information soon. We recommend that anyone with a non-Image Recovery installation on their system should stay patient and wait for us to update the image as soon as we can.

Windows 10 automatically displays all system tray icons in a taskbar along the bottom of your screen. As soon as you log into your PC, Windows 10 takes you to the Start menu, and from there it'll show you what program you're currently running and in which desktop category it is running in. You can click the taskbar at the bottom of the screen to expand the taskbar. If you don't want this to take over your whole screen, just click the Settings button and change your screen to whichever you like. Once you have configured your notification area, and you don't want any notifications interfering with your taskbar, you can click the Settings button and change the notification area in Windows 10 to display whatever you want. The drop down menu will allow you to customize how many notifications will appear on the screen.

Do I have to have all the icons shown at the top of my taskbar to know what's running?

No. You can keep the small icon of three lines by your notification area, as long as you decide how many notifications you want on the screen.

Does Windows 10 notify me when tasks run in the background?

Yes. However, you can override this notification with a system tray icon in the notification area.

How do I customize my notification area?

If you don't want to have it completely customizable, you can have it with the default settings. Windows 10 comes with these defaults, so it's up to you to change them. To modify the size of your notifications, you can click the three lines icon in the bottom left corner. Then, go to Settings, and click System, and go to Notification Settings, and click on "Show more." You can always switch between different notification styles by clicking the three lines icon again and choosing another style. For instance, I usually have my system tray look like this:

Customize what shows up on your screen

You can set it up on your PC as a local or a cloud-based one. If you set it up as a local password, you will need to enter it when you log into your PC. If you set it up as a cloud-based password, it will be automatically synced across your Windows PCs. Here are some examples of what they look like: Local password: When you log into the PC, it will prompt you to set a password. Enter your desired password, and then you will be asked to confirm it. Chapter 3 Notification Center

What is the notification center for Windows 10?

Ever since Windows 8, Microsoft has been in something of a hurry to ensure that Windows is increasingly accessible to the masses. The software giant felt the need to include a number of visual tricks to appeal to the masses, many of which aimed to remove the need to open and save the power button. The notification center was one of the most notable tools that Microsoft introduced to take the fear out of new system functionality. But that also made accessing the notification center pretty cumbersome. Pressing a function key with any urgency would lead to an image of the various buttons on the key being presented in a large, single, and visually obtrusive screen. I complained about it on several occasions before Windows 10 arrived, and at the time, the notification center was relegated to the very deepest level of the Settings menu, making access to it fairly unwieldy. Unfortunately, Microsoft never added the functionality we had expected. It only made it accessible when a person chose the Settings option for the OS. Thankfully, however, there are some practical workarounds that can reduce the number of people that have to use the notification center as an input method.

How to disable the notification center

Thankfully, there are two practical workarounds to help people keep the notification center off their desktop, and hopefully, everyone will find one that suits them. The first, and most obvious, is to simply use an arrow button to highlight the Settings menu, and then press either Ctrl-Shift-Esc (that's Shift-Alt-Shift-Esc, in other words), or simply press the power button. This makes the keypad act as a virtual keyboard, and typing with that key will return the setting to its default setting, whether that be off or on. When you want to display the power button again, press Ctrl-Shift-L or CtrlShift-M. The second workaround is one I haven't found in a while, and perhaps this is because I have been using a USB keyboard with a number pad. Use the Windows Key or the Enter key to activate a numeric keypad, press Enter, and then press the Start button. The Windows key or Start button is an on/off toggle, and by pressing them both at the same time, it turns the notification center off. If you're planning to switch to a different keyboard, then you might want to turn it back on first. Be sure to enable this feature if you're concerned that people will miss it. Of course, that only works if you have a USB keyboard with a number pad, and if you don't, you can skip to the next section.

How to access the Windows key menu on a Bluetooth keyboard

The above options don't work with Bluetooth keyboards. They still read the Windows key even when they're not connected to a computer. And many people, it turns out, have disabled that option for other reasons. Fortunately, there are two quick and easy workarounds. You can turn the Windows key into a regular button by pressing the Windows key and then the space bar. Of course, you will now have to press Windows first, but it's much more accessible, especially for people who are new to Windows. And you can also make the Windows key appear on a computer keyboard so that people who are using Windows without a keyboard can also get to the power button. All you need to do is download and install Logitech's Unifying Receiver for Windows. Open the software and connect your keyboard. Click on the Settings icon and then the Device drop-down menu. Then, click on Bluetooth. Select the profile you want to install, click on Start, and it will take you to a web page that will automatically download the relevant drivers for your keyboard. Click on the Update Now button to download and install the drivers. It's that simple, and you don't need to restart your computer or open the program. You may find that this causes some behavior changes, so it's worth checking what is being changed before you download and install the drivers.

One of the benefits of using a wireless keyboard is that it will still work if your computer isn't online. One of the disadvantages of a wireless keyboard is that it's harder to use a numeric keypad to access your computer. However, the one that I used today is a mechanical keyboard, and because it has a regular numeric keypad, I can use the Windows key to go back and forth between the power menu and my numeric keypad.

Chapter 4 Customize Windows 10

How to customize Windows 10?

When Windows 10 was first released, Microsoft also made a change to the touch-screen gestures, making them more fluid and intuitive, if a little hidden. The following short video shows a few of the gestures that you may have noticed in the last couple of months. One of the most requested features of Windows 10 has been to allow users to have more customizability. The Start menu is fine for a desktop, but for a tablet or laptop, it's pretty lackluster. And while Windows 10 does have a flexible Start menu, it is missing some of the control buttons you may be used to. Microsoft has recently updated the OS with a new experience called 'Windows 10 Redstone' that allows users to customize the Start menu, and more importantly, the Action Center. But how do you get started with customizing your Windows 10 experience? If you want to get straight into the nitty gritty, then follow along.

Step 1

Log on to your Windows 10 PC Click Start, then click the cog icon in the lower right of the Start menu, and then click Settings Click the gear icon in the lower right of the Settings menu, and then click Updates Click Customize button to begin the Windows 10 customization process

Step 2: Edit the desktop

Before you start tinkering with any new features, you will probably want to add new shortcuts and settings to your desktop. Click the Edit button in the upper right corner of the screen, and then click Set up default programs Scroll to the bottom of the new window that appears, and select Manage Default Programs and then click Advanced options Scroll to the bottom of the window that appears, and select Users and groups Select the group for which you want to add a new user Click Apply button to finish

Step 3: Drag and drop

You'll also want to customize your Taskbar, so head to the taskbar section, and choose Window & taskbar from the drop down menu Click File tab to the left of the following list, and then click Actions & options Scroll down to the 'Drag and drop actions' section, and then click Edit Click the pencil icon to the right of 'Drag and drop actions' to the right of the line that says 'Drag and drop actions - toggle Drag and drop actions will not interfere with my (or other users') taskbar customizations' Click the switch icon to the right of 'Drag and drop actions will not interfere with my (or other users') taskbar customizations' Click the switch icon to the right of 'Drag and drop actions will not interfere with my (or other users') taskbar customizations' to turn the 'Toggle dragging' setting on or off Click OK to save the changes

Step 4: Customize the Start menu

In order to set your Start menu as your primary option, you will need to add a second taskbar shortcut to have both as the Start menu, because you can't have both in the same spot. To add a second taskbar shortcut click the icon in the lower left, then click View in the menu bar, and then select add a new button. If you get stuck at the screen where you can't select the 'Add button' box, then just click the 'Win+Tab' shortcut on the taskbar, and then use the Win+Tab shortcut in the Taskbar preferences to bring up the shortcut setting for the Start menu

Step 5: Customize the Action Center

The Action Center is a bit hidden, so you will need to open it to start the customization process, and to make changes. You can edit the sidebar, as well as the information it displays, but there are plenty of other tweaks to be made. In order to customize the Action Center, click the icon on the upper right of the screen, and then click Settings. Click the 'Show advanced settings' link in the right of the screen that appears, and then select the Action Center option. Now you should be able to change the order of the navigation bar buttons, remove the progress bar (not all users want to see the spinning red circle), and create new Taskbar items. To change the order of the navigation bar buttons, click the triangle icon in the upper right of the screen, then click Options in the menu that appears Click the switch icon to the right of the 'Navigation bar buttons' line to enable the 'Sidebar buttons' setting. Next, click the switch icon to the right of the 'Interactivity' line to enable the 'Navigation bar buttons' setting. Click OK to save the changes

Step 6: Customize the Start menu

There are plenty of other tweaks to be made to the Start menu, and here are a few of the highlights that you can make. To change the order of the navigation bar buttons, click the triangle icon in the upper right of the screen, and then click Options in the menu that appears Click the switch icon to the right of the 'Navigation bar buttons' line to enable the 'Sidebar buttons' setting. Next, click the switch icon to the right of the 'Interactivity' line to enable the 'Navigation bar buttons' setting. Click OK to save the changes

Step 7: Toggle Taskbar scrollbars

In order to reduce the amount of scrolling you have to do on your Start menu, and on your Taskbar, you can turn off the scrollbars, or toggle them on and off. To toggle the scrollbars, click the icon on the left side of the taskbar, and then select the taskbar area you want to disable scrollbars for.

Step 8: Toggle Taskbar shadow

You can also increase the ability of your Start menu to act as a taskbar overlay by disabling the Taskbar shadow, as well as the Taskbar flip action. To disable the Taskbar shadow, click the icon on the right side of the taskbar, and then click on the 'Taskbar shadow' drop down menu. Next, select the Taskbar shadow settings that appears, and then click the toggle button in the upper right of the dropdown menu. You can also change the Taskbar flip action. Click the icon on the right side of the taskbar, and then select the Taskbar flip action. Next, select the Taskbar flip action that appears, and then click the toggle button in the upper right of the dropdown menu.

