Introduction

This volume completes our presentation of all UCL Lahun papyri (all others being in Collier and Quirke 2002, 2004, see concordance pp.331-339 this volume). Over half of the great mass of papyrus fragments retrieved by Petrie from the town-site near al-Lahun (his 'Kahun') comprises administrative records, from commodity accounts to day-by-day copies of business letters and transactions ('journals'). In order to provide some order for this great range and quantity of manuscript, we have decided to present them as far as possible by their find group, rather than by narrower content type. Within each group or 'lot', we have followed the sequence of the item numbers given by Griffith in his sorting of the collection for publication 1889-1898. Part One In the first part of this volume, then, all items for which find group or 'lot' is known are recorded in 'lot' sequence, introduced by a summary of the lots, including reference to the items of non-administrative content published in the first two volumes of UCL Lahun Papyri (Collier and Quirke 2002 and 2004). Part Two Following the 'lots' in Part One, in Part Two we present the papyrus fragments for which no lot number can now be identified. As this is still a substantial quantity of material, and, crucially, as two batches of similar material are spread across the frames in which the collection is mounted, it did not seem sensible to follow the Petrie Museum registration sequence for the entire set, in UC number sequence (as we were able to do for the individually less dispersed Letters). In order to contribute to farther research into these fragmentary papyri, we have separated the items without 'lot' identity into three sets: (a) manuscripts characterised by small angular signs, comparable to the earlier (Senusret III) manuscripts among the Lahun temple papyri preserved in the Egyptian museums of Cairo and Berlin; (b) manuscripts characterised by large rounded signs, and in content by commodity transfers sometimes with reference to high officials or the Residence, and featuring the early to midThirteenth Dynasty treasurer Senebsumai; (c) all remaining items, in UC number sequence. Part Three At the end of the volume we append as Part Three all legible fragments of less certain content that we now consider less likely to be accounts. The principal item is the numerical table or tables on the back of UC 32107A, apparently mathematical exercises; we are grateful to Annette Imhausen for again supplying commentary on this piece, complementing her contribution with James Ritter on the previously identified mathematical fragments, in Collier and Quirke 2004. Classifying accountancy documents In order to improve access to particular research areas for users of this volume, some comments on classification of accounts are offered here. Accounts might be classified by the scope of reference what is the economic unit being managed, and where does that unit belong within the larger framework. The separable economic entities might be, at the broadest level, Residence/ 'estate of the king' (Egyptian pr nswt) and what are apparently its subsidiary units of 'town' (Egyptian niwt) and 'temple' (Egyptian ~wt n!_r'domain of the god'), alongside the estates of individuals assigned to those individuals by office or inheritance (Egyptian pr+office and pr it "house of the father" with pr mwt "house of the mother"). However, most fragments preserve no heading, and the economic unit is then difficult if not impossible to identify. In fact, even where headings are preserved, the frame ofreference tends to remain implicit rather than made explicit. Moreover, the separable categories or units might be interwoven in economic practice, complicating attempts to group fragments on this basis. Type of content might be a more realistic option for grouping accounts in research. The principal types of content might include commodity accounts, work lists, and 'journals' (being manuscripts with copies of varying types of document including letters). However, as with the estate types, these separable categories become entangled, in the economic practices of managing an estate or bureau. This may be seen from the categories of imy-r pr ~sb X "estate manager accountant of X" in late Middle Kingdom titles, as discussed in comparison with the early Twelfth Dynasty stela of the estate manager Usermont by Berlev 1978, 44-48: the principal objects of account are rmJ people, it grain, and k3wli~w/'wt livestock. Self-evidently, these three cannot be separated in the life of an estate, as people are needed to move grain and livestock, and grain feeds people and livestock. People, livestock and grain are generalised foci of attention, but the accountancy of one must imply the other. Letters and copies of letters illustrate this immediate interweaving in practice: even a broken document such as UC 32132 clearly moves from product delivery to labour supply issues over a few lines. Journals (chronologically ordered sequences of day-dated entries) such as UC 32190 confirm the necessary combination of the different foci or objects of account. Moreover, the three 'objects' are not

