How to Find a Healthy Home Buying or renting a home is a huge financial decision. Before making this decision, you want to make sure the electromagnetic environment of the home and the surrounding neighborhood is conducive to good health. This guide will help you successfully navigate this decision and hopefully save you time and money while helping you find a healthy home.

Setting the Stage I want to acknowledge upfront that this can be a scary, overwhelming topic for many people. I believe this is the primary reason why most people do not even want to consider the health effects of electromagnetic fields (EMFs). By reading this guide, you have already gotten through the most difficult process, which is realizing that this topic is important for you and your family. Congratulations! And, thank you for taking this journey with me. Throughout this guide, I provide you with a detailed step-by-step process to find a home with lowEMF pollution. It may seem complicated at first, but realize that it gets much easier once you understand the basics. Eventually, you will be able to quickly determine if a home is right for you. I have walked many people through this process and now they have healthy homes in communities where they enjoy living. This process has also worked for my wife and me. We have found incredible homes to live in that have become healing for us. We have discovered the key elements that need to be in place for a home to be healthy. This is vital should you or someone in your family already be sensitized to EMF pollution and for anyone who wants to prevent health issues related to EMFs. I summarize the core elements of this guide later on in the section called “Your Ideal Home”. It is my sincere hope that our experience will help you in finding your next home.

You do not have to live in a cabin in the mountains to find a low-EMF home. 1

Why I created this guide Several clients asked me to create this guide to help them (and you) navigate this complicated realm. When my wife and I became electro-hypersensitive (EHS) in 2011, finding a home became incredibly difficult for us. Granted, it has not been all bad. Our lives the past few years have been filled with travel and adventure, rather than settling down. Because of this, I have gained extensive experience measuring homes for safe levels of EMFs. I have measured and found safe homes in Europe, Indonesia and the United States. Most people look at our lives in amazement. What many do not realize, however, is what we have gone through to find homes where we can actually sleep and live symptom free. It has been a journey of discovery through trial and error that has not been easy. Now, with this guide, my hope is that our experience will make it much easier for you to find your own EMF sanctuary. During the past four years, I have inadvertently become quite experienced in knowing what to look for in a home when it comes to the electromagnetics. I also have the sensitivity to quickly feel when a home is not right. My measurement devices and my engineering background have combined with what has become a sixth sense to help us find safe places to live. I have found that when certain conditions are met, a home can be a very healing place. I know what this looks and feels like and I have measured and personally experienced over 100 homes the past four years to learn what it takes. This guide will give you what I have learned and help you choose a healthy home for you and your family.

Who is this guide for? The short answer is that everyone is affected by electromagnetic field (EMF) pollution. Electromagnetism is life. At the deepest level of biology, your energy is based on how many electrons your mitochondria receive through food, water and the environment. This electron transfer can be disrupted by artificial EMF pollution, which leads to a cascading sequence of biological dysfunction. A current majority of people cannot feel the immediate effects of artificial electromagnetic fields. It is estimated that between 3% and 10% of the population has the ability to sense EMFs consciously and the rest of the population experience them after years of exposure as the development of modern (chronic) health issues. Many people are unaware of the EMF factor and dismiss the topic or even go so far as to call those who can sense EMFs as “crazy” or “tin-foil-hat people.” However, other people’s ignorance does not need to affect the health and safety of you and your family. This issue is a controversial hot spot with more and more data accumulating showing the biological effects of artificial EMFs. At the same time, wireless technology is becoming an even greater factor in our economy. Because of this, the EMF topic is becoming a leading edge of the health movement and is re-shaping how we understand our environment. The most intelligent and forward-thinking people on the planet are now paying close attention to this issue, right along with you. 2

In particular, there are certain people that I especially encourage to pay attention to EMF pollution when choosing a place to call home. This is because electromagnetic fields will typically affect them more than the general population. They include:          

Families with small children – babies and young children are affected by EMFs the most. Couples that want to get pregnant – this can be very difficult in a high-EMF environment. Any family with an autistic child. These children do better in a low-EMF environment. People with Lyme, thyroid conditions, autoimmune issues or heavy metals in their body. Anyone who has had reactions to chemicals or mold in their life (MCS). Those who are considered to be electro-sensitive (ES) or electro-hypersensitive (EHS). Anyone who wants to avoid become EHS because of a toxic home. People who have food allergies or who are in general more sensitive to their environment. Those who have a history of depression or anxiety. EMFs can make these worse. Healthy individuals who want to lead long, healthy lives. The research points to a strong link between EMF pollution and cancer and neurological conditions, such as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Why spend 30 years (or even a few years) in a home that may diminish your health over time?

Who this guide is NOT for I would be remiss in stating that this guide is for everyone who is electro-hypersensitive (EHS). The fact of the matter is that a small percentage of people are so severely EHS / MCS (multiple chemical sensitivity) that the recommendations and techniques in this guide are simply not adequate. The general EMF knowledge provided will benefit you, but this guide is ultimately for families that want to have a healthier home and for moderately ES / EHS people who can still live in relatively populated areas. My purpose is to prevent even more people from becoming severely electro-hypersensitive. If you are severely EHS / MCS, please contact me through my website (or have someone contact me for you). I will provide you with information and put you in touch with engineers who have spent decades learning about and building off-the-grid ultra-low-EMF homes. There are building techniques that will help you and your builder tremendously. However, they are beyond the scope of this guide. There is a way forward for you, but I encourage you to get the very best information possible before starting any project so that you don’t waste your savings and your time. Unfortunately, at this time, very few of the EMF consultants in the United States are truly qualified to help severely EHS / MCS disabled individuals, so please do your research before moving into a home or area that will not meet your needs.