Step 9: Make the Action Center all about files

By default, the Action Center only displays links to Control Panel items, but it's not the only way you can show off file-related information. Click the icon on the right side of the taskbar, and then click on the Settings link that appears. You should see the Action Center Settings option, which is a drop down menu with four options in it. The first option is 'File links'. Click this to make the Action Center all about files, and not just links to Control Panel items. Here you can customize the Action Center so that when you click a link in the Action Center, it's displayed as a large image in a corner of your Windows 7 Desktop. If you want to add more options, click the second option, 'Other options'. Next, click the third option 'Show details in favorites' to have your default Favorites folder show as a link in the Action Center. To access your Favorites folder click on the '+' button in the top right of your Taskbar. Then click the folder that you wish to have listed in the Action Center. Finally, click the fourth option, 'Sort by name', to sort the links displayed in the Action Center by name, and not just date. You can also make the Action Center default folder 'Online'. This will make the Action Center full of links to web sites, but will only display those links you have visited or bookmarked. If you want to change this, click the 'Edit Folders and Search' link at the bottom of the dialog box and then click the 'Show file/folder search results on the Start Menu' box. To access the 'Search' box, click the Start button, then click the 'Search' button in the left top corner of your Taskbar. Next, click 'All programs' in the left top corner of the search box to sort the search results by name.

Step 10: Set the Action Center to behave as a tile bar

You can also change the Action Center so that it behaves as a tile bar. To do so, click the icon on the right side of your taskbar, and then click the 'Set tile bar button'. You will then be brought to the tile bar option, which has four options. The first option is 'Tile width'. Choose the value that you want to use for the Action Center. Click the 'Apply' button in the upper right of the tile bar option, and then click 'OK'. The next option is 'Tile height'. You can set the height of the tiles in the Action Center. The tile height is determined by the height of your Taskbar, so the tile height can be very small, like 10px, or quite large, like 500px. The last two options are 'Tile icons' and 'Background color'. When you click the 'Set tile icons and background color' link, you will be brought to the tile icon box where you can choose the icons for the Action Center that will appear in the Taskbar. To get the Action Center to display the right way around your Taskbar, you can set the 'Windows behavior' settings. If you don't have this window open, go to the 'settings' page, click the 'start' button and then click 'program behavior' and click 'look and feel'. Then click on the option 'Place the Action Center in the taskbar' and then click 'Apply'. When you click 'OK' you will be brought back to the program behavior page, where you can click 'OK' again to return to the program behavior page.

Step 11: Check how many Action Center notifications you have

You can actually see how many notifications you have displayed in the Action Center by double clicking the icon on the right of the Taskbar, then clicking the 'Widget count' link under 'Action Center'. You will then be brought to the page that shows you which notifications have been displayed in the Action Center. If you click on the notification, you will be brought to the page where you can choose to hide that notification or close it. You can also select 'Block', 'Snooze' or 'Remove all notifications'. Clicking on the notification will highlight it and make it go away permanently.

Step 12: Close all notifications in the Action Center

The other way to quickly close all of the notifications in the Action Center is to click the three vertical dots at the top left of the Action Center. Click the 'X' button, which will close all the notifications in the Action Center.

Step 13: Add widgets to the Action Center

The Action Center is available in a lot of Windows applications. You can also place widgets there by creating them with the 'Widgets in notification area' feature. To add a widget to the Action Center, click on the widget icon on the right of the Action Center, and then click 'Add'. Select the widget you want to add, then click the 'Add' button. You can choose between two different design styles for the widget, as well as a maximum size, and a maximum number of widgets that can be shown in the widget area. Once you have chosen your widget, click 'OK'. You will be brought back to the widget page. You can either close the 'Add Widgets' window, or click 'OK' and 'Apply'. You can also click 'OK' and 'Apply' to close the 'Widget settings window'.

Step 14: Set a default notification

If you have the default notification behavior enabled, you can also set a default notification. To do this, click the 'Change default notification behavior' link under the Action Center settings page, which will open the 'changed notification behavior' page. You will be brought to the page where you can click the 'Change default notification behavior' link to change the default notification settings. You can choose whether you want the default notification to be: ● A visual notification. ● A text notification. ● A file icon notification.

You can also choose to have your notification be: ● ● ● ● ●

A preview notification. A sound notification. A text notification. A file icon notification. A file icon notification.

You can also set a default activity notifier, which you will be brought to if you have installed one. Click the 'Change default notification behavior' link under the Action Center settings page, which will open the 'changed notification behavior' page. You will be brought to the page where you can click the 'Change default notification behavior' link to change the default notification behavior.

Step 15: Change the size of the Action Center

The size of the Action Center can also be changed from the 'Action Center size' page under Settings. Click on the toggle switch to the right of the Action Center size to change the size, and then select the size you want from the drop-down menu. Like Windows 10, Windows 8.1 has the ability to configure how notifications appear, by opening the notification center and viewing the notifications, which can be done with the 'Open Notification Center' button. There is also an 'Action Center notification' page that you can view, which can be launched with the 'Open Notification Center' button.

Step 16: Edit the Action Center in Settings

To access the Action Center in Settings, click the 'Settings' button on the taskbar, and then select the 'Settings' icon that appears on the far left.

Step 17: Click on Show advanced settings

Click on the gear icon at the top right of the Settings window, and then click on the 'Show advanced settings' option.

Step 18: Make it a button

Make the Action Center a button by clicking on the 'Set button' button that appears on the far left of the Settings window.

Step 19: View a list of your installed notification settings

To view a list of installed notification settings for all apps, right-click the notification settings panel and select 'View settings' from the drop-down menu.

Chapter 5 Browsers

What is Microsoft Edge for Windows 10?

From a pure user perspective, Microsoft Edge isn’t very interesting. It has the same basic look and feel as Internet Explorer did years ago. The interface looks slightly tweaked, but from a purely superficial level it looks very similar. In fact, Windows 10 now uses the same font as IE did, it’s called Garamond and looks quite similar, but the browser itself is fundamentally the same as IE, so it has all the same issues. It has the same kind of cross-compatibility issues that IE had years ago. As Microsoft has invested a lot of time and resources into improving its user interface, many of these issues with IE are still present in Edge, so the operating system feels a little cluttered and more in need of an aesthetic refresh than it does new features or improvements. Another issue is that Edge still has to compete with Chrome on many levels, and Chrome is widely regarded as the best browser on the market by a long shot. So Edge needs to be a big improvement, which it is, but if it’s competing against Chrome for market share it’s going to have some problems. For Windows 10’s purposes, though, Edge has a lot going for it. It’s much faster and more stable than Internet Explorer, but perhaps the most important improvements are coming in the future.

What’s in the Edge for Windows 10 Preview?

Last week Microsoft rolled out an early preview of the next version of Edge, the Windows 10 update due later this year. It’s called Windows 10, and in case you haven’t heard, it’s a big update. At first blush it seems rather light on new features, but that’s because Microsoft is primarily focused on improving the browser for users who are stuck using Windows 7 or Windows 8. The preview browser includes a new feature called Action Center. Instead of opening a new browser window when you need to visit a website, you can open a new window and then click an icon from the Action Center to open a website directly. For example, if you visit a website that you regularly visit, then you can open the website directly in the new Edge window and then close the Edge window without having to go back to a new tab or open a new window. With this new version of the Edge, you can still access your browser history, and thus your favorite websites, from another window. It’s nice, because it still allows you to retain the familiar settings and accessibility options you might have in your browser. However, it does give you more of a streamlined experience if you’re using Edge on Windows 10. Edge still supports reading the entire web page without a lot of scrolling, even if you click an icon on the desktop that opens a new window. If you open a new window in Edge, it opens in a new tab without needing to scroll through web pages. This new version of the Edge browser also introduces tab preview bars, which allow you to see the content of an active tab before you close the tab. You can even set which type of text you want to see previewed, like bold, italic, or a combination of those. There are a lot of changes coming in the Windows 10 update, and it’s definitely worth checking out Microsoft’s Edge for Windows 10 preview to see what features are available.

What’s New in Opera

In a way, Opera is taking the same approach as Edge and IE, while taking a radically different approach. The idea is to take the best features from the other browsers, like speed and speed and accessibility, and then provide a dramatically improved user experience for those who use Opera. One of the most important features in Opera’s upcoming release is called Speed Dial. It’s basically just a unique browser folder, with different options for the different pages you visit. It gives you the same sort of one-click capability that you get in Safari and Chrome. Another feature called Discover is a “home screen of the Internet” with multiple options for your favorite websites, or categories of websites based on content. For example, if you search for “Twitter” you’ll see a list of Twitter sites. The Discover feature will also allow you to view multiple tabs, which you can switch between using a button in the lower left corner of your browser window. Another feature called Intelligent Speed Dial uses your connection to automatically detect the speed you’re browsing at and allows you to easily adjust the website loading speed. Another feature called Tab Mix Plus allows you to combine several tabs on the same page, which can make it easier to click through the entire page, or combine tabs in order to access multiple sites at once. Tab Mix Plus can even separate tabs by different content types, and then drag and drop pages to move them around. It can be difficult to move multiple links from one tab to another when the tabs are all next to each other. Tab Mix Plus is also a very useful feature for international customers, as they’ll be able to jump between English, Spanish, Chinese, and other languages. Other new features in Opera include a new “Social” toolbar, which allows you to connect to social media accounts and get the latest updates. It’s a nice addition for those who might not want to leave the browser for a bit to check

their Twitter feed or Facebook. It also includes a feature that remembers where you’ve been on any given page.

What’s New in Vivaldi

With a name like Vivaldi, you can bet it’s going to pack quite a punch. And, by golly, it’s got a pretty cool new feature to boot. The new feature is called QuickRemote, and it allows you to remotely access certain websites, and even control them from a browser window. It will even allow you to access a webpage directly from another tab and have it behave exactly like it would in the browser window. Another cool feature that will be coming in the future is called “Tab Groups,” which allows you to group together several websites so that you don’t have to switch between them. It basically works by suggesting that you group together the websites that you visit most often, and then you’ll just have to click on those suggested groups to open the website in a new tab.