11

equal in relations of production and consumption: in the first, 'people', the labour is the object of control, whereas in the second and third, consumable product is focal. Nevertheless, the foci have the advantage of reflecting an ancient Egyptian expression of the division of economic practice. Turning to the Lahun accounts, we might apply this threefold Egyptian estate scheme, separating lists of labour from herd accounts from grain accounts. Berlev (1978) has documented in detail from Middle Kingdom titles the varying scope of pr "the House". In its broader geographical horizon, the estate beyond the walls of a house involves arable farming, irrigation work, herding and housing livestock, and large-scale grain storage. Within the walls of the house the products brought in from the outside estate are stored in smaller quantity and turned into consumable product in the sn' "the food-production sector". Finally, the living-quarters of the house at the centre of any richer estate would be the scene not only of consumption of products from arable land and animal husbandry, but also of storage of rarer foods (honey, oil) and inanimate material products (stone, metal, wood). For the latter, the ancient Egyptians used the term btmt "sealed goods", valuables; the pr-fuj, "white house" or "treasury" is its institutional form at the level of palace and town (for which see here UC 32102Aipr-M n niwt tn "treasury of this town"). Therefore, the world of the "estate manager" is only one part, even if dominant, in the life of a "estate/house"; the other is the life supported by those staples. Tools, furniture, pottery and stone vessels, jewellery, and above all cloth, all enter the accounts, though on a lesser scale than the estate beyond the walls with its herds and harvests. Here UCL Lahun papyri of identifiable content are grouped according to the object of account, keeping in mind the ancient Egyptian titles imy-r pr IJ,sbX "estate manager accountant of X", starting with documents featuring one type of object of account (e.g. just labour, or just grain), followed by those featuring more than one type (e.g. labour and grain). Among these examples, headings may identify the terms characterising a particular category as defined by type of (object of) account. These are no more than preliminary remarks to assist a researcher in orientation amid the large number of fragments. This initial listing makes explicit the general scope of what accountants might have recorded; minimal comments are appended to the first two categories, on labour and grain accounts. Future research may address how much of the accountancy spectrum entered the written record. Category 1 accounts with reference to people only 1. Lists of names of men (and boys?)= imy-rn.f Examples: imy-rn.f IJ,sbwitlJ,w-inrw"name-list of conscript stone-haulers", UC 3174, 32352 (perhaps without IJ,sbw) imy-rn.f mnyw "name-list of conscripts", UC 32168+32269 (prefatory heading snhy mnyw itlJ,w-inrw "roll-call of conscript stone-haulers"), 32182 Cf UC 32152B men brought as shortfall, 32170 workcrews name-list; 32190B vso name-list, mnyw "conscripts" in broken heading, 32272B itlJ,w-inrwmnyw(?) Labour control is the world of the imy-r pr J:isbrmJ accountant of people, the bJ n dd rmJ bureau for issue of people, and the b5 n '1f:iwtbureau of fields, where wpwt lists of household members were drawn up, according to UC 32163 (Lot 1.3: Quirke and Collier 2004:110-111 - an example of crossing or blurring categories in administrative practice, as the document is written by the imy-r pr J:isbif:iw"estate manager, accountant of livestock" rather than the accountant of people one might expect). The headings include reference to the executive operation snhy "muster" or "roll-call", where individuals were called to work and had to attend or, as in UC 32174 and 32168+32269, and perhaps 32127 vso and 3213 7H, send a substitute. Category 2 accounts with reference to grain and animal fodder 1. Cargo lists r!JtJtpw "amount of cargo" UC 32096C col.2 entry, grain (preserved entries), 32115G fodder?, 32144A vso, col.2 grain (preserved entries), 32177 (grain, dates, loaves) Cf UC 32108B two table headings "ship of[ ..]" after entry ofheqat-numerals and oil storage-jars CfUC 32190 A, col.4 arrival of boats with fodder 2. Miscellaneous Fragment UC 32279E includes a J:isbtrsst "calculation of bread-units" Fragment UC 32096C vso has an entry of grain "emerged from threshing-floor" Others have grain assigned to officials (for rations?): UC 32094A vso, col.2, 32143A vso Several fragments have quantities of grain calculated when assigned to a use, notably setting up regular provision e.g. for labour on a project: UC 32189 summary (sh1,ry)of grain amounts for directors ofworkgangs and other officials (cf perhaps UC 32109C for imy-r bwt) UC 32194 vso (grain with day-entries followed by note ofr(cw for stone-haulers) UC 32308 vso (grain di r c-(cw "assigned for (making) regular supplies") UC 32309D (grain for diw "rations" or to brewer or as b?kw "produce") Cf perhaps UC 32091B Comments: In theory, in any granary, there might be a need to check grain stocks, without reference to their use. In practice, within these accounts, but no item can be securely identified as stock-taking granary control, despite the great number of grain and grain-measure references among the accounts. All items concern the movement of grain into or out of granaries. The term r(cw"regular supplies" in other documents covers food-products produced within the regular, day-to-day functioning of an estate as economic unit, and stands in definitional opposition to inw "supplementary deliveries", where extra materials need to be brought in to the economic unit. For inw see Category 3, following.

UC 32272B CD files: UC32272TO-f (upper right), UC32272TO-b (upper left) Description h. 6.1 cm, w. 8.0+3.7 cm Group of singed fragments of a short hieratic accounts note relating to work namelists, in black on recto only, preserving parts of least four lines, mentioning stone-haulers conscripts and the title mty s3 "coordinator of a temple-staff watch"; main and second fragments mounted in inverse order left-right. Parts of all four edges appear ancient, indicating that this is a short communication or supplementary note on papyrus tom from a roll, rather than a fragment of a longer namelist over a whole sheet or roll.