What about the other pollutants? You may be wondering why I focus on EMFs without mentioning chemicals, pesticides, mold, heavy metals, fluoride, air quality and other toxins within a home that can affect your health? I am in no 3

way downplaying the effect that these pollutants can have on our health (I have experienced their effects first hand). However, I want this guide to focus completely on EMFs because I know of few resources that focus only on finding a low EMF home. I also do this because EMF exposure is usually one of the most important factors in your long-term health and the hardest to remedy after the fact (especially if the pollution source is off your property or incredibly expensive to fix). There are many books and resources available to help you reduce your exposure to these other toxins once you find a home. And, obviously, if you smell mold or chemicals, notice a conventional farm down the road that will spray pesticides or just don’t feel well after looking at a home, don’t go back! I encourage you to learn strategies to reduce your in-home toxin exposures. Beth Greer’s book “Super Natural Home” is a good place to start.

Common EMF Symptoms A German medical doctor by the name of Dr. Erwin Schliephake first published an article in 1932 noting that his patients were reacting to a military radio tower that had been installed nearby. Since that time, the condition of electromagnetic sensitivity (ES) or hypersensitivity (EHS) has become a global phenomenon. The Swedish and Norwegian governments officially recognize the condition as a “functional disability”, similar to being blind or in a wheelchair. It should be noted that Sweden was one of the first countries to implement cell phone technology and there are now approximately 250,000 Swedes who are officially EHS. Other countries such as France, Austria and Canada are moving toward recognizing this condition as well. Research points to 3-5% of the global population currently being moderately affected by EMFs. Nearly 30% of the population is slightly affected (without knowing the reason for their symptoms) and may experience one or more of the following symptoms when exposed. At this time, less than 1% of the population is severely affected, which, as I mention above, can be an extremely debilitating condition. This guide is meant to help anyone who is moderately affected by EMFs or wants to remain unaffected. It is important to point out that all people are affected by EMFs, but only some experience immediate symptoms. Here are the most common EMF symptoms that are discussed in published literature:          

Headaches (tension or pressure on sides of head/temples) Insomnia/Sleep Disturbance Tinnitus (the condition is sometimes referred to as “microwave hearing”) Heart Arrhythmia/Palpitations Fatigue Skin Rashes (particularly redness on face/arms) Cognitive Impairment (during and directly after exposure) Vertigo Inner Tension/Agitation Depression 4

A simple way to test if you are affected by EMFs is to visit a low EMF environment (such as nature) for a period of time. Typically, within 24-48 hours of being in a clean environment, your symptoms will begin to diminish and possibly vanish. Severely affected people may take longer, up to a few weeks. Unfortunately, the symptoms typically reappear upon coming back into a high-EMF environment. However, the more time you spend in a good environment, the better your body will be able to handle EMFs. People who live in low EMF homes typically see their level of sensitivity decline and their health improve. My EMF symptoms typically disappear within 24-48 hours of being in a more natural environment. Sometimes just one or two nights of camping on the ground in a mountain forest will leave me with no headache, tinnitus or fatigue. My sleep in such an environment is usually eight solid hours of deep rest. My intention in creating this guide is to help you find a home so that you can sleep well and live symptom free. You can learn much more about the health effects and methods to reduce the symptoms on my website where you can sign up for an EHS guide: www.emfanalysis.com/health-effects/

What exactly are Electromagnetic Fields? There are four types of artificial electromagnetic fields (EMFs) that are important to consider when choosing a home. Later in this document I will guide you in measuring each of them. Magnetic Fields: Magnetic fields occur when there is electrical current running through a wire or appliance. If we make an analogy with water, it’s like water running through pipes. If the faucet is not open, then there is no water current flowing through the pipe. Likewise, if nothing is plugged-in and using electricity, then there is no electrical current and typically no magnetic fields. It is rare to have high magnetic fields in a home, but it happens. They usually occur through a wiring error or from a major power line outside the home. I list magnetic fields first because they are also the most dangerous to biology. Here is a video by Karl Riley, an expert on finding and fixing magnetic fields within homes. You will measure magnetic fields with a Gauss meter. Electric Fields: These fields are created by voltage within electrical wiring. To keep with the water analogy, voltage is like the water pressure in pipes. The higher the water pressure, the more force the water will have when it comes out. The higher the voltage, the higher the electric fields. Electric fields can typically be alleviated by turning off the circuit breakers to a part of the home (no more electrical force available) and by using shielded electrical wiring (MC cable rather than the standard Romex). Older homes tend to have higher electric fields because the wiring from decades ago is not shielded at all. It is very important for people to sleep in environments with low electric fields (sleep is typically diminished by high electrical fields). I outline the safe levels later in this guide. You can identify electric fields either through the body voltage method or with a digital AC electric field meter. 5

Microwave Radiation / RF (Radio-Frequency Radiation): All modern wireless technology now uses pulse-modulated microwave radiation (also known as radio-frequency radiation – RF). Unlike the analog radio towers that we all grew up with, this new digital technology is especially damaging to our biology. We simply do not know all the ways how the modulated frequencies affect the cells in our body and it could be decades until this is known. Common devices that use this type of artificial EMF are smart phones, cell phone towers, cordless phones, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, iPads, Wi-Fi enabled computers/tablets, wireless baby monitors and wireless smart meters. You will measure microwave radiation with an RF meter. Dirty Electricity: Dimmer switches, fluorescent & LED bulbs, solar panel inverters, and new electronic items like state of the art televisions create harmonics or “dirty electricity” on the electrical wiring of your home. These harmonics conduct along the copper wiring in the walls of your home and then radiate into your living environment. This essentially creates an incoherent and biologically damaging form of radio-frequency radiation in the air of your home (a form of static electricity). Homes with high amounts of dirty electricity can feel like they have a distinct buzz and often have inhabitants that have frequent headaches and fatigue. You can measure dirty electricity with an AM radio or the Stetzer and Line Noise EMI meters listed below.