What’s New in Konqueror

Konqueror has been around since the 1990s, and it’s consistently been one of the most popular web browsers. The new version is called Konqueror 5, and it features a number of small but important features that add up to a big overall improvement. You can now see a thumbnail of the page you’re viewing when you hover over it in the address bar. If you hover over the tab you’re on, it shows you a preview of the webpage. You can now easily save and share web pages by clicking a button in the upper left corner of the web page. You can also add tags to web pages to make it easier to find them later. You can now copy URL links directly into your clipboard by clicking the “Copy link” button in the URL box.

What’s New in Dolphin

Another multi-platform web browser that is well-known for its customization is Dolphin. And, for the New Year, the developers of Dolphin are rolling out an awesome new feature. It’s called SplitView and it will allow you to quickly move around web pages and do other activities on your device in the same tab. Place a finger on the corner of the display and drag it to another display in the same physical location. A menu will open and will include a button for “Create a SplitView,” which will allow you to create two separate tabs. You’ll be able to move the tabs around, and you can even use your fingers to select the tabs you want to be displayed in SplitView.

Chapter 6 Windows Updates and Devices

How to add devices to Windows 10?

Click on Devices in Settings or just hit Windows key + X. Choose the devices you want to use and click the right-most buttons to connect them.

How to use Device Hub?

Windows 10 can help you discover new connected devices and keep track of all of your devices. With Device Hub, you can connect the devices on your PC to the cloud, find devices in the event that your PC isn’t connected to the Internet or if you are upgrading a machine to Windows 10, and manage your PC remotely. Device Hub can be found on your PC in Settings or just hit Windows key + X. Double-click the Microsoft Devices icon in your system tray to open Device Hub. Select Device to begin discovery. Click the All Devices button to discover all connected devices and click All Devices to add them. When you click on an item, the details of the device are displayed. 1. How to Find a Previous Windows Installed from Windows 8 or Windows 7? You may need to copy a previous Windows install file or even just a shell file to a USB drive before you can install Windows 10. You can create a complete Windows 8.1 or Windows 7 install by following the instructions in this article, but it may not work if you use the Download All NTFS Files to Copy step. 2. How to Update Windows on a Windows Phone or Surface Phone? Windows Phone or Surface Phone require at least 50% battery power to update the operating system from a Windows 10 installation. A battery status check tool is available for Windows Phone and Windows 10. You can use this tool to see if you have enough battery power to upgrade. You can also use this tool to see if there are any critical updates or issues that are blocking you from updating your device. If there is, download the update and install it from your phone. You can use the latest version of the Microsoft Update for Windows Phone app to check for updates. You can also use this tool to see what updates you need to install on your phone. Unfortunately, Windows 10 requires that all of your installed apps be compatible with it, even for updates. Check your phone manufacturer’s app store for software updates. Some manufacturers also provide updates through their Windows Update programs. 3. How to Read Upgrade Notice with Microsoft Update? If you receive an upgrade notification from Microsoft, select an option to accept it or to decline it. After the upgrade is installed, you’ll see an update

information page that includes a short description of what is being updated. On the Microsoft Update site, you can also read a full Windows 10 upgrade and repair notice and learn more about what updates are available. Microsoft Update lets you see and update a wide variety of updates to Windows 10. To receive Windows 10 updates automatically, visit the Windows Update link in the Windows 10 control panel. Click “Check for updates” and wait for Microsoft to automatically download and install the updates. However, Windows 8/8.1 doesn’t come with an easy-to-use system spot to let you know when your PC has to upgrade to Windows 10. You can download Microsoft System Spot from the link above. It’s a utility that gives you details about how Windows 10 will change your PC for the better. The System Spot app gives you all the latest information you need to know to prepare your PC for the next version of Windows. Note that Microsoft System Spot only works for a portable device that has Windows 8.1 installed. Windows 10 does not include a portable spot, so the System Spot app won’t provide you with any information about updating your PC to Windows 10. 5. How to Change Your Computer's Boot Screen? Microsoft doesn’t provide a method to change the boot screen from Windows 8 to Windows 10. However, you can download and install a Windows 8.1

When you install System Cleaner, it installs a temporary boot file called boot.new. You can use the boot.new file to boot Windows 10 onto your PC if you decide to do so. However, you’ll need to create a different boot.new file for each computer that you want to change to Windows 10. 6. How to Manage “Early Update” Windows 10 Updates? Windows 10 only supports two updates at a time: “Fast” and “Current.” Fast updates are available to PCs running Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1 while Current updates are only available for PCs running Windows 8 or Windows 8.1. You must choose one of these update types to make your PC ready to receive “Early Update” Windows 10 updates. At the time of this writing, there is no way to select both types of updates at the same time. If you want to make sure your PC receives both types of updates, you can use Windows Update, and click the Check Now or Update Now button. On a PC that is not “Ready to receive Early Update,” Windows Update will check for “Fast” updates and will display an “Active Update Waiting” message if one is available. 7. How to Manage Windows 10 Updates at a Local Level? You can control the updates from Microsoft and download and install them at your own pace by installing Windows Update Local Previews from the Windows 10 control panel. With Local Previews, you can download and install updates from Microsoft at your convenience. However, these updates are not considered stable and can have various issues, and they can’t be upgraded to the final version.

8. How to Enable “Known issues” and “Beta” for Windows 10? You can configure which updates are marked as “Known issues” and which are marked as “Beta” for Windows 10. You can make sure that updates you apply receive a guarantee from Microsoft that they won’t experience any problems. However, a more sophisticated one is now available, which was introduced with the Anniversary Update of Windows 10.

This logo makes it possible to display a variety of information. For example, you can display the latest information about updates for Windows 10, such as when Windows 10 received a “critical” update, an update that affects the general stability of the operating system. You can set a custom display to show how many uninstalled updates are remaining for Windows 10. You can also choose to show the current installed operating system. In the event that Windows 10 needs to perform an upgrade, the default is to select “Get more updates.” This option changes to “Upgrade now” when Windows 10 receives an update that is critical, such as one that may break the computer. Windows 10 can also show other statistics, such as the number of people who are currently using the operating system and whether there are devices in the past or future that have been retired. 11. How to Uninstall Updates from Windows 10? When you update your Windows 10 PC to the latest version of Windows 10, you also update the operating system itself. Click System and Security. 3. Click Windows Update. 4. Click Uninstall Updates. 5. Click Uninstall, and then click Yes when prompted about whether you want to keep your apps. 6. Click Close. 7. Click Ok. 8. Close the System Update Panel. 9. In the Search box, type “Windows Update” and then click results. 10. Install Software

There are two ways to install software on Windows XP: 1. Install software on your PC. 2. Download software on your PC. Note: There are also a number of commercial Windows software vendors who make their software available online. The software is downloaded and installed to your PC when you click to install. The only difference is that the vendor downloads the software to your PC. First, download software. Here are a few examples: You can download many software packages on the Internet, including software for Windows and OS X, PDF readers, multimedia players, email clients, and web browsers. You will have to create an account on the software vendor’s website. If the software has a free version, you can upgrade to the paid version. Downloading software through your PC may not be the best option, however. In some cases, it will be easier to install the software by downloading it to your computer from the Internet. Microsoft Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, etc. will download automatically if you upgrade from a version of Office that was purchased before 2013, or if you log into the Outlook Web App. The latest version of Word, for example, is available for free on many sites, including some hosted by Microsoft itself. The free versions of many other Microsoft Office applications are also available, including Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. You can use these applications for free or as a trial. To get a full-featured version of these applications, you can purchase them

through the Microsoft Store. If you can’t find the version you need on a free site, you can contact the vendor. Typically, they will provide a trial version for a limited time. For example, some allow a trial period of a week, while others are as long as two months. If you don’t want to keep the trial period, you can purchase a version of the application. Paid software is a little different. You can pay to have the application downloaded to your computer, but you usually have to create an account to do so. Once you have purchased a piece of software, you can use it as it was purchased. For example, you can purchase an app like Photoshop on the Internet, but use it on your computer. In other words, you can’t download a trial version and keep it on your computer. The software vendor may not sell you the trial version directly, but they will usually offer it on their own website. In many cases, the trial version has a different name than the main version, such as Windows’ “Adobe Photoshop CS5 & CS6.” Microsoft Office downloads through the Microsoft Store will work the same way as the ones downloaded from the Internet, or from other software vendors. When you upgrade from a version of Office that was purchased before 2013, the installer will automatically download the latest version to your computer. Tip: If you download Microsoft Office directly from the Microsoft Store, be sure to “restart” your computer after the installation. This will clear any preferences the software asks you to set.

Third Party Software

Microsoft Office is only part of the equation. You also need some additional software to make Office work for you. These are often hosted by third-party software vendors, and you can find them using the search tool in your Internet browser. The website offers downloads in multiple formats, including zip files. Each file can be opened by a PC, tablet, or smartphone. Some of these software providers may be better for certain situations, such as someone who works with Office documents on a mobile phone. For example, many will install software on an iPhone and run it using a specialized App. Downloading these third-party software programs is the same as installing them on a PC. Your PC has to have a functioning operating system, and it may need additional drivers to function properly. For example, if you download a PDF app from the Internet, your iPhone’s built-in browser may have problems displaying it. Note: If you need help, check the publisher’s website. Often, you can download these software programs by simply visiting their site.

Chapter 8 Cortana

What is Cortana for Windows 10?

Cortana is Microsoft's answer to Apple's Siri, Google's Assistant and Amazon's Alexa. Unlike those competitors, which are directly aimed at consumers, Cortana is integrated into the Windows 10 operating system so that users can use it for tasks like setting reminders, looking up information and ordering a takeaway pizza without touching a keyboard. However, Cortana can also be used to interact with third-party apps. Here are a few ways to use Cortana.

How to access Cortana

Before diving into the ways to use Cortana, you'll want to familiarize yourself with how to access the assistant. First, click the Cortana search box in the Cortana menu or click the search icon on the taskbar or the Windows Start menu. Next, type what you want to ask Cortana in the search box and press enter. For example, I typed: "Send an email to Tatiana Russnais," which opens the mail app on my iPhone. Type in the person's name, followed by the subject of the email and then hit send. Next, click the SEND button and Cortana will ask if you want to edit the message. Click YES. Once the message has been sent, click the PASTE button.

