INTRODUCTION 119 even when the flyleaves are preserved, ascription to San Marco and recognition of previous provenance is always arduous and frequently impossible. Hence if there is no flyleaf or the possession note is erased in an identified manuscript, the fact is re-

corded in the note to show that the specific guarantee of San Marco ownerhsip that the flyleaf furnishes is lacking. Identification in many cases was extremely easy where flyleaves giving the table of contents were preserved. In other cases,

in which some uncertainty usually arises, Prof. Ullman and I have tried to be conservative and not to make identifications unless we were fairly certain. At times we have indicated our doubt with a question mark in the note. Sometimes the catalogue has descriptions of two or three manuscripts of the same author, identical except for the color of the binding, now lost. In these cases it is impossible to tell which manuscript belongs to which description. I have noted the fact at the first item in the catalogue, with a cross reference to the second. Without doubt some identifications have been overlooked, and in other cases we were over-cautious.

A total of 626 manuscripts and 65 printed books have been identified, respectively 60 and 34 per cent of the total. Nevertheless I expect many more to be recognized, especially in libraries outside

Florence, where the indicative flyleaves have been preserved. Many more, lost or destroyed in the course of centuries, will never be found. The bench numbers on the flyleaves are normally of the type quoted above, e.g. «de 24 bancho ex parte orientis ». These numbers have often been changed, sometimes twice, as the arrangement of the library was modified through the years. The earlier of the two (or rarely, the second of three numbers) usually agrees with our catalogue.

There are indications that the catalogue is not complete: some

manuscripts were probably in the cells of the friars, others on loan outside. Certain books once in the hands of individual friars and later placed in the library are listed; others of this sort not in the list may have been presented after 1500. Books from the bibliotheca or armarium of the novitiates were not included, although some incunabula later transferred to the bibliotheca novitiorum are listed in the catalogue. Apparently most Italian books

120 THE CATALOGUE OF SAN MARCO were excluded. There are only a few commentaries on Dante, Naz. C.S. 1,V,8; L114; 11,30 (973-975), two volumes listed as «in vulgari»: Naz. C.S. I, VIlII,12 (479), Giovanni Dominici, De amore caritatis and Naz. C.S. I,III,23 (771), Prosdocimo de’ Beldomandi, Tabulae (ff. 1-13 only; the other items in this volume

are in Latin) and an incunabulum of Berlingheri’s Cosmographia (761). A fourth item (444) is said to contain at the end « quaedam summa vulgari sermone edita propter simpliciores pro debita sacramentorum administratione ». Since all the descriptions

are in Latin, some of the unidentified books could be in Italian but not be recognizable, as the commentaries and Cosmographia just mentioned. However, it is probable that few books in volgare were kept in the library. In general, volumes in languages

other than Latin or Greek were omitted from the catalogue: e.g. Niccoli’s manuscripts in old Slovenian (Laur. S.M. 742), Arabic (Ricc. 217) and Armenian (Laur. S.M. 780), even though they were present in the library (they are listed in the Milan catalogue as part of the Greek library, M 76-M 82). In the last bench of the Greek library, it appears that two manuscripts were cov-

ered by one description, as Laur. S.M. 303 and 304, one from Niccoli and the other from Politian, under 1217. Seven codices which belonged to Niccoli and are known to have

been in the San Marco library do not appear in this catalogue, four Greek: Laur. S.M. 226 (Euripides), 676 (Chrysostom), 684 (patristic selections), Vat. Barb. gr. 336 (liturgies), and three Latin: Laur. S.M. 738 (Genesis and Exodus), 763 (the gospel of John), Naz. C.S. I,11,13 (Paradisus). There are also other manuscripts which show a date of entry into San Marco before 1500, but have not been recognized in the catalogue: Naz. C.S. I,1I,48 (Commentaries to Porphyry, Aristotle and Cicero, «ex elemosinis de anno MCCCCLXXXVIII»), 1,V,so (Aristotle, Posterior Analytics, given by Cosimo in 1461), IIX,9 (Petrus Hispanus, Logica, 1475), Laur. 89 sup. 31 (Isidore, before 1480), one volume

of Politian’s and six of G.A. Vespucci. All these must have been out on loan at the time the catalogue was compiled. The printed items in the catalogue are marked by the word impressus, though the term is occasionally omitted. I have examined all the incunabula from San Marco now in the Laurentian 1. See chapter I, sect. 4.

INTRODUCTION [21 and the Nazionale and have identified the printed items whenever

possible. For unidentified volumes, I have given a reference to the relevant numbers in Hain, noting as well the place and date of the first dated edition and of the first dated edition printed in Italy. In preparing this edition of the San Marco catalogue, Prof. Ullman has expanded the abbreviations, substituted I for J and

introduced modern punctuation, but otherwise has followed the orthography of the manuscript. The few corrections made have been indicated. Wherever we have known them, we have indicated copyists and possessors. For descriptions and discussions

of the books once owned by Coluccio Salutati (of which there is a list in appendix m), see Ullman, The Humanism of Coluccio Salutati. The books of Niccoli are discussed in chapter II; those of other possessors in chapter I. For convenience of reference I

script. )

have numbered the items of the catalogue consecutively. The numbering of the items in each bench is that found in the manuWhere I have thought it might be useful, I have given references to more complete descriptions of the manuscripts. Invaluable for the difficult mathematical manuscripts is the work of A.A. Bjérnbo, «Die mathematischen San Marco-handscriften in Florenz», Bibliotheca Mathematica m Folge, 4 (1903) 238-45; 6 (1905) 230-38; 12 (1911-12) 97-132 and 193-224 (a photographic

copy is in the manuscript room of the Biblioteca Nazionale in Florence). Reference is occasionally made to P.O. Kristeller, Iter Italicum 1 and m1 (London-Leiden 1963 and 1967). In general, though, no attempt has been made to complete the descriptions given in the catalogue. Such an effort to give the exact contents of each identified manuscript, although useful, would have radi-

cally modified the nature of our task.

The notice « bought in Lucca by Cosimo, 1445 » refers to the . purchase discussed in chapter I, sect. 2. The number according to the 1768 catalogue has been placed after the modern signature of manuscripts not in the Laurentian San Marco collection. Only occasionally was it possible to indicate the number assigned at the same time to the printed books.

All printed texts have been marked in the margin with an asterisk.
