Методические рекомендации к УМР “Mastering grammar through multimedia” (на основе фильма “National treasure (2004)) Учебно-методическая разработка предназначена для использования на занятиях по иностранному языку у курсантов первого курса МосУ МВД России им. В.Я. Кикотя. Просмотр фильма осуществляется последовательно по эпизодам. После просмотра части фильма курсантам предлагается выполнить ряд заданий, направленных на отработку определенных грамматических навыков. Задания могут выполняться как в группе, так и в парах и индивидуально. Также данную разработку возможно использовать для организации самостоятельной работы курсантов в процессе внеаудиторной деятельности. Данная разработка является первой частью комплекса “Mastering grammar through multimedia”, который будет создан на основе эпизодов из различных видеофильмов на английском языке и будет направлен на формирование языковой компетенции обучающихся.

Episode 1. Past Tenses. 1. Watch the episode (up to 6.40). Who is talking? What kind of story do you learn? 2. Remember what you know about past tenses. 3. Read the typescript of the episode and fill in the verbs in the correct form.    

 

 

Grandpa! You're not supposed to be up here, looking at that. I just wanted to know. Well, you're old enough, I suppose. You should know the story. OK, here we go. It _____(be) 1832. On a night much like this. Charles Carroll ________(be) the last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence.He ________(be) also a member of a secret society known as the Masons. And he ______(know) he ____________(die). He ___________(wake up) his stable boy in the middle of the night and _____________(order) him to take him to the White House to see Andrew Jackson. Because it _________(be) urgent that he speak to the president. _______he ____________(talk) to him? No. He never ______(get) the chance. The president _________(not be) there that night. When knights from the First Crusade __________(discover) secret vaults beneath the Temple of Solomon. You see. The knights who _______ (find) the vaults ________(believe) that the treasure was too great for any one man - not even a king. They _______(bring) the treasure back to Europe and ___________(take) the name "the Knights Templar." Over the next century they ________(smuggle) it out of Europe and they _________(form) a new brotherhood called the Freemasons. In honor of the builders of the great temple. War _______(follow). By the time of the American Revolution the treasure _________(hide) again. By then the Masons ___________(include) George Washington. Benjamin Franklin. Paul Revere. They

________(know) they had to make sure the treasure never _________(fall) into the hands of the British. So they _________ (devise) a series of clues and maps to its location. Over time the clues were lost or forgotten, until only one _______(remain) - and that _________(be) the secret that Charles Carroll ______(entrust) to young Thomas Gates. Charlotte. "The secret lies with Charlotte."  Who's Charlotte?  Oh... not even Mr. Carroll__________(know) that. 4. Discuss: 1. Do you believe in treasures? 2. Do you know somebody who found a treasure? 3. Would you like to become a treasure-hunter?

Episode 2. Modal verbs. 1. Watch the episode (from 6.40 till 20.00). 2. Answer the questions? 1. Who do you see in this episode? 2. Why are they together? What unites them? 3. What have they found? 3. Read the sentences from the film and find modal verbs. Explain their meaning. 1. Assuming Ben's theory's correct and my tracking model's accurate, we should be getting very close. 2. - But don't go by me -I broke a shoelace this morning. It's... it's a bad omen. - Shall we turn around and go home? Or we could pull over and just throw him out here… 3. -Look... this is a waste of time. How could a ship wind up way out here? -Well, I'm no expert, but...it could be that the hydrothermic properties of this region produce hurricane-force ice storms that cause the ocean to freeze and then melt and then refreeze, resulting in a semisolid migrating land mass that would land a ship right around here. 4. I said it could be here. 6. It's Templar symbols. "The legend writ.""The stain effected.""The key in Silence undetected.""Fifty-five in iron pen." "Mr. Matlack can't offend."

It's a riddle. I need to think. 7. "The stain effected" could refer to a dye or a reagent used to bring about a certain result. 8. A document of that importance would ensure the map's survival. 9. We'll have to arrange a way to examine it. We could borrow it. 10. You should be able to rub this treasure in their arrogant faces, and I want you to have the chance to do that. 11. I'd really need your help here. 12. Well, you can't shoot me. There's more to the riddle. I'm the only one who can figure it out, and you know that. 13. We played poker together, Ian. You know I can't bluff. 14. Tell me what I need to know, Ben, or I'll shoot your friend. 15. You need to know...if Shaw can catch. 4. Discuss: Was Ben right to ask Ian for help? Did he have other possibilities to get to Charlotte? What would you do in his place?

