Foreword Professor J N Joshi has evolved the Hydraulic Design Tables existing in literature. His proacademic attitude has incorporated pragmatic, on the field practices. Professor Joshi is an illustration of step by step progress. He started his academic career as an Assistant Lecturer and culminated as Professor of Environmental Engineering , through Public Service Commission selections. He received a Merit Award for ranking first in his M E (Environmental). The booklet is useful to not only students in their project work, but also to practicing engineers and consultants, the focus being overall economy. It includes tables for design of water supply net works and waste water systems. I congratulate Professor J N Joshi for this compilation in the pursuit of excellence. P.P. Preface It gives me great pleasure to present this booklet entitled ‘Most Useful Hydraulic Design Tables for Pipe Lines, Sewers and Drainage lines’ in the hands of my friends of engineering fraternity of all the disciplines working in the field of hydraulics in active service or practicing engineers and consultants. First booklet in this subject was published by the eminent Engineer Late Shri D B Bhatt long back in 1969. It is a standard reference as on today. Then came a second booklet with excellent printing and encompassing new and novel features by an experienced Engineer Shri A G Desai in 2001.But still I felt that there was a need for the values of velocities that are mostly used in real field and to avoid unnecessary small values of units and digits after decimal points. The purpose of this type of booklet , according to me should be to focus attention of designing engineers towards overall economy of the water supply Schemes. It is evident that head lost in overcoming friction is a mere waste of energy and ultimately money. Therefore a new feature is added in this booklet which relates Power to over come friction to transmit certain quantity of water through a distance of one km. Hope this endeavour of mine will be useful to practicing engineers and consultants as well in the field of water supply and sanitary engineering and industrial utilities. The focus on power consumption will lead to awareness of energy conservation as a ‘unit saved is a unit produced’. Looking to this point in view I feel that an exposure of this booklet to Engineering Students will go a long way in future energy conservation drive. Last but not the least I am grateful to my teacher, friend, philosopher and guide Dr P P Oza for being my constant source of inspiration and support and for his kind gesture in writing Foreword of this booklet.