You can find much more about how the four types of EMF pollution affect biology here: www.emfanalysis.com/research/

I also encourage you to read my article on DE that has solutions and videos to help you remedy DE: http://www.emfanalysis.com/what-is-dirty-electricity/ 6

What are Safe EMF Levels? Toward the end of this guide I will walk you through the different measurement devices that I recommend should you decide to measure your own home rather than hire an EMF consultant. However, before we get into the process of researching and measuring a prospective home, I want to discuss the readings that you will encounter and what readings are typically considered to be safe. First, know that government regulations and the safe levels proclaimed by utility and telecommunications companies are completely obsolete. For their own economic interest, they are ignoring considerable science and evidence that shows that much lower EMF levels are necessary to have a healthy home. The reason for this is that government regulations are based on the idea that “if an EMF source does not heat you, then it can’t harm you.” Science now shows this to be completely false, but our economy is based upon it being true. This is why it is important that you protect your family while political, economic and technological solutions are determined in the coming years and decades. This is the wisest thing we can do at this time. I am going to outline two sets of readings – one for a typical healthy family (Typical Safe) and one for a family with someone whose health is compromised in one of the ways I mention above (Sensitive Safe). If you have a family member with Lyme, autism or whom is already sensitized to EMF pollution, then you want to pay attention to the lower levels. Please note that these are general guidelines. You may find that you need even lower EMF levels or that you can handle much higher levels. Every person is different, but these are the levels I recommend based on my research, personal experience and work with many different people.

Magnetic Fields: Typical Safe: 1 - 2 milliGauss (mG) in living areas of home. Sensitive Safe: 0.1 mG in sleeping area with electrical breakers off. Electric Fields: Typical Safe: 0.1 – 1.0 Volts (V). Preferably below 0.500 V in sleeping area. Sensitive Safe: 0.01 – 0.1 V with breakers off. Below 0.1 V in sleeping area. Microwave Radiation (RF): Typical Safe: Below 100 microwatts per meter squared (uW/m^2) in home. Sensitive Safe: 1 – 5 uW/m^2. Preferably below 1.0 uW/m^2 in sleeping area. 7

Dirty Electricity: Typical Safe: Below 200 Graham-Stetzer units or below 240 mV Sensitive Safe: Below 50 Graham-Stetzer units or below 60 mV

Determining if a home is right for you Let’s move onto the task at hand. There are three phases to determining if a home is right for you:   

Phase One – Online Research Phase Two – Initial Visit to Property Phase Three – Measuring Inside the Home

The primary purpose of this guide is to save you time and money in the process of finding a healthy home. I recommend that you go through these steps in order because the further you get through this process, the more time and resources you will have spent. It is much better to eliminate a home early on than to find out that you have a major electromagnetic issue affecting your home after you have hired all the home inspectors/engineers, or worse yet, after you have purchased it! Please note that I have made this guide as comprehensive as possible so that you have all the information available to you. However, as we all learn in life, it doesn’t have to be perfect. If you find a home that you like that has “really good” electromagnetics, then this may be the place for you. There are certain issues that are external to your home and cannot be remedied such as a nearby cell tower, a major power line or neighbors with powerful transmitters in their home. Walk away from these properties. However, if the majority of the issues are within your home/property, you can usually remediate these with some added expense. You will find what works for you as you learn about this subject and finding a healthy home will not only be highly likely, but you will wonder why more people do not go through the same process.

Phase One - Online Research: There is a lot you can do from your own computer before even taking the time to drive to a home and meet with a realtor. This step can save you an immense amount of time and, in hypercompetitive housing markets, can help you narrow your search so you know where to put your resources of time and money. Here is what I do: 1.) Put the prospective property address into www.antennasearch.com. In today’s urban environment, you are going to find there are dozens of cell towers within a few miles. However, many can be shielded or are far enough away to cause little worry. The thing you want to make sure of is that there is not a major tower within 3-4 blocks or that is line-of-