Episode 3. Conditionals. 1. Watch the episode (from 20.00 till 32.10) 2. Study conditional sentences, translate them. 1.However, if we were given the privilege of examining the document...we would be able to tell you for certain if it were actually in any danger. 2. If it's any consolation, you had me convinced. 3. It means, if there's something wrong, those who have the ability to take action have the responsibility to take action. 4. Ian's gonna try and steal it. And if he succeeds, he'll destroy the Declaration. 5. And beneath an inch of bulletproof glass is an army of sensors and heat monitors that will go off if someone gets too close with a high fever. 3. Remember the rules. Fill in the table with your own example: Structure /example

4. Translate the sentences: Если бы Бен и Райли убедили ФБР, им бы не пришлось обращаться к Абигейль. Если Бен представится своим именем, Абигейль не примет его. Если Бен не украдет Декларацию, это сделает Йен. У Бена было бы больше возможностей защитить Декларацию, если бы он согласился украсть ее с Йеном. Райли не помогал бы Бену, если бы он ему не доверял. Если Райли не поможет Бену, он не сможет украсть Декларацию.

5. Discuss with your groupmates: 1. Would you take the same steps, if you were Ben? 2. Does the protection of national treasure justify crime?

Episode 4. Present Tenses. 1. Watch the episode (from 32.10 till 51.30) 2. Read and translate the sentences. Explain the use of tenses. 1."For the woman who has everything else...Thanks for listening. Paul Brown." 2. Our evil plan is working. 3. (Abigail) What are you doing here?- I made a last-minute donation. A big one. 4. You know, I really couldn't accept something like that normally, but... I really want it.

5. I have been wondering, though, what the engraving indicated- on the pipe that Big Foot took. 6. Ben, you're doing great. 7. I don't know where anyone is. I have nothing. 8. I'm taking the whole thing. I'll get it out in the elevator. 9. What are you talking about? 10. Are you trying to steal that? 11. Hey, I don't make the prices. 12. I have $32... - We take Visa. 13. Once we catch them what do we do?- I'm working on it. 14. Why don't you just pass me that document? Then we can all go home. 15. You're still shouting. It's starting to annoy. 3. Revise the use of present tenses with future meaning. What other constructions can be used to express the future. Give you own examples. I'm gonna turn off the surveillance cameras. If she falls, the document falls. 4.Discuss: 1. Why was the theft possible? 2. Whose methods were better: Ben’s or Ian’s? 3. What would you do on Abigaile’s place?

Episode 5. Phrasal verbs. 1. Watch the episode (from 51.30 till 58.10). 2. Read the sentences and find phrasal verbs. Does their meaning differ from the meaning of the original verb? How?  If we all cooperate, we'll get through this with as little frustration as possible.  You know what? I take it back.  Did we get a description from the other guards?- Which guards?- The guards that were fired upon.  So...who was shooting, who were they shooting at, and why weren't they getting along?

 We have a clean-room environment all set up.  We can't go back there.  He tried to walk out with a copy of the Declaration of Independence without paying.  It's only a matter of minutes before the FBI shows up at my front door.  (Ben) You know, get off the road, take a right.  I will let you hold onto this if you'll promise to shut up, please.  You're not going with the Declaration. Yes, I am. I'm not letting it out of my sight, so I'm going.  Look, if you wanted to leave me behind,you shouldn't have told me where you were going.  What in the world did this guy want to be when he grew up? I want to find out who this guy is. 3. Make phrasal verbs from: go keep get 4. Give as many examples of phrasal verbs as you can. 5. Discuss: Why did Abigaile stay with Ben and Riley? How can the police find Ben?

Episode 6. Questions. 1. Watch the episode (from 58.10 till 1.14). 2. Read the dialogues and underline interrogative sentences. (doorbell) -Dad. I'm in a little trouble. - Is she pregnant? - (Ben) Well, if she is, are you gonna leave the woman carrying your grandchild standing out in the cold? - I look pregnant? … -I have a job, a house, health insurance. At least I had your mother, for however brief a time. At least I had you. What do you have? Him? -Look, if you just give us the letters, we're gone. … -Don't you get it, Ben? I finally figured it out. The legend says that the treasure was buried to keep it from the British. But what really happened was the legend was

