PREFACE The Kensington Mass is the unfinished draft of a poem which David Jones started to write in 1973 for inclusion in the second issue of Agenda to be devoted to his work, which we published in the Spring of 1974. It is an entirely new version _ of a fragment he first drafted c. 1940 but subsequently lost. We included as much as he had written up to the date 16.2.74 in Agenda. (Pages 7-12 of this book.) David Jones continued to work on the poem until his death on the 28th October, 1974. He intended us to publish it, when finished, as an Agenda Edition. Pages 7-12 are therefore the only parts which are in any sense completed and even this section was in the nature of a tentative draft. David Jones asked us to stress this at the time it was printed. He worked meticulously and there were passages he wished to revise before they appeared in book form. David Jones’s next of kin have kindly given us permission to publish the ms. of the continuation of the poem which we here reproduce exactly as it was left at his death. We also include a printed version tentatively constructed from the various drafts of this ms. by René Hague.
