undamentaltoeverythingtheRAFtriestoachieveisthe equipmentwehaveatourdisposal,muchofwhichrelies onworld-beating,cutting-edgehightechnologythathasbeen testedinconflict.Itisthisequipmentthatwhenoperated, maintainedandsupportedbyhighlyprofessionalpersonnel,makesthe RAFatrulypotentdelivererofAirPower. Indefenceofourairspaceathomeandabroad,theTornadoF3 maintainsourQuickReactionAlertwiththeASRAAMmissile,whichisthe mostup-to-dateandeffectiveair-to-airmissiledeployedanywhereinthe world.Thenextgenerationair-to-airmissile,theMeteor,afire-and-forget missile,willgivetheRAFafurthersignificantadvanceinmissilecapability whenitentersserviceearlyinthenextdecade.Thecombinationof TyphoonandMeteorwilldefeatallcurrentandprojectedair-to-airthreats fortheforeseeablefuture. Forexpeditionaryoperationsoverseas,thebackboneoftheRAF’s offensiveaircraftistherecentlyupgradedground-attackversionof theTornado,calledtheGR4,whichcarriesacomprehensivesuiteof sophisticatedweaponsandequipment.Alsointhisroleisoneofthe RAF’smostversatilecombataircraft,theHarrierGR7.Intime,theHarrier GR7willbeupdatedwithnewenginesandavionicsandwillbe redesignatedtheGR9.Lookingevenfurtherahead,theGR9willbe replacedwiththeShortTake-OffandVerticalLandingvariantofthe LockheedMartinJointStrikeFighter,whichwillincorporatestealth technologyandiscapableofcarryingtwicethepayloadofaHarrier,over twicethedistance. Aswellasupgradingaircraft,theRAFisbuyinganewrangeof offensiveweapons,whichcombinepinpointaccuracywithaveryhigh survivabilityrate.OnesuchweaponisStormShadow,whichwashighly successfulduringtherecenthostilitiesinIraq.Aswellasproviding improvedoperationalcapability,theseprecisionweaponswillreduce greatlytheriskofcollateraldamageandciviliancasualties. ReconnaissanceremainsoneofthemostvitalfunctionsoftheRAF. ThereconnaissanceversionsoftheTornadoGR4,theJaguarGR3andthe HarrierGR7areusedinthetacticalreconnaissancerole.Thiscapability hasbeenfurtherenhancedbytherecentintroductionintoserviceofthe RaptorpodfortheTornadoGR4,whichprovideshigh-resolutionimaging atanextremelylongrangeandrepresentsthemostsophisticateddualbandreconnaissancesystemfortacticaljetsintheworld.Operated together,RaptorandtheTornadoGR4areatrulyworld-beating combination.Intheelectronicintelligencegatheringrole,the introductionoftheSentinelR1in2005willcompletethethirdarmofthe ISTARtriadofSentinelR1,E-3DSentryandNimrodR1. ThesecapabilitiesaresupportedbyAirTransportandSupport Helicopterfleets,whicharealsoenjoyingenhancementswiththerecent arrivaloftheC-17Globemasterforstrategicheavy-liftoperationsandthe introductionintoserviceoftheHerculesC-13OJandtheMerlinHC3 helicopter.DevelopmentworkontheA400Mismovingforwardandwork onotherprojects,suchastheselectionofthefuturestrategictanker aircraft,isunderway. Thepurposeofthispublicationistodetailthewiderangeof equipmentthatisusedbytoday’sRAFandtointroducetheplatformsand systemsofthefuture.Overall,theRAF’scurrentequipmentprogrammeis themostexcitingithaseverhadanditwillensurethattheRAFcan commandairsuperiorityanddominatethebattlespaceacrossland,sea andair.Ihopethatyouenjoyreadingit.