8

site to your home. Note that this website does not have every new tower listed, so I outline in Phase Two how to locate new towers that could be in your new neighborhood. 2.) Is there a school, church or hospital within a few blocks? These have a high likelihood of either having a cell tower presently or in the near future. It used to benefit to families to live near schools. However, wise parents today realize that many schools seem to think $30,000 per year in cellular antenna rental fees is worth sacrificing the health of their students and the community. 3.) Is the neighborhood densely populated? In recent years, with the advent of wireless smart meters and Comcast’s new powerful Xfinity Wi-Fi systems, an apartment building or a home with close neighbors is not something I recommend. It is ideal to have your sleeping area at least 50 feet from a nearby smart meter or Wi-Fi router. Some distance from neighbors will also help you in case a neighbor is resistant to swapping out their cordless DECT phone, WiFi or wireless smart meter. 4.) Using Google Maps, see if there are major electrical transmission lines nearby. You can see the major lines that transmit electricity on these satellite maps (they typically have all the trees cut down and no houses are located directly underneath them). I would not live within 1,000 feet of these (approximately ¼ mile). It’s not just the magnetic fields that these lines emit (which drop off to zero after a few hundred feet). Return current will try to find the easiest path to these lines. This is sometimes through the ground, which can make some nearby houses have high electric fields flowing through them. Most electricity is also dirty (polluted with harmonics), so if you live near these big power lines you will be exposed to these harmonic frequencies that are on the electrical lines. 5.) Related to the previous point, try not to live next to a utility substation. Electricity will return to this substation via the overhead electrical wires AND the ground. If you live next to a substation, there is a high likelihood that there is electrical current flowing through the ground that your house sits on. In some neighborhoods, this has caused immense health damage. Luckily, most neighborhoods do not have a substation. However, the following is an excellent expose on what can happen to a neighborhood that has one: http://www.truth-out.org/news/item/24894-desert-rose-and-the-story-of-stray-currents 6.) I encourage people who are sensitive to EMFs to live in protected valleys that are not densely populated (for example, large suburban lots in the East Bay Hills between Berkeley and Walnut Creek are ideal in the San Francisco Bay Area). Even a small valley along a hill will provide a lot of protection from most sources of RF pollution. Earth, concrete, salt water and vegetation are excellent insulation from microwave radiation.

9

7.) The truth is that wealthier neighborhoods often have lower EMF pollution. I have seen this over and over again in the San Francisco Bay Area. It seems that wealthier/educated people can keep their neighborhoods free of antennas as they can readily afford the attorneys necessary to resist or block tower placement. It just takes one committed property owner to stop a proposed cell tower in its tracks. As some studies show, one cell tower can lower property values in a neighborhood by 20% (in addition to or because of the health effects), there is good reason for their concern. You want to use this to your advantage and either purchase the least expensive home in a wealthy area or rent an in-law unit in a wealthy, lessdensely populated neighborhood. I am writing this guide from an in-law unit in an upscale area of Russian Hill in San Francisco. Even though this area is densely populated and San Francisco has high EMF levels, this property is built into the face of Russian Hill directly above Fisherman’s Wharf. The hill provides excellent protection (and a beautiful view of the Bay and the island of Alcatraz), as does all the vegetation/trees in our backyard (the Parrots of Telegraph Hill visit us every day). We are also surrounded by very expensive homes that are well-spaced and provide added protection. It is not often that I feel well in a home in San Francisco, but this one is better than most I have tried the past four years. It shows that one can even live in a city like San Francisco with little EMF exposure. 8.) Suburban or wealthy urban neighborhoods often have better quality electrical wiring. There have been improvements made because the local residents demand it from the utilities. These improvements make the quality of the electricity better (less dirty and less magnetic fields). With the advent of the smart grid, I believe that newer home and electrical grid wiring is better able to handle the harmonics created by smart meter pulses and all the other devices attached to the electrical grid. In more rural areas – where the electrical grid equipment is older and substandard – I experience electrical sensitivity problems much more often. Ironically, I feel better in parts of San Francisco than I do in a beautiful rural area like Occidental, California (2 hours north of San Francisco) that one would think has little EMF pollution. 9.) Check Google Maps to see if there are solar panels installed on the top of your prospective home. There are serious health issues with having rooftop solar installations. I would even consider not living next to a neighbor with a large rooftop solar installation. Solar inverters (attached to the side of solar installed homes) change the DC electrical current generated by the solar panels to the AC electricity a home uses. This process creates high amounts of harmonics or “dirty electricity” that travel through the electrical wiring of a home and back to the unshielded solar panels. These harmonics are not healthy and I would encourage you to not live with the panels on your roof or with an inverter on the side of your house where you spend a lot of time. You can see an image of the dirty electricity harmonics at the end of this guide.

10

10.) How old is the prospective home or neighborhood? Typically, the older a home, the more problems its electrical wiring will have. Some really old homes will have “knob-andtube” wiring that must be completely replaced. Even homes that are only 20-30 years old will have wiring that is not to the standards that I recommend (it is likely not shielded or installed properly). You can always replace the wiring (it may cost $30K to $50K), but pay particular attention to this if you are renting where you have no control over this. There have been thousands (if not more) smart meter fires on older homes. The older wiring simply cannot handle the new devices. Note that I have stayed in an apartment in downtown Vienna (an area with high levels of ambient EMF pollution) and slept like a baby because the apartment was brand new (excellent wiring standards). The construction was also concrete, which is much better than wood at reducing microwave radiation and electric fields. This newly constructed flat was like an EMF-free bunker and I felt great inside of it.

The following are pictures I have taken that will help you know what to look for as you find a healthy home:

Not all cell towers are this obvious. This is one of the many cell towers sprouting up around Bali. The Third World is actually filled with cell towers as they have bypassed the more expensive hard-wiring of their societies. Thus, moving to some tropical island is not as healthy as one would expect. The good thing about these areas is that they have older technology and usually lack wireless smart meters. However, I would expect them to catch up in the next 5-10 years and these areas will be the last places to care about the health of citizens over the profits of entrenched companies. Environmental and health movements in these countries are nearly non-existent.

11

These homes near Santa Rosa, California have quite a few major issues. They are under large power transmission lines that also have cell phone transmitters (white boxes at top of left tower) and smart grid wireless infrastructure (white boxes half way up left tower). A perfect trifecta, so to speak. This is a neighborhood that you could see from Google Maps is not one on which to waste your time.

