Acknowledgments It is impossible to name all those without whose help we would have accomplished nothing, but in deeply felt gratitude we must first thank Pir Hassamuddin Rashdi and Mr. M. Ismail Noon, D. C. of Tatta. We hope that they will not regret their troubles, seeing this first result of our work. Many Pakistani officials took an active and personal interest in our research. We have to thank — besides those not named here — Mr. Mumtaz Hasan (Karachi), Mssrs. Ikram and Habib Ullah (Lahore), Mr. Abib Husain (Jhang), Mr. Massey (Sarghoda), and Mssrs. Karamchand, Kazi, and Shardah (Sujawal). Our colleagues were most helpful everywhere: Dr. Baluch (Hydera bad), Dr. Tassadouq (Lahore), Mr. Laghari (Hyderabad), and Mr. Medjit (Lahore) are representative here for many others. Although our Jat friends are mentioned here last, we do not thank them less. Mamun Khan and Musa Khan (Raj Malik), Ahmed Fakir Salarani (Jhongo), Abbas Kattiar (Atarki), Pir Achkan Shah and Mir Shahawaz Khan Jamali (Jacobabad) are people we shall never forget. Our German friends in Karachi and Lahore and the institutions that sponsored our research work, namely the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and the Free University of Berlin, will understand that we thank them here only collectively; there will be smother oppor tunity to give them credit in detail.
