Take a moment, breathe and be present as you answer these 26 questions honestly. Grab a pen and write your thoughts. No one is reading the answers except for you. Some of these answers might be painful to face and answer but try to dig deep and perhaps you can find out some things about yourself and you can write yourself a guide that will lead you towards recovery.

1. What age did you start your addiction and how? Why did you start?

2. Try to think of your mindset before your addiction and your priorities back then. What were your top 5 priorities? What are your top 5 priorities now? Have they changed?

3. Since you’ve started, how much money have you spent for this addiction?

4. Are you living your passion?How has your addiction affected your performance in school/work/career/goals/aspirations? Do you have goals or dreams that you have been ignoring? What are they? If not, what did you want to be when you were a child?

5. If your life looked exactly the way you wanted it to, what would it look like? (Relationships, career, spirituality, etc.)

6. What can you do in order to move towards this dream life? What would your life look like if you never acted on these things? Is that a life that’s worth it to you?

7. What are you doing that is moving you further from this dream life? Why do you do it? What will your life look like if you continue?

8. If there were any negative consequences, obstacles or fears, related to achieving my success, what might they be?

9. Has your addiction gotten you into legal trouble?

10. How is your family affected by your addiction? Name them and explain how each of them were affected.

11. How have your friends been affected by your addiction? Name them and explain how each of them were affected.

12. How has your addiction affected your mental health? How was your mental health before?

13. How has your addiction affected your self-image? Do you like yourself?

14. What is your greatest insecurity?

15. Are you happy? Why or why not?

16. What are you most afraid of?

17. Do you have a strong social circle? Can you rely on them? Are you afraid of asking people for help? Why or why not?

18. Are you satisfied with the relationships you have in your life? Why or why not? What holds you back from having satisfying relationships? Do you trust people? What scares you most about relationships? Are there toxic people in your life? Why?

19. What was your relationship with your parents like growing up? Was it healthy, did you feel unseen/unfelt, did you feel unconditionally loved? How has this affected your relationships now?

20. What does your addiction do for you? What benefits does your addiction provide? (ex. Escape from reality, relief from pain, pleasure, sense of meaning/connection/control)

21. What causes the most pain in your life? What problem in your life are you trying to solve with your addiction? What is the source of this? (ex. loneliness/isolation/disconnection, lack of meaning in life, unresolved trauma, stuck in an unsatisfying situation, etc.)

22. Why do you feel like you cannot resolve this pain in a healthy way? What are the biggest obstacles from overcoming this pain in a more beneficial way? (ex. Feelings of inadequacy, financial circumstances, hopelessness, toxic relationships, poor self-image, etc. )

23. How has your addiction affected your spirituality? Are you, or were you spiritual?

24. How is your relationship with God? Do you have one? When was the last time you prayed? Do you feel guilty with your current standings with God?

25. What is the name of the person you care about the most? Can you draw a picture of them?

26. Reread all of your answers. If you found out that this person that you care about was going through all of these things that you just wrote down previously, how would that make you feel? What would you predict about this person’s future? What would you do to help this person? What advice would you give this person?

Thanks for going through these questions, good on you for sitting down and writing all of this down. I hope you learned a bit more about yourself. Seriously, it’s not an easy task and you should feel proud of yourself. Hopefully this gave you some more insight. You’re on your way to peace.