heTornadoF3istheRAF’sCounter-Air OperationsFighter.Originallyadevelopment fromtheTornadoGR1,theF3wasintroduced asalong-rangeinterceptoraircraftfordefenceofUK airspace.Changesinoperationaltasks,alongwiththe experiencegainedduringtheGulfWarin1991,ledtoa majorCapabilitySustainmentProgramme(CSP)ofthe aircraft.TheF3iscapableofcarryingfourSkyflash semi-activemissilesandfourAIM-9LSidewinderpassive Infraredair-to-airmissiles.AfterCSPmodification,the aircraftisfurthercapableofreplacingSkyflashwith AdvancedMediumRangeAir-to-AirMissiles(AMRAAM)

andSidewinderwithAdvancedShortRangeAir-to-Air Missiles(ASRAAM).Theaircraftcanalsocarrythe Alarmmissileandhasa27mmMausercannononthe starboardsideoftheairframewitha180roundcapacity. Either1500litreor2250litreexternalfueltankscanbe carriedwhich,alongwithairrefuelling,increasesthe aircraft’sendurance. TheTornadoF3usestheBAESystemsFoxhunter multi-mode,track-while-scan,pulsedopplerair-intercept radartodetectandtargethostileaircraft.Itcanengage multipletargetssimultaneously,andhasanIntegrated IFFandground-mappingmode.Thefrontcockpithas ahands-on-throttle-and-stickcapability,togetherwith ahead-updisplayandanelectronichead-downand threat-warningdisplay.Intherearcockpittheweapons systemsofficerhastwomulti-functiondisplayscreens withathreat-warningdisplayandaradarcontrolpanel. Allaspectsofbothcockpitscanbeoperatedusingnightvisiongoggles.Thesituationalawarenessoftheaircrew isenhancedbyaJointTacticalInformationDistribution System(JTIDS),whichcomplementsthecommandand controlcommunicationsofferedbyoneU/VHFradio, oneHavequickradio,anHFsystemandasuiteofIFF transpondersandinterrogators.JTIDSallowstheF3 tointerconnectwithnumeroussourcesandusersof information;theUHFline-of-sightcommunications systemcanbesupplementedbyrelayplatforms and,insomecases,satellitecommunications.For defensivepurposes,theaircraft’sradarhomingand warningreceiverenhancesthreatdetectionandthe F3isequippedwithchaffdispensersandinfrared decoyflares.
TherearefouroperationalF3squadronsandthe OperationalConversionUnit.No11(F)andNo25(F) SquadronsarebasedatRAFLeeming,whileNo43(F) andNo111(F)SquadronsarebasedatRAFLeuchars, togetherwithNo56(R)Squadron,whichistheF3 OperationalConversionUnit.TheTornadoF3 OperationalEvaluationUnit(OEU)iscurrentlyhosted atRAFWaddington,buttheOEUwillreturntoRAF Coningsbyin2004.FourF3aircraftarebasedinthe FalklandIslands,wheretheyformNo1435Flight.

TheGR4cancarryuptothreePavewayII,two PavewayIIIorEnhancedPavewayLaserGuidedBombs (LGBs),andbyusingaThermalImagingAirborneLaser Designation(TIALD)poditisabletoself-designate targetsforLGBdelivery.TheGR4alsohasagroundmappingradartoidentifytargetsforthedeliveryof conventional1000lbbombsandBL755clusterbombs. AllGR4aircraftarecapableofcarryingtheAir LaunchedAnti-RadiationMissile(ALARM),which homesontheemittedradiationofenemyradarsystems andcanbeusedforthesuppressionofenemyair defences.TheGR4iscapableofcarryinguptonine ALARMmissilesoramixedconfigurationofALARM missilesandbombs.Inthereconnaissancerolethe GR4cancarrytheJointReconnaissancePodtoprovide detailedreconnaissanceimagery;thisiscurrentlybeing replacedwiththeRAPTORpod,whichprovidesaneven greaterday-and-nightreconnaissancepotential. TheTornadoGR4isnowbeingequippedwiththe StormShadowmissileandwillsoonbeequippedwith thenewBrimstonemissile.TheStormShadowwill allowtheTornadotomakeprecisionstrikesinpoor weatherwithagreatlyincreasedstand-offrangefrom
thetargetarea.BrimstonewillprovidetheTornado withaneffectiveanti-armourweapon,alsoproviding anenhancedstand-offrange. TheTornadoGR4iscurrentlyoperatedfromtwo bases.BasedatRAFLossiemoutharetheOperational ConversionUnit,No15(R)Squadron,andNos12,14 and617Squadrons.RAFMarham,thehomeofthe GR4sofNos9(B)and31Squadrons,alsohousesthe GR4AsofNosII(AC)and13Squadrons.TheGR4Ais equippedwiththeTornadoInfraredReconnaissance system,whichprovidesalow-leveltactical reconnaissancecapability.

