Carol Reed-Jones lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband, son, dog, and cat. She enjoys hiking, camping, backpacking, and watching Douglas squirrels from her living room window. She strongly believes in living in ways that preserve the earth and all life. In addition to her writing, Carol teaches music, directs an early music vocal group, and is completing her Master’s thesis in music history. This is her first book for children.

About the Author

JEANETTE CANYON

About the Illustrator Christopher Canyon is a professional artist who finds illustrating children’s books to be a positive, creative and challenging experience. He spends much of his time visiting schools, libraries and various organizations to discuss children’s book illustrating and to promote literature and the arts. Christopher also teaches art classes in Ohio where he lives with his wife, Jeanette, and their loving cat, Goppy. He has illustrated ten books for Dawn Publications.

Other distinctive nature awareness books from Dawn Publications: Stickeen: John Muir and the Brave Little Dog by Donnell Rubay, illustrated by Christopher Canyon. Surrounded by deep canyons of ice, John Muir and a little black dog wonder— are they doomed? How they handle the challenge, and are changed by it, creates a classic story—“the most memorable of all my wild days,” as Muir late wrote of this 1880 adventure in Alaska. The “John Denver & Kids” series: stunningly illustrated and adapted by Christopher Canyon, features some of John Denver’s greatest songs, including Sunshine On My Shoulders, Take Me Home Country Roads, Grandma’s Feather Bed, and Ancient Rhymes: A Dolphin Lullaby. Drop Around the World by Barbara Shaw McKinney. This book is a year-after-year favorite with teachers. It engagingly leads readers around the world following a drop of water — whether as steam or snow, inside a plant or animal, or underground — teaching the wonders and importance of the water cycle. (There is lots of geography, too.) Four pages of science about the qualities of water are included. The Dandelion Seed by Joseph Anthony. A dandelion can teach much about seeds and seasons and cycles, and the big world that a wind-blown seed can travel, but it also can make us appreciate the challenges it must overcome. This gorgeous book is at once simple and profound. You may be surprised and pleased by the questions and observations of your children after reading this together. This is the Sea that Feeds Us, by Robert F. Baldwin, links a fish dinner enjoyed by a thankful family with the entire marine food web. Beginning with tiny plankton, “floating free,” each verse introduces a new link and the connects it to everything else.