12

The St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Berkeley, California is trying to get AT&T to put a new 4G cell tower in its steeple. The church will earn nearly $40,000 per year in rental fees, but an organized neighborhood has stopped them for now. Unless you have an RF meter or have heard through the grapevine, you may not know a cell antenna is nearby until you felt the symptoms. As I mention above, I would no longer live near a church or school for this reason. Some studies show that property values can drop up to 20% directly next to cell phone towers.

Image via: City of Berkeley If hiding a cell tower in a church steeple is not bad enough, now wireless companies are purposely remodeling the facades of buildings in order to hide the antennas. The above image is from a recent proposal to install a new 4G cell tower in Berkeley, California. From reading the engineer’s report, a person on the street below may be subject to exposures of 280,000 uW/m^2. This is just 3% of the FCC maximum exposures, so at least they won’t be burned. However, biologists who study this issue recommend maximum exposure levels of 1,000 uW/m^2. For EMF sensitized people, exposures over 100 uW/m^2 (even 10 uW/m^2 in some cases) may cause symptoms within a short period of time. Many people who live near these types of towers may become electro-hypersensitive after several months or years of exposure. The increasing likelihood of a cell tower being hidden from view is why it is important for you to do your online research and to bring a good RF meter with you when you visit a property. It can take some detective work, but it is well worth it.

13

Phase Two – Initial Visit to Property: This is the most important part. You can typically remediate the inside of your home once you purchase or rent it. However, if you have high sources of EMF pollution outside of your property, then even the most expensive remediation techniques may not make your home a healthy place to live. This is why it is so important to measure the surrounding area around your prospective new home. Here is what to do when you arrive at a property: 1.) Get out and walk up and down the street. I mention below what meters you should have with you, but you want to initially check for microwave radiation and magnetic fields. There may be cell antennas or high-tension power lines overhead that you could not locate online. Take a good ½ hour to walk around and see what is in the neighborhood. As you visit different homes, you will begin to realize that some neighborhoods are just better than others with regards to this stuff. 2.) With your magnetic field Gauss meter, walk down the street to see if any of the overhead lines are creating a field that is too high. A/C magnetic fields are the most dangerous (especially to children) and many studies back this up. I would like to the see the ambient field outside the home below 1.0 milliGauss (mG). Even better is at 0.1 mG (what you would find in nature). If the field is above 1.0 mG, then you want to check to see if the field permeates into the home (more on this below). If this is the case, then I would not purchase this property as you cannot remediate this. 3.) Also check to see if there are any electrical transformers on the poles near the prospective home (See white boxes on telephone pole in picture below). These transformers do not emit big electric or magnetic field themselves (the fields diminish within 10-20 feet). However, because they step up the electrical current within the lines, they may create higher magnetic fields on the lines going away from the transformer. These magnetic fields may affect your home if you are on the wrong side of the transformer. You will need to check for this with your Gauss meter, which I explain in the measurements section. 4.) With your RF meter, check to see if there are any major sources of microwave radiation nearby. Verizon, AT&T and major cities like San Francisco have recently begun to put smaller cell phone and WiFi antennas on power poles. These are part of the Distributed Antenna System (DAS) and make it so that some homes now have antennas 10 feet outside their bedroom window (see pictures below). The new antennas typically look like brown or cream color sewing thimbles that are about two feet high. They rest right on top of utility poles and can be installed here with no public notice because this is a “utility easement”. Obviously, if you find one of these nearby, you can move on to another property. Here is San Francisco’s recently released fact sheet on their proposed WiFi DAS system: http://tinyurl.com/nz46wvv 14

5.) Pay attention to high sources of RF emissions that are far away. Some powerful Military/Doppler radar installations emit powerful signals that will be affecting residences up to 30 miles away. If you have a beautiful view of Mt. Tam in the Bay Area, then you are being radiated every 12 seconds. 6.) With your RF meter, check the neighboring homes for high sources of microwave radiation (cordless DECT phones, Xfinity (Comcast) or AT&T Wi-Fi, wireless baby monitors, smart meters, etc.). With the right approach and education, most neighbors will decrease their emissions or move offending sources to the other side of their home. However, you don’t want to move in next to a Ham radio operator who has a powerful transmitter on their roof and will buy you a tin-foil hat for a housewarming gift! 7.) Wireless smart meters, typically on the side of a home, are a particular problem. I advise that people do not spend a lot of time within about 50 feet of one – especially while sleeping. Every few seconds they are emitting high-intensity pulses of microwave radiation that are particularly bad for human biology. You can “opt-out” of your own smart meter in most localities by calling the utility. Ideally you can also encourage your new neighbors to do the same thing or to purchase a short-term solution such as a Smart Meter Shield (see www.emfanalysis.com/products). I encourage you to only use an electro-mechanical analog meter (see pictures below). Most electrical systems are made for these older style meters, so there will be less risk of fire. They are also far safer and there are no privacy issues. 8.) Look for solar panels on the roof of the prospective home. As I mention above in Phase One, rooftop solar installations create electromagnetic problems within a home and I would typically not recommend such a home. Solar may be perceived as an environmental savior and the answer to global warming, but it also creates unhealthy homes. I suspect a greater energy transformation is in the works that will completely change the nature of electricity production/distribution to a small-scale, distributed model. You can see a picture of a solar inverter below. 9.) I encourage you to be bold. Don’t worry what people think when you pull out your EMF meters! Freak out the realtors. Walk on people’s lawns (until they ask you to leave). Do whatever it takes to determine if this is the right neighborhood for you. Your health is your most important asset and you do not want to feel shy when it comes to this topic. It will also save you time and money by being upfront with this and your confidence will inspire interest! You may even find that some of your potential neighbors are friendly to this topic. If so, then you may have found your new home. A community that bands together on reducing artificial electromagnetic pollution is exactly where you want to live. I have made incredible friends walking down the street with my big green RF meter. Some people are scared of it, but the really interested (and interesting) people walk right up to me and start asking questions. I have made fast friends this way. 15