invented, to keep the British occupied searching for buried treasure. The treasure is a myth. … -Dad, can we have the letters now? -Will somebody please explain to me what these magic numbers are? - It's an Ottendorf cipher. - That's right. -Oh, OK. What's an Ottendorf cipher? - They're just codes.Each of these three numbers corresponds to a word in a key. Usually a random book or a newspaper article. -(Ben) In this case, the Silence Dogood letters. … - Oh, my God. Oh, my God. - I know. -Oh, my God. What have you done? This is... this is the... - I know! - This is the Declaration of Independence. -Yes. And it's very delicate. -You stole it? Dad, I can explain, but I don't have time. … -I think we should change clothes. We look kind of conspicuous, don't you think? -I'd love to go shopping, too, but we have no money. -Here, I took this from his house. He usually tucks a few hundred dollars somewhere between those pages. - Common Sense. How appropriate. … So you get your sense of absolute certainty from him, do you? -Well, I'm sure I don't know what you mean. - Well, you're certain the treasure is real, despite what anyone else thinks. - No, but I hope it's real. I mean, I've dreamt it's real since my grandfather told me about it. … -You don't know this? I-I know something about history that you don't know. -I'd be very excited to learn about it, Riley. Do you actually know who the first person to suggest daylight savings was? - (Ben) Benjamin Franklin. - (Abigail) Benjamin Franklin. … -Can you remember which ones you were gonna tell him next?

-Yeah, here. S-T-O-W. 3. What types of questions do you know. Revise the grammar rules. Find questions of different types in the dialogues above. 4. Ask as many questions as you can to the sentences: The legend says that the treasure was buried to keep it from the British. John Pass and John Stow cast the bell. The artist was actually a friend of Benjamin Franklin's. 5. Discuss: Have you ever tried to decode the cipher? How does modern technology help the police in their work?

Episode 7. Passive voice 1. Watch the episode (from 1.14 till 1.28 ). 2. Study the sentences. What do they have in common?  It could have been seen for miles around.  Eventually, it was moved from its place in Independence Hall steeple and given its own...  It's just that the last time this was here it was being signed.  Like if we get caught and killed?  They're headed for the breezeway on the north side.  Well, it's the same story I tried to tell you guys before the Declaration was stolen.  Dr. Chase was not involved. 3. Revise the rules of Passive voice formation. 4. Transform the sentences above from Passive into Active voice. 5. Translate the sentences into English. 1. Наших героев преследовали люди Йена, чтобы отобрать очки и Декларацию. 2. Колокол Независимости был создан Пассом и Стоу. 3. Несмотря на все уловки, Декларация Независимости захвачена Йеном. 4. Бен арестован и его допрашивает ФБР. 5. Бен был отпущен ФБР, поскольку им угрожал Йен. 6. Discuss:

1. Was Ben’s plan to divide good? Why wasn’t it successful? 2. Were FBI’s actions correct? Episode 8. The –ing forms 1. Watch the episode (from 1.28 till 1.36). 2. Read the sentences and divide them in three columns: part of Continuous form/ Participle 1 /Gerund

1. I hope your agents are all under four feet tall and wearing little scarves. 2. You know, Agent Sadusky, something I've noticed about fishing: It never works out so well for the bait. 3. Sir, we've got some traffic incoming. 4. Looks like a sightseeing helicopter. 5. I got him. He's coming from the north. 6. Well, I'm sure not against you, if that's what you're asking. 7. (Sadusky) What's the devil's going on? 8. Target is moving. He's heading towards the stern. 9. Ask your girlfriend. She's the one calling all the shots now. 10. Hi, sweetie. How's your day going? 11.So, what, you working with Ian now? 12.It turns out helping someone escape from FBI custody is a criminal act. 13.Riley's right here, doing something clever with a computer. 14.I'm tracking you through the GPS in Shaw's phone. 15. And where is that?- Right across the street from where we're hiding. 16.You know the key to running a convincing bluff? 3. Make your own sentences using Participle 1 and the Gerund. 4. Discuss: What door was Ben talking about? Why did he cooperate with Ian again?

Episode 9. Prepositions. Task 1. Watch the episode(from 1.36 till 2.01). Task 2. Translate the sentences into Russian. 1. Well, why don't you ask Dr. Chase and Riley to join us? 2. No, now. Or you can figure out the clues for yourself. 3. A street inside the church? Not inside. Beneath. Beneath the church. 4. I'm still working on it. 5. Careful no one steps in him. All right, put it down. 6. OK. Who wants to go down the creepy tunnel inside the tomb first? 7. … if anyone should come out without me, well... use your imagination. 8. Right, let's go. What are we waiting for? 9. OK, get on the elevator.
