PREFACE

One of the great weaknesses of modern engineering design practice is lack of information-retrieval facilities for obtaining scientific and technological information relevant to the design. It is vital for the designer to learn what is known in the literature about the physical phenomena controlling his design, what analytical techniques are available for predicting its performance, what engineering elements and components are available from suppliers, and what similar devices or systems have been designed before and how well they worked. When confronted with a new problem, the engineer often scarcely knows where to turn for such information. Even in our modern society this information is extremely difficult to obtain, so difficult that all too often designers do not try, and either rely wholly on intuition or repeat experimental and development work already in the literature. It is a tragic failure of modern technology that untold vast quantities of information lie lost and unused in our literature. There is some hope that the advent of giant computerized information-retrieval centres will soon alleviate this problem. This is particularly true of mechanizing the search for journal papers and magazine articles on very specific topics for which the designer is able to make very specific requests. However, very often the designer requires broad generalized information that is difficult to specify and is usually found in books. He needs reference lists of books and general papers under broad subject-catagories. By browsing he can find in such lists sources of information of a type he may not have realized even existed, and therefore could not have requested from either a librarian or mechanized information-retrieval systems. Such a list is also a convenient bibliography of available books and basic papers in various subject categories. This book is an attempt to meet this need in the general field of Mechanical Engineering. It is also intended to show the user the techniques of using information sources. The book should be useful to designers, researchers, and teachers in all areas of Mechanical Engineering. There is considerable overlap with other disciplines and the book should be useful to other categories of engineering, related applied fields such as architecture and industrial design, and the experimental sciences.

It is also becoming clear that practising design engineers, to avoid obsolescence, must now spend a large portion of their working time extending their knowledge and learning new engineering theory. References such as these, kept updated, are a useful basis for such study. The author would welcome corrections and suggestions for additions to this book for future editions.

USING

SOURCES

When seeking information the engineer must follow trails. The sources under Literature-Design are the most valuable for starting a very cold trail. They lead to indexes and abstracts. Often the seeker can do surprisingly well simply by browsing through appropriate journals. Reference leads to reference until a whole bibliography is built up. However, usually it takes a year or two to get on exhaustive bibliography of books and papers in a specific topic. There are a few key indexes and abstracts under LITERATURE-DESIGN which are invaluable for starting information trails. These are the Engineering Index, the Applied Science and Technology Index, the British Technology Index, the Classed Subject Catalog of the Engineering Societies Library, and A Guide to U.S. Indexing and Abstracting Services in Science and Technology. Using these sources, the designer may identify for himself the specific books and articles that he requires. Indexes and abstract services in the science fields and special engineering fields are listed in the last item above. Photocopies of articles can be obtained directly from major libraries listed below. Bound periodicals and books. may be obtained on interlibrary loan through a local library. At an even higher level of generality as a source of information is the National Referral Center for Science and Technology, The Library of Congress, Washington, D . C., 20540. The Center is designed to provide a single place to which scientists and engineers may turn for advice on where and how to obtain scientific or technical knowledge .:,f any kind. It does not answer technical inquiries directly, nor does it furnish bibliographic assistance. It functions as an intermediary, directing those who need information to those who can provide it. They encourage direct telephone enquiries - the number is area code 202, 967-8265 . Similar information may be found from the International Federation for Documentation in Bibliogra,phy of Directories of Sources of Information at the Hague. It may be helpful to the designer to know of journals and other periodicals which may publish information on the subject in which he is interested . He can use their indexes, or simply browse through the periodicals. Lists of such periodicals may be found in references under LITERATURE-DESIGN. The United States government publishes several indexes and abstracts of their technical publications . Technical societies and manufacturers' associations are fruitful sources of information. Sources for these are also ~nder LITERATURE-DESIGN. There are actually two aspects to engineering information retrieval - searching the literature, and keeping up with the literature in a given field. We have examined the former ; there are also aids available for the latter problem. The Engineering Index has an index card service in which abstract cards of articles are made available in approximately 300 "Field of Interest 2

Divisions". Subscribers to individual divisions receive cards once a week. The Eidg . Technische Hochschule Bibliothek has a similar service. Monthly reviews and indexes in various fields are available, including government publications. Periodicals listing and reviewing new books are useful for learning about new references . All of these may be found under LITERATURE-DESIGN . Finally there is the possibility of the designer maintaining his own indexing and abstracting system. Such systems, under the present state of the art, are limited to a rather narrow field of interest, even when supported by a large organization. The most widely used system is that sponsored by the Engineers Joint Council. This is commonly called the co-ordinate indexing, key word or uniterm system . An indexer selects a set of key words which describe the essential nature of the book or article to be indexed. A standard set of key words is used, and one very broad set is provided in the Thesaurus of Engineering Terms . Each book or article is also given an accession number which is not coded in any way. The system is made up of a card file containing a card for each standard key word; and an accession number card file in which each card represents each book or article indexed. The cards in this latter file commonly carry an abstract. When the key words are selected they are entered on an accession number or catalog card together with the title, author, etc . , and usually an abstract. The file must now be inverted so that the accession number is added to each keyword file card. The accession number from the abstract card is entered on the corresponding keyword card in the column which corresponds to the units digit. The cards are illustrated on the next page. We have seen how the information is stored; it must also be conveniently retrievable. To do this the searcher selects a set of key words which he believes adequately describ-e his problem. As a simple example, suppose the designer is concerned with the problem of buckling of tubes or pipes under external pressure . He might use the key words - "tubes", "pipes " , "buckling", "pressure" . The corresponding key word cards are examined and whenever an accession number is found that is common to all or most of the cards, it can be anticipated that the corresponding book or articles concerns the topic of search. The searcher then, of course, uses the accession number or catalog file to identify the publications. The system may or may not include actual holding of the publications. It may also be automated at various levels of sophistication. References describing the system in more 3

On the premise that state-space modeling should be an important part of any fundamental system-analysis course, whether it is electric network theory, dynamics, hydraulics, or control systems, then the elements of linear graph theory form a useful basis on which a standard formulation procedure can be defined . It is shown that an electric network can be viewed as a set of interconnected components and that the linear graph is a useful tool for generating the independent voltage and current constra'ints imposed on the characteristics of the components by their interconnection. It is further shown that these constraint equations, when processed together with the component equations, lead directly to a set of first order differential equations called state equations. These equations, in linear or nonlinear form . are ready for compuier simulation or analytic solution by Laplace transform or matrix function techniques. Examples are given. and it is stated that network models in state space can be formulated and solved in the first network courses at the sophomore or junior level.
