ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Permission to use appropriate illustrations from Willis Lynn Jepson's "A Manual of the Flowering Plants of California," "Flora of California," and "Trees, Shrubs and Flowers of the Redwood Region" was granted by the Trustees of the Jepson Herbarium, University of California, and also, for the third title, by the Savethe-Redwoods League. The remainder of the illustrations were drawn mainly by Emily Reid and Charlotte Mentges (the latter also painted the cover-design), while Jean Colton illustrated the plant-terms. A few kodachromes are by G. T. Robbins, from the Jepson Herbarium; most are by Charles Webber from the collections of the California Academy of Sciences, the Sierra Club, the Jepson Herbarium, and the University of California Herbarium. I am appreciative of all the assistance received from these people and institutions and, in addition, from my colleagues.
