Introduction
Self-Portrait – Vincent Van Gogh, 1888
Page 6
Vincent Van Gogh created around 860 oil paintings during his short career. Most of the paintings were finished in the last two years of his life. But beyond his most famous creations, many people are unaware of what else he put onto canvas. Van Gogh was not a portrait painter. Outside of his self-portraits, very few of the people he painted can be recognizable as individuals. It maybe that he was just uncomfortable around people, so turned his attention to landscapes. Or it maybe the artist did not have the patience needed to take the time to place each stroke of paint required to bring out the personality of faces. It is common knowledge that Van Gogh did paint quickly, often finishing one piece of artwork in a day. There is no doubt, though, that the artist's work temperament made him a master of landscape paintings, - landscapes that included a lot of trees, the main subject of this book! The purpose of this simple pictorial is to share with you some of those lesser known Van Gogh paintings, by focusing on the trees found in his landscapes (with a few floral still lifes thrown in as well). I have selected what I believe are the best representative samplings of Van Gogh's arboreal art, as it is beyond the scope of this book to present every possible example. I am sure you will find as much delight in discovering these paintings as I have enjoyed in researching the works of Vincent Van Gogh to bring them to you.