Where does Cortana live?

Cortana is available to users in 17 countries including US, Canada, Australia and the UK. Microsoft has also released a redesigned Windows Store app for Windows Phone 8.1, that works similarly to Windows 10, to make it easier for users to interact with Cortana. You can find it in the Microsoft Store.

What does Cortana do?

If you're not familiar with the platform, Cortana might be the only thing standing between you and that midnight craving for pizza. Here's what Cortana is capable of doing: ● ● ● ● ● ●

Create reminders Assign a task to a calendar Create alerts about traffic, flight delays, etc. Play music Check the weather Show sports scores

Cortana can do a lot more, but those are the basic capabilities I've used so far. For more information, see my "Cortana FAQ" below.

How to use Cortana for tasks

If you already know how to use Cortana, you'll probably have to do a lot less button pushing to get things done. Here are a few ways to use Cortana to complete common tasks: Say the magic words: "Hey, Cortana." Say "Hey, Cortana" in the same tone and volume that you would say "Hey, Siri." For example, you would say, "Hey, Cortana, play music on Spotify." Say what you want to do: Say something like, "Send an email to [name] with my reminder." In order for Cortana to understand you and your intent, you'll have to provide a name and a specific task that you want Cortana to complete. Use voice commands: Cortana can hear you over background noise and voice control is turned off by default in Windows 10 so you'll have to turn it on. The easiest way to do this is to press Win+H. Change the context of a task: If you want to open the Mail app on your iPhone but don't want to use the Mail app, then open the Mail app then say something like, "Open [Mail app name]." This will open the Mail app instead of Cortana, but you'll have to say what app you want to use. Use a voice command to take a screenshot: Cortana has a built-in screenshot command that works just like the Windows Photo Gallery. In order to take a screenshot, say, "Take a screenshot."

Tips for using Cortana

In general, Cortana tends to be a little less accurate than your average smart assistant. Here's why: Cortana was built as a helper app for Windows 10. As such, she's been pre-loaded with Microsoft's built-in services including Office 365 and OneDrive. If you use Apple's built-in services such as iCloud, your results might not be as personalized as they should be. The workaround is to click the search box to bring up the Bing search app. Click the magnifying glass icon and type "plus" followed by the name of the app you want Cortana to use as the default assistant. For example, say, "Bing Maps." That's it. Once you do this, you can then ask Cortana about the weather, emails, news and whatever else you typically use Siri for. If you have an iOS device, you can also ask Siri for reminders via Siri on the lock screen. Siri will read the reminder to Cortana, which is then displayed in the Cortana app. Remember: Cortana relies on a web service, which is run by Microsoft. This means you have to be connected to the internet to use Cortana. Outlook: To access the Calendar app, just click the magnifying glass icon and then click the Calendar icon. In the list of apps, type "calendar." You can also enable Cortana integration for your Outlook calendar by following these steps: From the Cortana button in the taskbar, click the down arrow icon and click Settings. In the settings pane, click Calendar. In the left-hand menu, click Cortana Integration and enable it. To access the Calendar app, just click the magnifying glass icon and then click the Calendar icon. In the list of apps, type "calendar." You can also enable Cortana integration for your Outlook calendar by following these

You can also enable Cortana integration for your Outlook calendar by following these steps: From the Cortana button in the taskbar, click the down arrow icon and click Settings. In the settings pane, click Calendar. In the left-hand menu, click Cortana Integration and enable it. To access the Mail app, just click the magnifying glass icon and then click the Mail icon. You can also enable Cortana integration for your Outlook calendar by following these steps: From the Cortana button in the taskbar, click the down arrow icon and click Settings. In the settings pane, click Calendar. In the left-hand menu, click Cortana Integration and enable it. OneDrive: To access OneDrive, click the magnifying glass icon and then click OneDrive in the list of apps. In the list of apps, type "onedrive" followed by the name of your account. It's possible to access a variety of voice assistants on Android devices, including Google Assistant, Alexa and Siri. You can check your phone's settings and enable whatever assistant you want. You can also set a "Do Not Disturb" feature to silence all of your apps at once, which can be helpful if you don't want your phone to bother you while you're trying to do other things. Head to your phone's settings and tap the Notifications tab. Under "Do Not Disturb," you can set a day and time to silence notifications. Or you can make a "Do Not Disturb While Driving" option so that your phone won't vibrate while you're driving. Search: Ask Cortana anything. Here are some examples: "Show me all pictures of an Irish pub," or "What time is it in Hong Kong?" Ask Cortana anything. Here are some examples: "Show me all pictures of an Irish pub," or "What time is it in Hong Kong?" Calendar: Cortana can remind you of things in your calendar. Just say "Remind me to buy tickets for the 'Rock on The Range' festival next month" or "Remind me to buy flowers to

plant in the front garden on Sunday." Cortana can remind you of things in your calendar. Just say "Remind me to buy tickets for the 'Rock on The Range' festival next month" or "Remind me to buy flowers to plant in the front garden on Sunday." Home: Try saying, "Okay, Cortana. Turn on the coffee machine." Note that Cortana can't do everything Alexa or Google Assistant can do. That's because Alexa can use Amazon's large library of skills and Google Assistant has a lot of built-in functionality. Microsoft says that Cortana is still in its early stages, and the company is working to make it even smarter. Cortana is also a competitor with Apple's Siri and Google's Assistant. And, according to a recent study, Cortana has an edge over Siri and Google Assistant. More than 50% of people surveyed said they were more likely to use Cortana than Google Assistant.

Chapter 9 Windows Hello

What is Windows Hello for Windows 10?

Windows Hello is Microsoft's take on biometric authentication. Think of it as the tech equivalent of Touch ID, a fingerprint sensor that can unlock your computer and authorize transactions. It all started in the Windows Vista operating system, when Microsoft embedded it's TrueLogin feature (which uses biometric data like a thumbprint to secure user accounts) into the OS's built-in login screen. Once your PC recognizes you using your biometrics, you can log into Windows with a thumbprint, iris, facial recognition, or by typing in a PIN. The latter method was introduced in Windows 8 and is still available for Windows 10 users.

No More Password Confirmation dialogs

When you need to enter a password to sign into Windows, the operating system will prompt you with a dialog box that can show you six possible passwords, which you can pick from. These boxes also give you the option to select a safe password with numbers, upper and lower case letters, and special characters. With Windows Hello, however, you won't see any of these dialogs. When you want to login to Windows, you simply hold your device up in front of your face to scan it and the system recognizes you. If you scan your fingerprint, Windows Hello will automatically recognize you the next time you try to log into Windows. If you do nothing, Windows won't even prompt you for a password.

What Are the Privacy Concerns with Windows Hello?

From a security perspective, Windows Hello is incredibly convenient, which is why it's being adopted by enterprises, financial institutions, and large companies around the world. When you sign into a Windows 10 PC, Windows Hello uses your face, voice, or fingerprint to verify who you are and unlock the computer. Of course, there are some downsides. For example, you can't simply walk up to your PC and use it. Instead, you'll need to type in a PIN and scan your face or fingerprint in front of your PC's camera. (Because of this, you can't use Windows Hello if someone else tries to get into your computer. A PC could unlock with your fingerprint, but that's about it.) But the biggest privacy concern around Windows Hello isn't with the biometric sensors. It's with how Windows 10 handles your biometric data. For starters, when you use Windows Hello on a Windows 10 PC, Microsoft stores the images of the three faces and one fingerprint that are associated with your account in the Windows Hello Services database. You'll need to manually update this data whenever you move from one PC to another. Microsoft also tracks how many times you use Windows Hello, the exact times and dates you login, and when your PC is locked and unlocked. But again, you don't have to worry about this data unless you want to— Microsoft clearly states that it will anonymize and only use this information to improve its technology.

How to Sign Up for Windows Hello

Signing up for Windows Hello is simple. Open the Settings app and head to "Accounts & Websites." From here, you can sign into Windows with a PIN or with your face. Some things to keep in mind: Microsoft does allow you to use a PIN on a Windows 10 PC when you're using an external biometric sensor. However, this won't work with Windows Hello. Also, if you're using an external sensor, the system won't unlock when you scan your fingerprint. This is especially helpful if you don't have your fingerprint reader or scanner plugged in. To register your fingerprint with Microsoft, go to Settings > Accounts & Websites and click "Add a Device." Next, you'll need to scan your fingerprint. For the best experience, the sensor should be placed at about 5 to 10 inches away from your palm. For optimal security, however, you'll want to scan your fingerprint or face near the sensor. Once the sensor is set up, you'll be able to use it with Windows Hello on any Windows 10 PC.

Basic Windows Hello security tips

If you already have a Windows 10 PC with an external sensor, you can configure it to automatically log you into Windows Hello whenever you unlock your PC with your finger or face. To do this, open the Settings app and click "Advanced" > "Face & Fingerprint." From here, you can change the settings for any sensor on the system. You'll also be able to create a login PIN or change the sensor location. Also, Windows Hello works with Windows Hello FIDO2, which uses both NFC and Bluetooth to authenticate your identity. Simply open the settings app and navigate to "Accounts & Websites." Click "Windows Hello" to configure it with a compatible USB key or NFC sensor. And if you have a Windows Hello-capable Surface Pro 4, make sure you enable the FIDO2 protocol. Click the settings icon in the taskbar and select "Advanced." Next, click "Bluetooth & other" and select "Allow Microsoft to scan for this device." Click "OK" and FIDO2 will be enabled for you. Windows Hello also works with Windows Hello Smart Lock. You can set up a Smart Lock account if you don't already have one. Sign into the Microsoft store and sign into the Smart Lock section. Click "Add a device" and choose a USB key or an NFC sensor. Click "Confirm" to finish the setup.