10.) If you can strike up a conversation with the neighbors (or the selling realtor), ask if they know what the health was of the people who lived previously in the home you are looking at. This is one of the most tell-tale signs of how healthy a home is. If the previous owners lived long, productive, healthy lives, then this home is likely a keeper. If they were often sick, always fighting, or if someone in the home experienced a serious illness, then you need to be very cautious about the home and really pay attention to the measurements that you will make in Phase Three.

The following images will help clarify the Phase Two steps for you. These pictures include most of the EMF sources you will encounter in your home search.

This above picture of a million dollar flat in the Russian Hill neighborhood of San Francisco is an example of where you do not want to live. It has the white electrical transformers to the left of the bedroom (too close for comfort) and this is an older building that likely has dangerous knob-andtube electrical wiring (creates high magnetic and electric fields throughout the home). It now also has a DAS cell tower antenna placed on top of the utility pole in front of the building (brown thimble top right on the power pole). These small cell towers are being placed every few blocks in many urban areas. A few go up every week in San Francisco. The 24/7 levels of microwave radiation in this apartment are likely much higher than what is now considered to be safe by biologists who study EMF health effects. 16

The dark box on the electrical pole above is an electrical transformer. These create magnetic and electric fields that can be measured from 10-20 feet from the transformer. However, they also create higher magnetic fields along the lines going in one direction from the transformer (due to changes in current they produce). It’s a good idea to measure the ambient magnetic fields by walking below the lines that emanate from these transformers to see if any of the fields are affecting your prospective home.

17

The above picture is another DAS antenna. It’s the cream color thimble on top of the street light. It’s only about 10 feet from someone’s bedroom (the regulations state it must be at least 6 feet away from a home). They are lower power than normal cell antennas, but you still don’t want to be within 1-2 blocks or line-of-site from one. These antennas are popping up all over major cities and suburban neighborhoods, so be on aware of these as you look for your next home.

Another DAS antenna in the Mission District of San Francisco. Someone’s bedroom is 12 feet away. These homeowners undoubtedly live with very high RF exposures. There are now over 600 of these antennas in San Francisco. Every few blocks, someone has one of these antennas outside their window. Communities all around the country are moving to install DAS antennas every few blocks rather than installing high powered roof-top antennas (like the one directly below). The DAS antennas appear to have fewer regulatory hurdles to clear because they are placed upon existing utility or city infrastructure, rather than a private dwelling. Fewer permits and less community interaction are needed (for now).

18

The above picture shows what a typical building mounted cell antenna looks like. As I mentioned above, most wireless companies are beginning to hide the antennas better, so they may not be this obvious in your neighborhood. Whoever lives in the apartment next to these antennas is being exposed to very high levels of microwave radiation. Obviously, if you see one of these near a property you are interested in, it’s best to move on.

Image via: City of San Francisco If the DAS cellular antennas were not enough (mostly used to increase smart phone service bandwidth), cities such as San Francisco are now implementing city-wide WiFi by installing their own antennas on streetlights and lamp poles. Notice what the new antennas looks like in the picture 19

above (right). San Francisco plans to install over 400 of these new antennas. You can learn more about their proposed plan here. I encourage you to speak out about these programs in your community.

If you look closely at this telephone pole in San Francisco, you will see that the top five feet are a 4G cell antenna. This design blends in more than the thimble type antennas seen above. When I measured this antenna, the RF readings were very high. Many cities will start to install antennas like these in the coming years, so if possible, try not to have a telephone pole outside your home.

20

The building above has two issues that you can see right away. There are the two cell antennas above the window. Not only are the RF levels in this building likely high, there must be considerable electrical current feeding the cell antennas. This will create magnetic, electric and dirty electricity fields in the home. Also, if you look closely in the upper left corner, the white boxes are extra WiFi antennas that a private company has installed. You don’t want either of these antennas pointed at your home.

21

The little sticks to the right of the light pole above are Smart Grid relays. They are very powerful RF antennas that collect all the data from individual smart meters and send it back to the utility. With an RF meter, you can easily tell if one of these is near where you want to live.

Public perception is that the overhead electrical lines seen in the photo above are the main form of electromagnetic pollution to be concerned about. This is actually false. The misperception is likely 22

because the lines are something that people can actually see. There are indeed instances where these lines are installed improperly and create high magnetic fields that can permeate into the nearby housing. However, in most instances, the fields diminish within a few feet of the wires and are of little danger to the local residents. The only way to know for sure is to measure the magnetic fields on the street and within the home with a high quality Gauss meter. Your meters will help you determine if this area is safe for you.

What is different about this San Francisco street? Of course, the utilities are buried. Europe does this a lot more than the United States (it also costs 10X more to do this). I like this scenario slightly more in an urban or suburban environment because most of the EMF pollution sources are buried and there are fewer telephone and utility poles for a wireless company to install a transmitter on. Streets like this are rare, but generally have less potential EMF pollution if you can find one.

