Two-H anded Bastard Sword

This great weapon has been duplicated to the detail of an actual Large Bastard Sword held in private collection. It’s complex cross design is similar to one displayed in a museum in Zurich dated to the time between 1480 -1510. These early weapons were originally carried by the strong and fearless Swiss and Germans, although bastard swords soon became popular in other regions such as the British Isles and Europe. Italian armour was highly prized for superior style and Germany for incredible detailing, it is no wonder that the workshops of the time copied the best features and styles of each other and by the 16th century, Germans had adopted the full rounded outlines of Italian armour while the Italians took note of the decorative designs and characteristics popular with German armour. Utilizing the artistry of both great armour centers these masterly made wearable suits of armour are crafted in the styling tradition of those master craftsmen who created the originals for kings and knights throughout Europe. The “Armour of War” is defined as the type of armour for combat that afforded protection to the vital areas of the body, yet was light weight and comfortable enough as not to tire a knight, nor constrict his freedom of movement in battle. These incredible articulated wearable suits of reproduction War Armour of Milanese design are made in Italy, the renown hub for armour manufacturing during the middle ages. The steel has been treated to create an antiqued rust finish that not only has a look of authenticity but is historical. Armour used in battle was often darkened giving it a rustic aged finish so that it would not “shine” in light, as to keep a knight from becoming a glistening target for the enemy. It also afforded protection for the metal in wet battlefield conditions. This armour is a true site to behold, as it stands about 6-1/2 foot in height on its hardwood base. Fortress Defense... The Stronghold Crossbow The castle or “Stronghold” of the Middle Ages afforded protection during attack. These fortified structures brought refuge to villagers as well as royalty during war. Atop these stronghold walls stood the archers whose bravery and accuracy with a crossbow kept opposing forces from scaling walls. Crossbows were brought to England by the N ormans in 1066 and soon became an important weapon in history. They were used for warfare and for hunting and widely employed in England through the time of Elizabeth. Large crossbows were more powerful than any longbow and unlike their lighter counterparts that were used in the field by armour clad soldiers, these giant crossbows were mainly used in the attack and defense of fortified places such as castles.

Walking down a small foot path thru the mountains in Bavaria we discovered a small workshop with dirt floors hardened from centuries of toil. Inside a lone “Metalschmeide” (metal smith) produces and repairs medieval weaponry for castles in Germany with the same techniques passed from generation to generation for over 500 years. We were enthralled with all that we saw! Unfortunately we were only allowed to purchase a few pieces as this old-time family craftsman does not desire or have the time to produce items in quantity. Since we knew our customers would love to revel in the splendor of owning their own “AuthenticsTM” museum quality medieval weaponry, we had our skilled RittersteelTM craftsmen faithfully reproduce these functional ancient weapons of the Medieval Age and earlier with the same quality and many of the techniques that were used to produce the originals!

A uthenticsTM Flail Own a true museum quality flail with styling based on the actual items found in “digs” under and around the castles of Europe. This is the "original" ancient weapon! Small quantities of metal produced by crude mining techniques of the times were put to effective use by ancient metalsmiths in battle weaponry such as the War Club. Long before swords were popular, this weapon had been widely used throughout ancient cultures during war and was very effective during the ages predating full suit armor. These are Awesome! Two different styles, each hand-crafted with blackened heads. Each head is secured with hand wrought iron on a rectangular shaved blackened and seared wood handle. These halberds have rectangular poles for authenticity. (Rectangular handles afforded a better directional grip than round poles). Each style has a sharp blade to one side with a downward curved spike to the other, and a spear on top. Each measures over 6-1/2 feet high varying slightly due to each being individually made. Largest width across measuring 12 to13 inches wide. At the top of each halberd is a spear measuring over 1 foot long.

Hand-crafted with a blackened flared spear head this weapon will command respect against other spears. Wider flared blades were widely used by our Celtic ancestors for hunting as well as in battle. They were more effective in downing a charging wild boar as the blade created a wider, more lethal wound. It was equally as effective in battle, ripping holes in chainmail and armor.