Better security through a combination of biometrics

If Windows Hello isn't secure enough for you, or if you don't have a compatible USB key or NFC sensor, you can get better security with a hardware authentication module (HAM)—otherwise known as a Fingerprint Sensor. If you go this route, you'll need to ensure that you place your finger on the scanner in a specific place—either your palm or your pointer finger. Then, it's simply a matter of waiting for it to authenticate you (it's all about biometrics). However, there is a chance that a user could fool the Windows Helloequipped scanner—unless, of course, he has the right technology to capture and analyze the pattern of your finger. For this reason, keep in mind that, while Windows Hello is the most secure option, it isn't foolproof.

More of PCWorld's biometric security coverage:

Windows 10 does have biometric login capabilities, however, and Microsoft has included them in several of its apps. To unlock the Microsoft Health app, for instance, you'll need to put your finger on the touchscreen—this is the same experience you'll get when you log into the Microsoft store with a fingerprint or facial recognition. When you have a hardware authentication module, you'll also be able to log into other apps, like your email, the new Windows Mail app, and the OneNote app. For more information on how to securely log into Windows Hello apps, see the "Windows Hello for Developers" PDF.

How to set up Windows Hello with Bluetooth devices

All you need is a compatible Bluetooth device and a Windows 10 PC with a fingerprint scanner or facial recognition. First, open the Settings app and click "Advanced" > "Bluetooth & other." From here, you can choose a Bluetooth device and set up a local connection to the device. This option is essential for Windows Hello-equipped hardware that uses NFC or Bluetooth. With a compatible USB key or NFC sensor, you can setup a single sign-on session for logging into any Windows 10 PC. Click the "Sync Devices" button at the bottom of the page and select "Change sign in state." With a Windows Hello-compatible USB key or NFC sensor, you can get a single sign-on session for logging into any Windows 10 PC. Click the "Sync Devices" button at the bottom of the page and select "Change sign in state." After you've connected the right device, you can skip the next step and go straight to enabling a local connection for Windows Hello, instead of going through the Bluetooth pairing process again.

How to use Windows Hello in a Windows 10 PC

Windows Hello is supported by Windows 10, the new operating system Microsoft released in July 2015. With Windows Hello, you can log in to your Windows 10 PC with just a fingerprint, your face, your iris, or your key fob (but not a USB key or NFC sensor). Here's how it works: Follow the onscreen prompts to set up Windows Hello and to sign in with your finger, face, iris, or key fob. When Windows Hello takes your registered biometrics, it will send the request to Microsoft. The company's servers will confirm that it is you, and then it will make you enter your password. You'll see a blue LED light above your Hello-enabled Windows 10 PC—this indicates that Windows Hello is successfully logging you in. When this happens, you can close the Hello window. Before you continue, however, you should note that, in order to make sure your Hello hardware works with Windows Hello, be sure you are using a Bluetooth connection or a USB key or NFC sensor. Also, make sure that the Bluetooth connection is not paired with a PC or other device that is already enrolled in Windows Hello. If you're using an older computer, for example, an open Bluetooth connection with a device that has been logged in to Windows Hello will interfere with Hello's functionality. Notice, too, that the unlock light turns red while Windows Hello is in "Classic Mode," meaning it can't unlock the computer. This happens whenever you try to log in with a finger or a face or iris. To remedy this, you can press Windows + X. In this window, click "Set up in a different mode," and enter a different passcode. If you're signing in with a fingerprint sensor, make sure you have a compatible application installed. In a future column, we'll show you how to find out which apps will support Windows Hello.

Windows Hello in a Windows 10 Mobile device

Windows Hello is not available for mobile devices; you can't authenticate with your phone's built-in fingerprint scanner or facial recognition. But Windows Hello does work with a fingerprint scanner or facial recognition hardware. To set up Windows Hello in your Windows 10 Mobile device, follow these steps: Open Settings and sign in with your Microsoft Account. If you haven't already, tap on your name and then sign in to the "People, Calendar & Mail" app. Tap on Accounts and Passwords and then sign in to Windows Hello. In the next step, you will need to set up your fingerprint or facial recognition. During this step, you can set up your fingerprint scanner or facial recognition hardware. Tap "Secure my device." In the next step, you'll have to set up your fingerprint or facial recognition. Note that you can't use your fingerprint scanner or facial recognition on a phone that has already been enrolled with Windows Hello. In this step, however, you can enroll in a new device.

Disable Windows Hello when you're not using it

When you aren't logging into your PC, Windows Hello is in its Classic mode. If you try to unlock a PC with your finger, for example, you will be prompted to enter your password. You can turn this mode off by tapping on the Lock icon in the Action Center and choosing Disabled on a device that is not currently enrolled in Windows Hello. Then, confirm your decision by tapping OK.

Verify your fingerprints or facial recognition using a Windows Hello smartphone app

Fingerprint scanning and facial recognition can be used to log into Windows Hello PCs and mobile devices, but you can use either type of authentication to sign into Windows 10 Mobile. This can be done from a supported smartphone app such as Passport, a Windows Hello companion app, which is available for iOS and Android.

It has a consistent, soft pastel color palette embellished with subtle patterns. Moving the Start menu and the Taskbar to the center of the screen is both simpler and easier on the eyes. If you like, you may position them to the left. Apps built for Android will be accessible in the new Microsoft Store and also via the Amazon Appstore and will be available for immediate download. As long as you have a Samsung Galaxy phone, you will not have any problems using Android apps on Windows 10. Additional steps have been made to integrate mobile and laptop devices. When using Windows 11, you can work with multiple virtual desktops, which enables you to create and move between virtual desktops faster. A Windows 11 feature is similar to the Mac in that it enables you to easily move between multiple different desktops, with each one set up specifically for a certain kind of task. This includes personal, work, school, and gaming.

With Windows 10, it was much more complicated to set up and use. Organizing many windows and apps will be easier with Snap Layouts and Snap Groups. The new OS has features called Snap Groups and Snap Layouts. When one of these apps is selected, all of them are started automatically. It is possible to rapidly locate open windows by disconnecting a monitor and putting it back in. With Windows 11, every team has received a new design, and now they're all a part of the taskbar, making it easier to locate them. Teams will be available to users on all of these operating systems: Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS. In Windows 10, you may have widgets open directly from the Taskbar, and you can customize the Taskbar to display whatever information you'd like. Microsoft's primary objectives have been to make the tablet touchscreen more suitable for touch, which includes increasing the gap between program icons on the taskbar and adding new gestures. Haptic feedback lets you feel and hear the pen motions you make while you write or draw on your computer. Once the OS is in place, people will be able to enter commands via voice as well as using the touchscreen. Game consoles will feature a variety of technologies that include Auto HDR and DirectStorage to enhance the PC gaming experience. This is only the next move in Microsoft's PC/Xbox integration plan. The newly implemented features and enhancements in Windows 11 make it clear that it is not a clone of Windows 10. Starting with a completely new interface, Windows 11 begins with a UI that was built with simplicity and usefulness in mind. Simplifying and streamlining as many elements of the UI as possible has given rise to a minimalist, straightforward environment that facilitates work and pleasure. The new interface attempts to keep you out of the way and help you

concentrate by being as inconspicuous as possible. The new "Snap Navigator" menu displays when you click the maximize button in an app window, helping you stay in your flow. This is a practical feature that enables you to allocate your applications to different grid setups in a fast and easy manner. The latest Microsoft program, Teams, is great for working together with colleagues and friends on projects. Most users will now start with the newly updated Start Menu and Taskbar. Grid of program icons that may be adjusted has taken the role of tile-based information and layout. Changes have been made to how pinned and running apps display, as well as animations when moving the mouse and clicking around. These changes may now be seen in the Taskbar. System tray and Action Center each have two separate sets of menu options now. As of late, the names "Quick Actions" and "Quick Settings" have been unified to be known as "Quick Settings" and are placed on the far right side of the Taskbar, near the system icons. When connecting to Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, you have the choice to proceed. Additional features you may select include adjusting the nightlight setting, changing the focus mode, and so on. You will have to click on the date and time to view your calendar.

Team Chat built into Windows 11.

Not only was the lock screen redesigned, but also the File Explorer interface has been changed, as well as a few new features such as Dark Mode. For Windows XP Home edition users, widgets will provide functionality such as the To-Do, Calendar, Photos, and information from MSN. Windows 11 is more open and inclusive than any prior versions of Windows, including Windows 10 and earlier versions. Windows Spotlight, which shows off new Windows 10 Insider Builds, is included in the upcoming Windows 11 release. Windows 11 has introduced many new capabilities, many of which are intended to aid touch-enabled devices. Microsoft is once again giving attention to making Windows more enjoyable to use, and this time it is with Windows 11. Windows 11 will feature new gestures and capabilities intended to make the operating system seem fluid on tablets. To provide a sense of how an application window may feel when it is resized, the hitboxes (areas that receive touch) around application windows have been enlarged. The new touch-based operating system has been equipped with extra tiny animations to make it seem as though it is running more fluidly and naturally. The previous limit of two-finger movements for Task View is been increased to three or four. Also included in the features of this new keyboard is support for GIF pictures in the emoji panel, and it also has SwiftKey-style theming support. Additionally, users using pen and touch devices now can quickly access all of their programs inside the Pen and Touch Workspace's fast start bar. You may now configure double-tapping, tapping, and holding on to your Surface Pen. Integrating any program or feature of your choosing into

Windows is a possibility by picking this option.

Windows 11 has a new Microsoft Store

In a press release, Microsoft announced that it has created a new app store for Windows 11. New features in the updated Microsoft Store app include new, up-to-date visuals for Windows 11, and this new design has been redesigned to complement the rest of Windows 11. Microsoft has said that it is preparing new guidelines to govern the kind of apps that are allowed in the store. Adobe's Creative Suite will be available in the new Microsoft Store. Microsoft has released a new version of the Microsoft Store, which now supports 32-bit Windows programs in the .exe or. MSI file type. Microsoft's revenue-sharing conditions may enable developers to implement their ecommerce platforms, their CDNs, and their CDNs. It's feasible to use the findings of this to put practically any Windows-compatible software in the Microsoft Store, so end consumers may find and use it. Microsoft said it is going to add popular applications like Teams, Office, and Visual Studio to the new Microsoft Store to demonstrate the seriousness of the Microsoft Store strategy. Microsoft is also hopeful that other third-party application developers, such as Mozilla and Adobe, would implement their applications in the Microsoft Store to offer customers more choices. Microsoft is adding TikTok compatibility to the new Windows Store for Windows 11.