23

I share this picture because these boxes are going up everywhere where Comcast provides internet and cable service. This one is in Russian Hill in San Francisco. The boxes themselves are not a big issue. I did not detect any RF being emitted from the boxes (the smart meter below each box does pulse similarly to every other smart meter). However, the issue with having Comcast in your neighborhood is that they are now using every home WiFi modem as a high-powered public hot spot for internet service. This means that if the neighborhood is densely populated, the microwave exposure of the residents will now be much higher. I explain possible solutions to this Comcast issue in this article: http://www.emfanalysis.com/why-is-xfinity-wifi-harming-people/ 24

The above photo is what a solar system inverter looks like. It is attached to solar panels on the roof and the wireless smart meter to the left. As I mention above, solar inverters create high amounts of dirty electricity and large magnetic fields. Ideally, your home and your adjacent neighbors do not have systems such as these.

Wireless “Smart” Meter (Harmful)

Here is a video where I demonstrate what the RF pulses from a smart meter actually sound like.

Phase Three – Measuring Inside the Home: If a potential home has made it through Phase One and Two, then you are very close to crossing the finish line! Here is what you want to do during an open house or private viewing. 1.) Pull out your meters! Again, don’t be shy to get out your meters because of the looks you will get from others. Get over it. It does not matter if you are renting a home for $800 per month or buying a home for $3.5 million, the electromagnetics are one of the most important (and overlooked) aspects of the home and you need to make sure the situation is right for you and your family. 2.) As I mention above, you are going to be checking for 4 types of EMF’s in the home (magnetic, electric, microwave and dirty electricity). I explain how to measure each of these in the next chapter. 3.) Initially go around the house and check for RF sources within the home (Wi-Fi routers or cordless phones) that, oddly, might be on during an open house. Unplug these and any other transmitters you may find. Note that if there are a lot of people at the open house, then your RF meter will likely be picking up their cell phones. You can get around this by showing up early or later to the open house or arranging for a private showing. You will also learn how to distinguish between cell phones and more important RF sources as you become familiar with the meters. 4.) If every possible RF transmitter in the home is off (other than the smart meter, which you can’t turn off), see what your highest RF levels are. Whatever readings you are getting are coming from outside of the home. Are they within the safe limits outlined above? If not, are they something that can be shielded either with RF blocking paint or a RF blocking bed canopy? Be sure to make note of the RF measurements in the bedrooms. This is the most important area to have low levels. 5.) Now move on to magnetic fields. As I mention above, magnetic fields are the most important because they are the most damaging. Walk around the home to see what the ambient levels of magnetic fields are. Pay particular attention what the readings are where you and your children sleep. Are the readings within the limits outlined above with the electricity on? 6.) I want you to then find the circuit breaker box and turn the electricity off to the entire home (perhaps after warning the realtor that you are doing this). With the electricity off to the entire home, did your magnetic field readings go way down? Check in the bedrooms. Ideally, they will drop to 0.1 mG. If they didn’t, that means that you have a magnetic field that is coming from outside the home (likely an incorrectly wired electrical transmission line on the street). If it goes all the way down to 0.1 mG, then you will have control of the magnetic 26

fields in your home via the circuit breaker. You can also re-wire the house or specific rooms to bring them down permanently. 7.) If the magnetic field readings dropped considerably with the electricity off, then it’s both good news and bad news. The good news is it’s fixable. The bad news is you have to fix it. This means that the home has a wiring error or that the entire electrical system needs to be updated/replaced. This could cost between a few thousand dollars (if a minor fix like an improper ground) and $50K to have everything redone. If you have high magnetic fields in the home (over 1 mG when you are in the middle of a room), then I recommend that you hire a good electrician who understands electromagnetic fields to come look at the house. 8.) The last two pieces are the electric fields and dirty electricity. Note that if you are going to re-wire the home because of magnetic fields, then the electric fields and dirty electricity will go down as well. A properly re-wired home should have excellent electromagnetics. 9.) Then pull out your body voltage meter, which will detect any high electric fields. The most important places to check are the sleeping areas. You will need a proper ground (either the electrical socket – provided it is properly grounded or an extension wire going outside to ground that has not been disturbed by construction). I explain both of these below. Then check what the body voltage is when you are where the bed will be. If you turn off the electrical breaker, does it go below the safe limits outlined above? Generally, with the electrical breakers off, the body voltage measurements should go to below 100 milliVolts (mV). If the electric fields are over 1,000 mV (1 Volt) with the electricity on, then your wiring is likely old and unshielded. You can either look at rewiring the part of the where you sleep with MC cable or simply turn off the breakers to where you sleep at night. 10.) The final piece of measuring within your home is dirty electricity (DE). This is typically done with a Graham-Stetzer meter or a Line Noise EMI Meter. You will simply plug the meter into the electrical outlets throughout the home to get a sense if there are major issues. If the home has dimmer switches, fluorescent lighting, switch mode power supplies, faulty wiring or a solar system inverter, then the readings may be quite high. Some of these things can be easily remedied. Alternatively, the DE could be coming from the grid – possibly from a neighbor that has solar installed. There are also filters that help reduce these dirty electricity harmonics. However, they reduce only certain frequencies and their long-term efficacy is in question (they help some people and make things worse for other people). The filters are from Greenwave and Stetzer. If you want to try the filters, I suggest you get just a few to begin with, rather than spend a lot of money for a solution that may not work for you. The best option is to have low DE readings because you have removed the offending sources mentioned above within your home and your home wiring is of excellent quality. (Note: These meters measure most of the dirty electricity you will encounter. For the average person this is good enough. However, if you are highly sensitive, I recommend hiring a 27

professional with a spectrum analyzer. You can always contact me to find someone good in your area.) The AM radio I mention below (Meter #4) will also help you detect dirty electricity. The change in static when you walk in and out of a home is actually from the dirty electricity harmonics on the home wiring that is radiating into the airspace in the home. If there is an extreme change in the tone of the static, then you know the home has dirty electricity and wiring issues.