TheHarrier’suniquefeatureisitsabilitytovector thePegasus-enginethrust.Thisvectoredthrustenables ittooperatefromshortlandingsurfacesandtotakeoff

Theflyingcontrolsworkonthe‘Hands-on-Throttleand-Stick’system(HOTAS),enablingthemostimportant weaponsandavionicsfunctionstobeoperatedbythe pilotwithouthavingtoremovehishandsfromthe controls.Informationisdisplayedtothepilotthrough theHead-UpDisplay(HUD)andisalsopresentedon twomulti-purposecolourdisplays(MPCDs).Thepilot canusetheMPCDstodisplayalmostanysystem information,includingtheaircraft’spositiononamoving mapdisplay,andtheweaponloadbeingcarried.The MPCD’scanalsodisplaytargetpicturesobtainedfrom theaircraft’ssensors.ThepicturefromtheDual ModeTracker,asixtimesmagnificationtelevision cameramountedonthenose,orfromtheMaverick missileseekerhead,canalsobedisplayed,togetherwith aThermalImagingAirborneLaserDesignator(TIALD) tracking-and-targetpictureifaTIALDpodiscarried. Duringnightoperations,theForwardLookingInfrared pictureispresentedonaMPCDandisalsooverlaid ontotheHUD.Allthedisplaysarecompatiblewith night-visiongoggles,whichgivestheHarrieritsabilityto operatebynight,atlowlevel. TheHarriercancarryafullrangeofair-to-ground weapons,includingPavewayIIandPavewayIIIlaser guidedbombs,BL755clusterbombs,CRV-7rockets andMaverickmissiles.Fordefensivepurposes,the HarriercanalsobearmedwithAIM-9LSidewinder air-to-airmissiles,anditisfittedwitharadarwarning
receiver,anelectronicjammingpod,amissileapproach warningsystemandchaffandflaredispensers. WhenflyingatlowleveltheHarriercruisesat 420kts(480mph)andthentypicallyincreasesspeedto 480kts(550mph)whendeliveringweapons.Thisgives italow-levelcombatradiusofapproximately250nmls. WhenoperatingatmediumleveltheHarriercruisesat 0.75Machandhasacombatradiusofapproximately 350nmls.Theserangesvaryuponthetaskingrequirement andweaponloadbeingcarriedandcanbeincreasedby theuseofin-flightrefuelling. TheHarrierisaverycapableaircraftandhasproven tobeavaluableassetoverthepastfewyearsinmany campaignsincludingthoseinBosnia,Kosovoand Iraq.TheGR7willsoonundergoaseriesofmajor improvements,withchangestoboththeavionicsand totheengine,andwillberedesignatedtheGR9.

TheRAF’sJaguarsareallbasedatRAFColtishall, whichishomeforthethreeoperationalsquadrons, Nos6Squadron,41(F)and54(F)Squadrons,andthe JaguarOperationalConversionUnit,No16(R)Squadron. Allthreeoperationalsquadronsareabletoconduct attackandreconnaissanceoperations,althoughNos6 and54(F)Squadronsareprimarilyattacksquadrons, whileNo41(F)Squadronisprimarilyareconnaissance squadron.

