Introduction
The Messenger of God, God's prayers and peace be upon him, said to his companion Abd al-Rahman b. Samura: "Oh, Abd al-Rahman, do not seek command. For if you are given it because you asked, you will bear the full responsibility. But if you are given it without asking, God will assist you in it." This saying of the Prophet

He was quite familiar with the Prophet's words and said that he and his colleagues had spent many hours pondering how an Islamically grounded democratic process could function without self-nomination, self-promotion, and other objectionable aspects of democracy in the Western mold. Advancing the names of "observant" and "God-conscious" candidates for election and informing the voters of their qualifications in a neutral fashion seemed to him to be serious structural issues, issues that should be

Modesty and reticence have been as rare in modern Middle Eastern politics as reluctance to seize power without being asked. This gap between religious aphorism and secular political practice prompts a question: how have religious political ideals that have lain unexpressed for generations regained their potency at the end of the twentieth century? As a historian of Islamic history, with as much right and aptitude as any other person to reflect upon and try to reimagine the human past, I maintain that, whether or not they Islamic ideal of the leader as a

province after another led to Baghdad's takeover by rude Iranian

temporal power gone, and their religious authority in question because of the Buyids' adherence to Shi'ite

Only with the Islamic Revolution in Iran in 1979 does a central drama reemerge, the struggle of Muslim activist movements, seeking to recenter society and politics around Islamic values, against dictatorial rulers struggling to maintain control. Back on center stage after centuries of playing only a supporting role, Islam makes claims that thrill millions, and curdle the blood of millions more. And that, more or less, is the view from the center down to today. What, one might ask, is wrong with telling the story this way? No one can deny the glory of the caliphate, the might of the Ottomans, or the transformative impact of modern Europe. Nor, indeed, do I intend to deny these things. This book is intended to complement, not replace, the view from the center. The caliphs and sultans at least some of them deserve their fame. Epic conquests and tragic defeats are too much the stuff of history to be shoved aside. And above all, the story of Muhammad and his early followers has been

The view from the center portrays Islamic history as an outgrowth from a single nucleus, a spreading inkblot labeled "the caliphate." But what other than a political label held Islam together? And w hy did its political cohesion evaporate after little more than two centuries, never to reoccur? The view from the edge holds out the possibility of addressing questions like these. It starts from the fact that most Muslims outside the Arabian peninsula proper are not the descendants of the Arabs who participated in the Islamic conquests. When their ancestors made their confession of faith that there was no God but God, and that Muhammad was the Messenger of God, they did not do so on the basis of personal familiarity with the Prophet's own community in Mecca and Medina, or even on the basis of familiarity with the Quran. Most of them learned about Islam after they entered the community, not before; and what they learned never assumed a homogeneous character, though from the fourteenth century on there was a strong impulse toward normative homogeneity.

For the first two centuries the edge was virtually everywhere. Each locality had its own microhistory of Islam. Each one was a spring; over the centuries, some springs went dry, others were stopped up, and still others were channeled into larger streams. But later scholars and students believed they were, and this belief conferred authority upon both the text and the transmitter. This system of preserving and transmitting religious lore was an believer's
memory tradition. Though many hadith transmitters did commit to memory the texts and the isnads they pronounced in their classes, their students usually wrote down every oral tradition,

But there was also a certain loss, not only of sound traditions that had to be discarded because their isnads had become flawed with the passage of generations, but the loss also of local versions of Islam that had previously been supported by weak traditions transmitted within a specific locality. The student who in the year 1000 had sat at the feet of an elderly hadith reciter in his home or shop and learned what Islam was all about by hearing him intone the words of the Prophet that he had personally collected was succeeded by the student in 1300 who was more likely to be living and studying in a building dedicated to education, a madrasa, and hearing a professor read out loud, with an isnad that went back to its compiler, one of the accepted books of sound traditions. Concomitant with this transition in education was a weakening of the linkage between orality and authority. The Prophet's words still carried ultimate authority in the later Islamic centuries, but they carried authority because they were "true," authoritative collections of

But tens of thousands of hadith came into circulation outside the framework of such narratives, and there is little to indicate that they are merely fragments of what were once sustained narratives or descriptions put together by the people who knew Muhammad personally. They appear most often, rather, to be answers to questions.

My concern here, however, is not with the intricacies of early hadith study, but with what the burgeoning of hadith recitation and collection reveals about the growth of the Muslim community. Just as scholars studying the history of Judaism through an examination of the corpus of rabbinical opinions called responsa have found it valuable to analyze what questions are asked of the rabbis at different times and in different situations for clues about changing community concerns, so it is possible to discover something of the character of the early Islamic community by looking at the sorts of questions the hadith seem to be responding to. Knowing that they were Muslims, and that as Muslims they might hope to share in the immense prestige and wealth of the caliphate, it was vital for them, whether they were Arabs or non-Arab converts, to understand what was expected of them as Muslims. And in the absence of formal instructors or official religious leaders in their own community, they could only find out by observing and asking. Many questions about standard rituals could easily be answered by any observant Muslim. Other questions, however, would be new, either because of new circumstances or because new converts brought with them concerns and questions that the earlier Muslims in their vicinity had not entertained. The likelihood of new questions being posed was presumably greater among non-Arab converts to Islam than among the Arabs themselves. After all, Muhammad and virtually all of the Companions were Arabs who shared a common language, a common culture, and the lifestyle of the cities of the Hijaz. If, for example, it was commonplace for all Arabs to wear gowns and sandals, it would probably not occur to Arab Muslims to ask whether such a costume was appropriate or necessary for Muslims. However, Iranian converts from northeastern Iran, accustomed to boots, baggy trousers, and emboidered coats, might well ask such a question. For them, the underlying issue would be whether dressing like an Arab was a necessary component of dressing like a Muslim. As late as 840, during the inquisition of a Central x\sian prince and commander in the Abbasid army on charges of apostasy, a witness quoted him as saying, "Truly I

If by learning and following a concocted hadith a person did something that was not part of, or even contrary to, Muhammad's practice, but did it with full piety and religious self-assurance, one might say that that person followed a nonstandard practice; but it would be harsh to say that he or she was impious, or a bad Muslim, or an unbeliever. Since it is well known that millions of Muslims today engage in "nonstandard" practices, and it is safe to assume that millions always have, no special onus should be put upon those people who were misled by fabricated hadith in the early centuries. It seems reasonable, therefore, to see the expansion of the corpus of hadith as a natural way for the growing Muslim community to respond to the ever-increasing volume of questions raised by believers. From the point of view of the muhaddithun who eventually undertook to prune the overgrowth of the corpus, those individuals who had concocted or altered hadith, or attached to them erroneous isnads, were culpable and strongly condemned. When Abd Allah found this out, he called upon Isa's son to accept Islam, and he did so, changing his name to Abu Ali al- Hasan and becoming the progenitor of one of Nishapur's most illustrious Muslim families. 8 While on occasion whole villages, tribes, or localized religious communities probably entered Islam en masse, either following the example of their customary leaders, or responding to missionary appeals, 9 the graphs of conversion derived from name data indicate that the overall model of conversion best fits the hypothesis of an immense number of individual choices to identify with the Muslim community. "Haft" is not an Arabic name, but rather the Persian word for "seven." Thus his