Windows 11 is back to one major update a year

The company has confirmed that it plans to provide a single feature update per year for Windows 11. Microsoft made two major OS enhancements available to Windows 10 customers, however, problems often arose due to vulnerabilities in the OS. Microsoft will be able to better add new features and functionality to future versions by matching Windows 11 with the competition. The last time Windows received an update was in March 2015. Since this will be the Fall release of Windows 11, we may see a new feature upgrade soon.

Windows 11 will be a free upgrade

Anyone who has previously installed Windows 10 may get Windows 11 for free, which will be launched later this year. The statement Microsoft made says that there is no time limit on this, meaning that you may postpone updating to Windows 11 as much as you'd want. In the absence of an included Windows 11 license from the OEM, the OEMs have no other option than to pay for one. Using Windows 10 requires a license, however, individuals who have already upgraded to Windows 10 Enterprise or Windows 10 Pro from that license may remain using the product. This is how it happened while switching from Windows 7 to Windows 10. We also expect that, like Windows 10, Windows 11 will be available as a stand-alone product.

Is there a Windows 11 Insider Program?

Microsoft Insider users will be able to sign in and use preview versions of Windows 11 similarly. The wait for the Windows 11 for Insiders Preview should be brief. In my opinion, the company is preparing to roll out its first Windows 11 preview version as soon as next week. Microsoft Windows is meant to demonstrate the newest technological advances from across the world. It's proven essential for multibillion-dollar corporations as well as a way for smaller businesses to get started. Before the advent of the web, the Windows operating system launched the world wide web. Email, the first PC game, and computer programming all originated at MIT. Windows is the best way to find out about new ideas, interact with people, and realize goals. Designing for so many different people is not something we take lightly. During the past 18 months, we've gone from finding ways to make the PC work with our lives to trying to squeeze our whole lives into the PC. We did not just go about and perform chores with our devices; we met others, went to seminars, and did work together as well. What is maybe most essential is making relationships with others. We were taken aback when we discovered we could capture conversations in the corridor, workouts, happy hours, and vacations. When we saw a shift in the PC — from utilitarian and practical to personal and emotional — this was a major change. This encouraged us as we were developing the next edition of Windows. We've developed an atmosphere that is inspired by your experiences and emotions to assist you in finding a new home where you may create, play, learn, and connect. While this may seem like sobering news, it's also thrilling since it gets you closer to your interests.

Redesigned for productivity, creativity and ease

We've simplified the design and made it more accessible to help you work quicker and become more creative. Convenient, modern, contemporary, spotless, and stunning are the words that best describe this hotel. There was nothing accidental about it: everything was done on purpose to give the user power and to generate a sense of calm and ease. The Start button is positioned in the middle of the screen, and we simplified the process of locating what you need. Regardless of your location, device, or platform, start provides you fast access to your recent files in the cloud. For as long as it has existed, Windows has always tried to provide users the flexibility to perform their work in the manner that's most comfortable for them, while also enabling them to multitask using both snapped programs and full-screen applications side by side. New in Windows 11 is Snap Layouts, Snap Groups, and Desktops, which enable multitasking and help you keep on top of your priorities. To offer you the freedom to personalize your screen the way you want, we developed these additional features that help you keep track of your windows and improve your screen real estate. A separate desktop may be created for each of your life aspects, such as work, gaming, or education, and tailored to your desires. With Windows 11, you get a simpler interface that cuts through the complexities.

A faster way to connect to the people you care about

Relationships with the people you care about are an essential part of connecting with your hobbies. There has been an emergence of new internet connections in the last two years. To continue interacting with consumers even when they are far away, we know that they want more face-to-face contacts, but we want to make it as easy as possible for customers to stay linked to each other via online interactions. We prefer that consumers be not hampered by the devices or platforms they utilize. We are happy to announce that with Windows 11, we are offering Teams integration on the taskbar. When you've done that, you may use text, chat, audio, or video to instantly connect to all of your contacts on Windows, Android, or iOS. Even if your friend doesn't have the Teams app, you can still connect to them through two-way SMS. The new Teams app, which enables you to start presenting and muting instantly, makes connecting with friends and family a breeze with Windows 11.

Delivering the best PC gaming experiences yet

When you use Windows 11, you're signing up for a gaming experience. In the history of Windows, gaming has been an important component in all of the major releases. As the number of gamers across the world increases, more and more individuals have the opportunity to interact with loved ones and their social circles via video games. Windows 11 makes use of the system's hardware by using newer gaming technologies. This last addition to DirectX 12 will provide gamers an even better gaming experience. It provides better load times and increases the amount of information in-game environments while at the same time delivering immersive, realistic visuals. This camera has Automatic High Dynamic Spectrum (or Auto HDR) for a broader, more vivid range of colors, creating a more engaging visual experience. When you're running Windows 11, you may use your favorite PC gaming devices and accessories. With Xbox Game Pass, PC gamers will be able to play over 100 of the greatest PC games instantly, and it will still be easy to find other players to game with, regardless of whether they're on a PC or console.

A faster way to get the information you care about

Widgets bring you closer to the news and information you care about with a personalized feed powered by AI and an optimized browsing experience from Microsoft Edge and Windows 11. It is important to give ourselves a mental reset or take a minute to check in with the outside world no matter how concentrated and creative we are. In today's world, it is very common to check the news, the weather, and one's phone notifications while picking up a phone. Additionally, you may launch a similar-looking workspace directly from your desktop by opening a new tab. Similar to when you slide a glass over your screen, a piece of food will open up if you tilt it the right way. Widgets provide publishers and producers more real estate within Windows, making it possible for them to incorporate personalized content. We aim to help small businesses as well as emerging artists to flourish.

An all-new Microsoft Store where your favorite apps and entertainment come together

It's the new Microsoft Store, where you'll find a one-stop-shop for apps, games, music, and books, in addition to TV, games, music, and books. To make it more appealing, as well as to give it a faster feel, the new design has been done. Our focus is to make it easy to find new applications, games, programs, and movies by providing an ever-expanding array of resources that help you to find what you are looking for. It's great to have Microsoft Teams, Visual Studio, Adobe Creative Cloud, Zoom, and CanVA all in the Microsoft Store - delivering a fun and inspiring experience for both work and personal usage. In downloading software from the Store, you can rest assured knowing that the program has been audited for security and family safety. We're thrilled to tell you that Android apps will be coming to Windows devices for the first time. Android apps will be able to be found on the Microsoft Store, and people will be able to get them through the Amazon Appstore this year. Since Khan Academy Kids users have so frequently recorded videos for educational purposes, this new feature will save them a lot of time. We will be able to offer more information about this event in the coming months. Using Intel Bridge technology with Amazon and our cooperation will provide amazing results.

Creating a more open ecosystem unlocking new opportunity for developers and creators

By taking real steps to open the Microsoft Store to artists and developers, we will provide additional economic possibilities for them. To assist developers and independent software suppliers (ISVs) in increasing the number of users they have access to regardless of whether their applications are developed as a Windows application, a PWA, or a UWP, we've made it possible for developers and ISVs to make their applications accessible to more people (UWP). While we made changes to our revenue sharing model to support developers, we are pleased to make the following announcement: Now developers may list their store-bought goods in the Microsoft Store and keep all the money. Our 85% revenue-sharing retail model is still being used in many applications. We see it as mutually advantageous for both of us to provide our customers with open, secure access to the apps, games, movies, programs, and other content they want and need.

Faster, more secure and familiar for IT

Microsoft's Windows 11 is built on top of the familiar Windows 10 foundation. Just as you currently prepare, implement, and plan for Windows 10, you will also prepare, implement, and plan for Windows 11. Upgrading to Windows 11 is, in terms of performance, much the same as installing a Windows 10 update. If you plan to depend on your prior administration experiences like as Microsoft Endpoint Manager, cloud configuration, Windows Update for Business, and Autopilot, incorporating Windows 11 into your estate will rely on those management experiences. Like Windows 10, we care about app compatibility in Windows 11 as much as we did with Windows 10. In the App Assure service, we are providing a solution for customers with over 150 users that have issues with their applications. We ensure that your apps will work on Windows 11 without additional costs. Microsoft Windows 11 was created to make it safer, with many new security measures included in the operating system, which will protect customers from both the hardware and the cloud. Windows 11 is a secure, controlled operating system designed to protect data and provide access to many devices. We've worked closely with our OEM and semiconductor partners to create a new baseline of security in light of the ever-changing threat landscape and the emergence of the new hybrid workplace.

It’s a great time to buy a PC From the outset of Windows 11 development, we have worked with our hardware and semiconductor partners to provide seamless integration across the software and hardware components. The very first part of co-engineering is innovation, which happens when the silicon is formed. We are now sporting 5G, AI, and Arm support on silicon, thanks to AMD and the Ryzen CPUs, as well as Intel's 11th Gen and Evo Processors, and Qualcomm's deeplearning capabilities. We've tried to ensure that many different PCs are prepared for Windows 11. The new version of Windows 11 is faster and comes with improved features like touch, inking, and voice controls. We were able to enhance the touch experience on tablets while removing the need for keyboards, thereby increasing the distance between the icons on the taskbar and reducing the effort required to resize and move windows. As a result, we created large touch targets and subtle visual clues to assist with the task. Using haptics can help improve the overall satisfaction in using your pen, resulting in using your pen to be a more engaging and enjoyable experience. A few new voice typing capabilities have been added to the application, which include the use of dynamic predictive algorithms. What makes Windows 11 so great is that it automatically inserts punctuation and has voice commands as you talk. When you want to step away from typing, the option to speak your ideas is a great function. Beginning this Christmas, Windows 10 PCs will be able to download and install a free upgrade to Windows 11, and all new PCs will have Windows 11 installed. To find out if your current Windows 10 PC is eligible for the free upgrade to Windows 11, use the PC Health Check program, which is available via Windows.com. Windows 10 PCs bought today will be ready for the upcoming Windows 11 update. Every eligible Windows 10 PC will be updated to Windows 10 free of charge before the end of the Christmas season. The version of Windows 11 we will be releasing to the Windows Insider Program in the coming week is still under construction. The participation of this devoted community of Windows fans is very important to us, and their feedback is quite useful.