EarlyproductionaircraftwillbepoweredbyaPratt andWhitneyF-135turbofanengine,butthereareplans forsubsequentaircrafttobeofferedwithachoiceof aninterchangeableF-136enginebeingdevelopedby GeneralElectric.Verticalliftandhoverwillbeachieved bymeansofaRolls-Roycedevelopedlift-fansystem. Doorsinstalledaboveandbelowtheverticalfanopen asthefanpowersuptoprovideverticallift.Thisvertical liftisusedinconjunctionwiththemainengineexhaust nozzleattherearoftheaircraft,whichswivelsdown fromthehorizontaltoprovidetherequiredlift. Atotalof25CMk1andCMk3aircraftarebeing replacedbytheC-130JCMk4/CMk5onaone-for-one basis.TheCMk4isalmostthesamesizeasthecurrent CMk3aircraft,butwithaslightlylongerfuselage,while theCMk5isthesamesizeastheCMk1.TheC-130J hasbeenmodifiedandupgradedtoincludenew AllisonAEturbopropenginesandDowtyAerospacesixbladedcompositepropellers.Thenewenginesand advancedpropellers,coupledwithanewdigitalenginecontrolsystem,givetheC-130Jincreasedtake-offthrust andbetterfuelefficiency;thustheexternalfueltanks havebeenomitted.Theaircraftalsohasarevisedflight deckwithmodernglass-cockpitandhead-updisplays, allowingtwo-pilot,flightdeckoperation.Thecockpit isfullynight-visioncompatiblewiththeuseofnightvisiongoggles.Aseparateairloadmasterstationhas beenestablishedinthecargohold.Theaircraftis restrictedtoanATroleatthemoment,pendingmilitary clearanceforwideruseinthetacticalTSrole. TheJaguarGR3hastwocannonshousedinport andstarboardgunbaysinthelowercentrefuselage. Thecannon’s30mmammunitioniscontainedintwo boxesmountedincompartmentsabovethegunbays, witheachboxholding150roundsformedintoabelt bymetallinks.Duringfiring,thespentcartridgecases areejectedoverboardandtheemptylinksareretained inacompartmentinboardandbelowthegunbays. IALDisasecond-generationlaserdesignator pod,whichinitiallyenteredserviceinthe 1991GulfWarwhenitwasfittedtoRAF Buccaneerstoallowthemtoactaslaserdesignatorsfor thebombscarriedbyTornadoGR1s.Thepodsare designedtobeoperated24-hoursadayandcomprisea high-resolutionFLIR(forwardlookingInfrared),alaser designatorandatrackingsystem.Mostprevious designationsystemsrequiredthepilotorweapons systemsofficer(WSO)tokeepthetargettracked manually;however,TIALDallowsautomatictracking oncethetargetislocked.Initially,theTIALDpodis pointedatthetargetbytheaircraft’snavigationsystem; oncethepilotorWSOhasidentifiedthetargetonhis cockpitdisplaytheaimingcrossispositionedoverthe targetandthepodisswitchedintoautomatic-tracking mode.Attheappropriatemomentduringtheattack, theTIALDlaseristurnedon,whichprovidesthebomb’s guidancesystemwiththerequiredinformationto completetheattack.Thewholeprocessisrecordedand
canbereplayedafterlandingtoassessthesuccessof themission. 51mm Mortar The51mmMortarisanindirect-firesupportweapon. Itisaneffective,simple-to-operate,lightmortarthat canfirehigh-explosive,illuminationorsmokerounds toarangeofapproximately800metres.Theweapon isexcellentagainsttroopsintheopen,orforproviding illuminationorinstantsmoke-screens.Thelowweight ofthebarrel,andtheconveniently-smallammunition thatiscarriedinabandolier,makethe51mmMortar apopularweapon.Oneofthe51mmMortar’sprime virtuesisthatitdoesnotrequirecomplexcommandand-controlarrangementstoestablishtargetsquickly indevelopingsituations.Theindirectfireofthe51mm Mortarmakesitanidealweaponforuseinbuilt-up areasorforreachingdeadgroundthatisbeingusedas protectivecoverbyenemytroops.
