NATURAL ARAN COLLECTION ince we opened our doors 7 years ago, baa ram ewe has

S always been committed to celebrating not only the beautiful Yorkshire sheep breeds which we see peppering the hills and dales of our county, but also the rich variety you find in the shade of fleece in these breeds, from pure snowy whites to deep,

almost black, browns. Our Dovestone Natural Aran uses the same luxurious Wensleydale, Masham and Bluefaced Leicester wool Dovestone dk yarn, but by altering the colours of these fleeces we have created a warm palette of creams and which lend themselves so well to warm winter layers.

blend of as our different browns

We have been thrilled and privileged to work with some of our

favourite designers in this collection, many of whom are known the world over for their stunning creations. Most of these pieces are reworkings of their previous designs, which have taken on a whole new life by being crafted in our latest yarn. We hope these designs and our yarns give you equal amounts of joy and warmth,

both when making and wearing them.

PATTERN NOTES Clever construction transforms a short scarf into

a dynamic cowl.

YARN USED

The first half of Arika is knit in a cushy 2 x 2 Ribbing creating a double layer of comfort while reducing bulk at the back neck. The second half transitions beautifully to an Eyelet Ribbing. The finished piece is blocked asymmetrically to create a flattering kerchief shape. Fringe is added to the outside border completing the look perfectly.

Shade #2, 1 x 100g skein

Rep rows 1 and 2 until cowl measures 62cm

(24%”) from cast on edge, ending with a RS row. Cast off loosely purlwise.

Blocking is used to create a sloping angular shape to the cowl before seaming. Stretch the bind-off edge to approximately 38cm/15” wide. Pin the outer edge of Eyelet Ribbing following the shape and measurements outlined in Schematic A. Leave the 2 x 2 Ribbing unstretched, it is not necessary to pin it down.

SEAMING With RS facing, bring the two ends together and seam the cast-on edge of the 2 x 2 Ribbing to the right hand side of the Eyelet Ribbing (see Schematic B). Be sure to keep the 2 x 2 Ribbing unstretched with the knit columns touching each other and the purls hidden. Seam into the knit stitches only — this keeps the neck opening generous and allows the cowl to have more structure.

SEAM

AROUND

ARMHOLE

lf you feel that the connection of the sleeve to the armhole is a little loose you can pull on the pick up tail of yarn (at centre of underarm stitches on the WS of the work) to tighten up the seam. Do this after working a couple of rnds of the sleeve. Be careful not to pull too hard. The armhole area will gather together as you pull and you will need to ease this out to avoid the armhole becoming too tight. It is best to work a small section at a time.

CARA SLEEVES

CUFF

The sleeves are worked by picking up stitches around the armhole and then working short rows to shape the sleeve cap. It is really important to pick up sts a full stitch into the edge of the armhole as this will create the best looking join. Make sure to go under 2 threads of yarn. The ratio for picking up sts is approximately 1 out of every 2 rows.

Rnd 1: (K1, p83) around. Rnd 2: Knit. Rep rnds 1 and 2 twice more then rnd 1 once more. Cast off all sts.

With RS facing and using the 6.5mm (US 10 ¥2) 40cm (16”) circular needle, rejoin yarn at the centre of the cast-off underarm sts. Pick up and knit O___ cast-off underarm sts, then pick up and knit P___ sts to shoulder join, pm, pick up and knit P___ sts down other side, then pick up and knit the remaining O___ cast-off underarm Sts.

COWL Using 5.5mm (US 9) needle, with RS facing and beginning at right back neck, rejoin yarn and pick up and knit W___ sts across back neck cast off sts, pick up and knit 1 st before shoulder join, then 11 sts down front (roughly 2 out of 3 rows), W__ sts across front cast off sts, 11 sts up other neck edge, then 1 st after shoulder join. XS SIS: Note: The cowl is knitted inside out so that the RS of the Garter Rib folds out when worn.

Q___sts total. SHORT

ROW

SHAPING

Please read the following instructions carefully before working sleeves. Wrap and turn for sleeves is different than for shoulders. Place marker for working in the rnd. Short row 1 (RS): Knit to R___ sts past the shoulder marker, w&t next st (for RS row). Short row 2 (WS): Knit to R__ sts past shoulder marker, w&t next st (for WS row). Rep these 2 short rows, working 1 st past the previous w&t each time, until all sts of sleeve except the underarm sts have been used up. After last w&t, knit to end of round. Next rnd: K1, purl to end, remove shoulder marker. Dec rnd: K1, k2tog, k to last 2 sts, ssk. 2 sts dec’d.

Continue working in Garter Stitch in the rnd (knit 1 rnd, purl 1 rnd) keeping the 1° stitch of every rnd in Stocking Stitch and repeat dec rnd every S___ rnd, T__ more times. U___ sts remain. Work even in pattern for V___ more rnds ending with a plain knit rnd.

Slip the last st picked up onto the LH needle, then slip the 2" stitch on the LH needle over this stitch and onto the RH needle so that these two stitches have crossed over each other and swapped places. Turn sweater inside out so that the inside (WS) is facing you, PM for beg of rnd.

Set-up rnd: *K Y__, kfb); rep from * to end. 96 sts Rnd 1: *K1, p3; rep from * to end. Rnd 2: Knit. Rep rnds 1 and 2 nine more times. Change to 6.5mm (US 10 ¥%) 60cm (24”) needle and rep rnds 1 and 2 eighteen more times. Cast off all sts.

FINISHING Weave in ends and close any holes at the underarm. Soak sweater in tepid water for 20 mins. Let water drain away and very carefully gather the sweater in a bundle and place on a thick towel. (It is really important not to pull up on one edge of the sweater as it will be very heavy and will stretch easily.) Roll the sweater up in the towel and press down on it to remove more water.

Block the sweater to the desired measurements being careful not to over stretch at this point.

WRAP

Prepare the yarn before commencing the pattern as follows: The shades A and D are made into two 40g (1.40z) balls and one 20g (0.702) ball each. The shades B and C are made into two 30g (10z) balls and two 20g (0.702) balls each.