Here is an example of the way that the term “fabric” gets woven into the fabric of our everyday actions. Where we work, relax, spend time, and connect with others. Despite the passage of time, it has maintained its familiarity, and it has accommodated us through time. We're thrilled to be working on Windows 11, just like you. Since Microsoft announced Windows 11 at their huge press event on June 24, it is officially and unquestionably real. "This is the beginning of a new age for Windows," Nadella, who was there to commemorate the beginning of Windows in its new era, told the audience. Early builds of Windows 11 provide a glimpse of the redesigned look and functionality. As recently as June 2015, Microsoft claimed that there will only be one version of Windows for many years to come. Some additional features have also been included to encourage users to upgrade to a new number. It seems that the worry about the hardware and software requirements for Windows 11 has been assuaged, thanks to a software tool and a TPM chip. The introduction of widgets increased attention to gaming, and a refreshed look highlights some of the improvements in Windows 11.

Gaming on Windows 11 The Xbox app on Windows 10 is excessively sluggish and difficult to use and will be replaced with a dedicated gaming area in Windows 11. Game Pass for Windows 11 provides an improved and simplified method of buying, managing, and removing games, including titles like "Doom Eternal" and "Halo Infinite".

Compatible PCs will provide improved lighting and contrast for games and movies by using HDR (high dynamic range) and WCG (wide color gamut). It is also possible to use Direct Storage by using the other accessible functionality. You may quickly install game assets by downloading and installing the game.

Touch improvements

Since Windows 8, tablet mode has been one of Windows' weakest spots, and Microsoft's new tablet capabilities that it showcased for Windows 11 may be important to the operating system's success, particularly with the new Surface devices that Microsoft is working with. Microsoft held a press presentation at which it claimed larger touch targets and simpler methods to move windows around, and other such features, such as a better way to rotate windows. In terms of using gestures on the trackpad, some of those options will make their way to the touchscreen interface. Handwriting recognition will be added to Windows 11 using a stylus to give you a better feel for your drawing or sketching. In addition, the touch keyboard has been re-designed, and it includes a tiny keyboard for your thumb and emoji characters that are waiting to be input. Microsoft's Steve Guggenheimer adds that dictation will also become better, with voice commands, and new choices for "remove that" and more.

When is the Windows 11 release date? For the next Christmas season, Microsoft will be releasing Windows 11. Windows features updates follow a predictable release cycle comparable to that of software upgrades. New features are rolled out to the Windows Insider community, starting in the Dev channel, for six months to a year. People that are trendsetters want to test out new goods, give feedback, and improvements arise. After the production release, the Windows 10 feature update is now in the Beta stage. Something is left for service to make it accessible to the release preview channel before it is made available to everyone. Microsoft has decided to sit on the sidelines and refrain from letting customers use the new capabilities until they are completed. As a result, Windows RTMs have been released every June and December since then, as Microsoft's timetable matched up with Azure. When you have seen this pattern previously, you may feel unsettled. What would happen if Microsoft were able to meet their target of June 24, and deliver the product before their launch date? If you hadn't already guessed, Microsoft has done its best to keep you in the dark about Windows 10, too. Microsoft is dropping the Windows 11 shell for Windows 10 Insider Preview releases. It will not be possible to use the new Microsoft Store and Android applications for Windows before Windows Insider testing. On June 28th, we will release the preview for Windows Insiders. Starting this summer, OEMs will be able to get the right to place it on new laptops and desktops. Windows 11 will be released sometime between October and November. Even though the release date for Windows 11 has not yet been finalized, it is approaching rapidly.

But wasn’t Windows 10 the last version of Windows?

The final version of Windows 10 will be released when Windows 10 is unveiled. To have Windows on a service after which we move to Windows as a service was the concept behind that proposal. I think Terry Myerson knew that Windows 10 will be a major design shift and that he thought it would be Windows 10 that implements it. To be clear, one person identified as Jerry Nixon, who signed his name with the pseudonym Jerry Nixon, said that Windows 10 was the last version of Windows. Conclusive evidence was found since Microsoft did not address the problem. Microsoft of course felt that this was a conscious choice inside their organizational culture. The main issue, though, is that a large number of those who anticipated that Windows 10 would be the last Windows edition no longer work for the company. Panos Panay is now in charge of Windows and has made a name for himself as a showman. Conventionally, think of it as a makeover, but we're now working on a significant overhaul of the user experience. In reality, the fundamental workings of Windows 10 are precisely the same as Windows 10 has always been, and could have just been issued as an update to Windows 10. As part of the new brand, freshness is considered the biggest characteristic. This sense of excitement is created around it. This might have been avoided if only new PCs had had Windows 10X because it is the only kind of PC that could have had it installed. Microsoft had not planned to provide retail licenses of Windows 10X. Windows 11 will be installed on any PC, with no technical barriers in place. Free software updates will continue to be given, as a result of which Windows will remain in the service ecosystem. It will not be the last edition of Windows, though. I expect Windows 12 to be released before the end of the decade. We did consider the issue of how version numbers in Windows 11 would work. It now has a one-year cycle instead of a two-year period There is no longer a need to utilize H1 and H2. Microsoft did not respond to this.

Is Windows 10X dead?

It's also said that Microsoft is preparing to launch a new edition of Windows, dubbed Windows 10X. A full-scale revamp, including many underlying technological tweaks to the underlying infrastructure, including the use of container technologies. Microsoft features like Start Menu and Groove Music have been integrated into Windows 11 since Microsoft has announced that it is “dying.”

Windows 10X is, in fact, a dual-screen OS with which Microsoft unveiled the Surface Neo tablet. In the end, it decided to make the dual-screen idea available on low-cost single-screen devices. As Microsoft's Surface director Panos Panay states, he wants to be where customers are in the process of doing their daily tasks, even if it means purchasing a new PC. After that, everything fell apart. Emulators for Windows 10X had been made for Microsoft to release a big-screen version of Windows 10, however, Microsoft didn't produce a big-screen version of Windows 10. They were completely worthless when the single-screen build was made public. Microsoft is planning to release a version of Windows 10 with the components of Windows 10 in a smaller form factor, and this version will be known as Windows 10X.

Can my PC run Windows 11? Is it a free update?

Users of Windows 10 will be able to get Windows 11, free of charge, for Christmas. Sadly, Windows 11's system requirements are higher than those of Windows 10. Since 32-bit support has been terminated, and CPUs manufactured previous to this date will not be supported, 32-bit CPUs will not be supported. Your system needs at least 4GB of RAM and at least 64GB of free space on the hard disk. People often believe that the biggest barrier is using TPM 2.0. Here’s the list: Processor:

1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster with 2 or more cores on a compatible 64-bit processor or System on a Chip (SoC)

RAM:

4 gigabyte (GB)

Storage:

64 GB or larger storage device Note: See below under “More information on storage space to keep Windows 11 up-to-date” for more details.

System firmware:

UEFI, Secure Boot capable

TPM:

Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 2.0

Graphics card:

Compatible with DirectX 12 or later with WDDM 2.0 driver

Display:

High definition (720p) display that is greater than 9” diagonally, 8 bits per color channel

Internet connection and Microsoft

Windows 11 Home edition requires internet connectivity and a Microsoft account to complete device setup on first use. Switching a device out of Windows 11 Home in S

accounts:

mode also requires internet connectivity. Learn more about S mode here. For all Windows 11 editions, internet access is required to perform updates and to download and take advantage of some features. A Microsoft account is required for some features.

The CPU requirements were also updated. To make matters worse, Super Micro found that 7th generation and previous Intel CPUs and older AMD Ryzen processors are retired, and may not be needed for public use, according to the organization's findings.

Is Microsoft going to force me to upgrade to Windows 11?

In short, no, you will not be forced to upgrade to Windows 11 even if you don't want to. Starting with the Windows 10 version 1903, Microsoft reduced the effort to get customers to install feature updates. Windows 10's 1809 release was a catastrophic failure, which caused many users' data to be lost. The company's newest “seeker" approach is in use. The message only appears when you do a Windows Update check, and you have the option to decline the feature update. The feature upgrades that come with Windows 10 are only required if the current update is nearing the end of support, but even in that case, the next version is not advancing on Windows 11. You'll be able to download the latest version of Windows for free for anyone searching for it this Christmas season. This next Windows 10 update, called version 21H2, will be released in March of 2018, and you should steer clear of it." Microsoft ended by saying that version 21H2 would be supported for the next ten years, making it possible for customers to avoid the next version of Windows.

What’s new in Windows 11? Is this the Sun Valley update?

Recently, Sun Valley has started to be used to characterize the region. That is the codename for the Windows 11 UI update that will be a large-scale effort for users. As a whole, it's more than just a name for the operating system: it's the new user experience. The focus of the feature is to enable Windows 10 to succeed as a touch-friendly operating system, something that has been a struggle for Windows 8.1.

Android apps

The project Latte rumors were true. Microsoft's next operating system, Windows 11, will enable Android app compatibility. It is essential to know that Microsoft is working with Amazon to make the Amazon Appstore accessible on the Microsoft Store. That suggests that it will be possible to create a new Kindle app for Windows soon. You will be able to buy Android apps from other sources, such as the Android Market, but only if you use Amazon. In May of this year, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella made this remark when addressing at the company's Build developer conference: We want to be able to run all Android apps, including those that need Google services. There is no intention of accomplishing the objective of supporting all Android apps.

