COCOON In the olden days it was customary in every home to have at least one silk weaving to make silk cloth for personal use. Nowadays, though such practice is not generally existed, many people still raise silk. The rearing of silk worms is prevalent in the north eastern part of Thailand notably in the provinces of Chaiyapoom, Srisaket, Surindr, Khonkaen, Ubol, Skolnakorn, and Kalasin. Thai silk worms may be reared all year round. The time from May until November is the suitable time for hatching silk moth since there is plenty of mulberry leaves for feeding. Reeling of raw silk is effected by new type of reeling machine to obtain silk thread of good quality. Silk is also exported in the form of cocoon to Hongkong and ]apart. National Thai silk cloth is currently in great demand in overseas market and the silk business is being expanded. Cocoon Export Statistic

CORN
Thailand has a climate which permits two crops of corn a year. The first crop is planted in April and May and the second in August and September. Corn is grown all over the country and extensively cultivated in the north_east. The production of corn has been increasing appreciably. In 1958 the figure was about 186,000 tons and 162,914 tons were exported, earning nearly 183 million baht. Corn has in recent years become one of the important products, ranking fifth in the export list in 1959. Practically every part of the corn can be utilized. The cob is used as fuel and in the manufacture of certain chemicals, the seed Cr kernel as food, poultry feed, and for making alcohol, starch, glucose syrup, cooking oils, a fine grade of machinery oil & synthetic rubber from which most of pencil erasers are made. From the stalk and the leaves, we get cellulose, photographic film, smokeless gunpowder, paper stock, fertilizers, chemicals, and sound proofing materials.

COTTON Two varieties of cotton are grown, é.e. Cambodian and indigenous cotton. Both the Cambodian cotton and the native cotton are of medium staple, about 7/8 of an neb. Area under cultivation in 1958 was 257,521 rais (503,008 acres ) with the yield of 34,746 tons. It is mainly cultivated in the nor tb-east and the central part of the country. Formerly cotton used to be an article of exports but during the last decade the production bad declined and did not even satisfy the local needs. Since then practically no cotton was exported. However, cotton is expected to regain its former status as an export. commodity since its development is being carried out.
