metnin tamamuini bilim adamlarinin tedecdesiae sunmustur. Murad’a sunmustur. Bununla Anadoluhalkina iletilmek istenen mesaj

for the use of scholars. From the point of view of fifteenth-century Ottoman history, the Jami‘u’t-tawarikh is of great importamce as a general history. At the beginning of the fifteenth century, the fate of Anatolia had not yet been definitively determined. Like other beyliksin Anatolia, the Ottomans were vying to establish political unity in Anatolia, and mere military and economic power was not sufficient for achieving success: it was also necessary to provide the rising Ottomans with prestige in the eyes of the masses. The only way to secure for the Ottomans this prestige, this ‘nobility’ —i.e. legitimacy—was to prove that they came from a noble and legitimate tribe. The most trustworthy source on their tribe, the Qayi tribe, was the section in Rashiduddin’s work about the tribes of Central Asia. A chancery scribe named Yazicizade Ali translated the section in Rashiduddin’s

introduction that deals

with the Turkish and Mongol tribes and placed it at the beginning of his general history of the Seljuqs, the Oghuzndme, which he presented to Murad 1! in 1425. The message intended to be conveyed thereby to the people of Anatolia was: “Your legitimate rulers come from the Ottoman family because they are from the noble Qayitribe.” And thus, by conveying Rashiduddin’s evidence, in Turkish, to the people of Anatolia, Yazicizade Ali provided the prestige necessary forthe Ottomans.