A big visual overhaul, with rounded corners

Windows 10 will be substantially different from the next edition of Windows, which is expected to be launched in the summer. Though it did not get a full new design as we typically see when a new version of Windows is launched, the current version of Windows 10 is built on Windows 8 and Windows 7's designs. Rounded edges will be part of the design. Since Windows 8, Microsoft has put a great deal of focus on sharp edges, and the square tiles that can be seen in Windows 10 may be linked to this, too. With the possible exception of older Windows operating systems, the next version of Windows, now codenamed Windows 11, will likely follow the example of more modern operating systems like iOS and Android. The Start Menu has undergone a complete makeover and is more focused and free-floating. It is much more or less the same as Windows 10X when it is not related to Windows 10X. The taskbar is positioned right in the middle as well. It also features brand-new, more eye-catching icons that make use of the operating system's improved aesthetic. You will find them, such as in the File Explorer, the Device Manager, and everywhere else. Do you have a question about the Windows 10 preview's accessibility? The look is new, but it is not the sole goal. There will be new ways to engage with the user interface, too. A primary goal of this release is to improve Windows 10's usability on touch devices. Even though Windows 8 was designed with touch in mind, it still seems to be adjusting away from touch on certain aspects of the interface in Windows 10. The operating system should match what you do when you push and hold something. Microsoft has revealed that the Precision touchpad-style movements would be included on the touch displays. You'll have more time by using motions you already know, like dancing.

Gaming improvements

It's accurate to say that Microsoft does well in the gaming sector. Beyond these characteristics, it provides a console-style experience, it has the only viable PC gaming platform, and it has the finest cloud service. Microsoft will take advantage of a new market opportunity if they recognize it. The new capabilities of Windows 11 with gaming are fantastic. An advanced HDR capability that was first introduced in Xbox One X and is now available on Windows is known as Auto HDR. Since High Dynamic Range (HDR) is self-explanatory, it is applied to all previous games. The firm's newest consoles all come with DirectStorage. Similar to the components that are part of the Xbox Velocity Architecture, SSDs specifically created for the platform will provide quicker load times and better performance. Finally, the next Xbox One update will feature cloud gaming capabilities for Xbox Cloud Gaming. To be very clear, there is no reason why the Xbox software on Windows 11 cannot also come to Windows 10. Windows 10 users alone may be said to know if they will have access to the feature at this time.

A new Microsoft Store "It will allow developers and artists to more readily expand their operations." At his Build conference keynote, Satya Nadella said This is a significant advance in our goal of establishing a new Microsoft Store. Please note that this is just one part of the update in its entirety. It hasn't occurred on the Store for desktop apps in the way that Microsoft would have liked. New features have been included in Windows 11 with the most recent release. As a result, developers will no longer need to package programs, and they will also be able to host them on their content delivery network, meaning that they won't need to be sent by Microsoft. This will lead to a huge increase in the number of Microsoft Stores. Many major apps, such as Google Chrome, have been excluded in the past because of Microsoft's limitations. Now, it's much easier to get your app accessible on the Store. There's no attempt on Microsoft's part to distinguish between various kinds of software. Using any type of cross-platform inclusive framework, such as Win32, .NET, UWP, Xamarin, Election, React Native, Java, or PWA, a developer may use whatever framework is preferred. Microsoft wants these framework options to be in the store. In agreement with Microsoft, Adobe Creative Cloud, Disney+, TikTok, and Zoom will be accessible on the Store. The virtual workplace will have access to Microsoft Teams and Visual Studio. That is a very important issue concerning Visual Studio, in particular. There is just one thing that the company is interested in doing: to make a better store. Pop-up shops may assist you in discovering web-based app installations as well as finding and downloading apps. Developers may offer their products and services on their platforms. It says "Your app may utilize the platform that makes you the most money" since the other part of the sentence means that your app may stay on the Store, but it also means that your app could use the most profitable platform.

Teams integration

The software company is making Teams an integral component of the operating system. Team chat may be seen on the taskbar. You may now talk to your friends while working fast. With this application, you may easily send text messages to any of your friends who have not yet downloaded Teams. To utilize MMS group messaging, you won't be able to use SMS messages which go both ways. Another interesting thing to look forward to is the ability to begin presentations using the mute/unmute button on the taskbar as well as the taskbar's new "presenting" button.

Snap Layouts

The feature called Snap Assist made its debut in Windows 10, and the feature called Snap Layouts will be released in Windows 11. That is an excellent suggestion. In Windows 11, you may mouse over the “maximize” button and select from many different layout options. By placing an app on the screen, you're choosing a tile layout that puts your app where you want it. To fill out the form, you'll be able to use Snap Assist. For those who use ultra-wide screens, this may be useful. Previous to this, Microsoft has never given users the option to use several apps on the same screen.

Virtual Desktop wallpaper

Even though this is a little adjustment, it will have a huge impact on virtual desktop users. Since you can now select each desktop's wallpaper, you may use your own visual identity on each desktop.

Widgets

"Widgets" will display on the left side of the screen when a new panel is added. The company uses the expression "slipping out" when the glass slips out. For now, it's a question of interest and news. It will, however, have a fresh appearance. Outside developers will be allowed to use the platform in the future.

Conclusion

How to use Windows 10?

Windows 10 is a series of operating systems that originated in 2015. It is the third iteration of Windows. According to the company, it is the "biggest update in Windows history". It can be purchased online or as a download. Since the earlier versions of Windows, users have been able to download a trial version, and then if they want to continue using it, they have to purchase it at a cost of $US110. When installed, Windows 10 recognises how your smartphone works. It recognises when you tap on a finger, not a touchscreen. The interface, for instance, only works with a keyboard and a mouse. Microsoft also offers a subscription-based Windows 10 S version. This has its own apps and can only run apps that are from the Windows Store. Windows 10 S is only able to run apps from the Microsoft store. Windows 10 Home, which is Windows 10 Pro, will cost you $US119. Windows 10 Pro, which is Windows 10 Enterprise, is available for $US199. And Windows 10 Education, which is Windows 10 Pro, is $US299. Windows 10 Mobile is an operating system that Microsoft no longer supports, so users of Windows phones should get a new smartphone with Windows 10 Mobile.

Windows 10 Review

Windows 10 comes with a number of exciting features such as the "all-new" Microsoft Edge browser, the free Microsoft Paint, Windows Hello, as well as the ability to sign in to Windows with a fingerprint scanner. The Microsoft Edge browser has been overhauled. It has a snappier interface, auto-fill options, and built-in links to Pinterest, Reddit and even Pocket. Microsoft's Edge browser allows you to sign in with a single password, so you don't need to remember different passwords for all of your accounts. "For security and speed, Cortana can be enabled right from the start in Windows 10 S so that you can just ask your PC what you want to do," the company writes. "This makes getting things done faster and easier than ever." Windows 10 also allows users to swipe up on the app icons and scroll through different apps, giving it a similar experience to iOS or Android. Windows 10 can be accessed with a keyboard and mouse or a touchscreen. You can only move around the home screen if you are on a touchscreen. Additionally, you can drag your finger from the bottom to the top of the screen to close a window. Furthermore, you can't shut down or restart Windows 10 without a keyboard or mouse. To restart your PC, press and hold the power button for five seconds. Windows 10 has a much smaller footprint than previous versions, weighing in at 439MB for both the Home and Pro versions.

Which version should you get?

At the end of the day, the answer to which version of Windows 10 you should get is this: it depends on what you are doing and what apps you use. The Windows 10 Home edition will allow you to install only the applications that are pre-installed by Microsoft. It will be less stable, but will allow you to boot quickly and access some basic apps. However, it won't run apps from the Microsoft Store, which means you will have to download and install those applications on a Windows 10 Pro, which is the version that is used for professionals. If you are planning to use a laptop or a tablet, then the Home version will be fine. If you are planning to use your laptop as a desktop PC, then you will probably want to buy the Pro version. Microsoft recommends that you try out Windows 10 before you decide which version to buy. To do this, go to the setup process, select "Try the free upgrade", and then wait for Microsoft to send you an email. On March 31, Microsoft will charge $US49 for Windows 10 Home and $US99 for Windows 10 Pro. Both versions will also be available as a free upgrade for anyone on Windows 7, Windows 8.1, or Windows Phone 8.1. As part of the "Get Windows 10" promotion, Microsoft also offers free subscriptions to Office 365 Personal, OneDrive Personal, and OneDrive Business. A free trial is available for both services. However, if you don't want to pay the subscription fee, then you can download Windows 10 for free. You can also get Windows 10 Home or Windows 10 Pro but not both for free. Again, all you need to do is go to Settings, Update & Security, and click "Get a free upgrade to Windows 10".

And finally, there is the controversial "Get Windows 10 modification" that allows anyone to install Windows 10 with one click, using a tool called the Shockwave Flash Zero-day Malware Bundle. When you download the Shockwave Flash Zero-day Malware Bundle and run it, the installer will begin searching for a PC with a domain name containing the ending "sddwp.com". The malware then installs a modded version of Windows 10 (MS-Windows10-Client) to your computer with no prompts and without you knowing anything about it. It is only possible to uninstall the tool with the registry editor, and if you do so, you will need to re-download the Shockwave Flash Zero-day Malware Bundle. Finally, should you decide to buy Windows 10, there are free and paid-for support options. The former allows you to use live phone support, where you can talk to a specialist for up to 90 minutes. The latter are "simple" support options which allow you to get help on the Internet through a live chat. These are also free.

But should you buy Windows 10?

In my opinion, yes. There's a lot of hype around Windows 10, but it's real, and it's a lot better than anything else available on the market.

Windows 11 release date Windows 11 is set to be launched before the end of the Christmas season, and Microsoft says it will be called "Windows 11" because they want to avoid confusion with prior operating systems, including Windows 8 and 8.1. An operating system that is updated annually will also be released by the business. The tool Microsoft released on July 29, 2016, incorrectly flags machines that should not have any issues operating Windows 11. However, another program has been introduced, but it goes much farther in terms of giving the customer information on how well qualified they are for a PC.

How much is Windows 11?

Home versions of Windows 11 will be made available to Windows customers who already have the software, but they will have to be connected to the internet to download, install, and activate it.
