Identities and differences are determined; then all things sharing certain \< "marks," are grouped together in the same class. But literature, I contend, testifies to the sustained existence of an Other that is not epistemologically "mad," unavailable to us through representation. This Other is not Foucault's Other, whose voice has been suppressed by history; it is not the human subject expelled ("so as to exon the interior danger") or imprisoned, shut away inside representation ("in order to reduce its otherness" [xxiv/15]). Certainly there is a political Other in these texts characters who are excluded because their religion, sex, or race marks them as a threat to a stable political order. The heroine's loss and sacrifice seem unpromising subjects for tracing how the epistemological field is expanded in the classical period. On the surface of things, both loss