Some realtors may try to use the whole “Smart Home” bit as a selling point. Do not fall for this. This means the home is filled with pulsed digital microwave radiation. This technology was developed to detect things like cracks in oil pipelines traversing the Alaskan tundra or make a shipyard operate more efficiently. That is a great use of wireless technology. However, it is not wise to put this in your kitchen or near your body! The cumulative pulses of microwave radiation from all the “connected” devices in your home will be nearly one million pulses per day. You can undo these systems, but it can be costly. It is best to start with a home that is wired properly and does not have a lot of wireless appliances built into it. Note that the above image does not include the new Nest Thermostats, Xfinity Wi-Fi and Sonos Speaker Systems that transmit at 5.0 GHz. It only includes things that will communicate with a wireless smart meter. (This image was provided for use in this guide by the film about smart meters called “Take Back Your Power”.)

Your Ideal Home There is so much that goes into choosing the right home. There is the look, feel, construction quality, price, location, investment potential, school district, neighborhood and so much more. The EMF 28

piece is only one aspect. However, as I allude to above, the EMF piece is perhaps the most important aspect related to your health and it is something that you have control over if you take the appropriate steps before purchasing a home. I have outlined the detailed steps to take above. However, to simplify this process, here are the most important EMF aspects that you will see in an ideal healthy home. If you can make sure these are covered, then you will have found an excellent home.

Magnetic field readings are below 1.0 mG with the electricity on and near 0.1 mG in your sleeping areas with the electrical breakers turned off. These low readings with the electricity off are particularly important in the bedrooms if you have someone in your family who is sensitive to EMF’s or has any type of chronic illness. If you get these low readings with the electricity off, this means you have no outside sources like nearby power lines or major wiring errors.

Microwave radiation levels from nearby cell towers are low (less than 5 uW/m^2 for sensitive people and below 100 uW/m^2 for others). If the levels are higher, then you can always get an EMF Bed Canopy to sleep under that will bring the RF levels to below 1 uW/m^2, which is what I recommend for anyone sensitive to EMF’s while they sleep. If you want a less intrusive method, you can paint the walls with Y-Shield and get shielded curtains/window film. Note that Y-Shield can be an issue with people with chemical sensitivities.

The home has good quality, shielded wiring that was properly installed within the last decade. If this is not the case, you can always spend the money to rewire the home and use shielded wiring like MC cable. This will typically reduce the magnetic and electric fields and the dirty electricity component within the home. If you do this and don’t live next to a major cell tower, your home should be healthy from an EMF perspective.

You have found a good neighborhood with some neighbors that are aware of the dangers of EMF pollution. Ideally, the neighborhood has some natural protection like trees, vegetation, hills, small valleys and enough distance between homes such that a neighbor’s home wireless technology is of little concern to you.

29

A home like this might be ideal, provided the EMF meters and measurments you will learn about in the next section check out. What does your ideal home look like? 

The home is in a community where you can opt-out of the wireless smart meter program and you have neighbors who are also willing to opt-out if asked. It is best not to sleep within 50 feet of a smart meter. I know one woman in Santa Rosa, CA that got 150 of her neighbors to opt-out. This allowed her to continue living in her home and she now lives in a veritable EMF oasis!

As mentioned above, the home is not already set up for the “Smart Home” systems. I have had clients around the country who have become ill because of these systems. “Smart Appliances”, Sonos Speakers and Wireless Lighting Systems will increase the microwave exposure exponentially for families.

The home does not too many items such as fluorescent lighting, dimmer switches and wiring errors that can increase dirty electricity. Luckily, much of this can be fixed.

There is not a solar system installed on the rooftop or on your neighbor’s rooftop (you will share the same dirty electricity). Please contact me if you would like information on how to install solar with the least amount of EMF pollution and reduce the dirty electricity caused by systems that have already been installed.

30

Here is an example of a roof-top solar system:

Solar technology has many environmental and political benefits. However, there are considerable health costs if it is not installed properly. Unfortunately, most solar installers are not aware of the potential downsides. The inverter that converts the DC electricity generated by the solar panels to the AC that your home uses creates a high amount of harmonics or dirty electricity. These harmonics then conduct along the electrical wiring in your home and radiate into the living spaces. More importantly though, the harmonics conduct back to the solar panels and the wiring attached to them. The panels and associated wiring are often not properly shielded, so the harmonics radiate directly into the living environment near the panels, the solar panel wiring and the inverter. These harmonics also travel along all electrical wiring in the home (and the neighboring homes). Unfortunately, most inverters and panels are near living environments and give some homes a distinctive “buzz” that some people can feel. Everyone in the home is affected by this on a biological level, whether they feel it or not. The ideal situation is to have the panels and inverter away from the house or primary living areas. There are also ways to reduce these harmonics with whole house filters, but they can be expensive.

How to Measure Electromagnetic Fields Now that you know what you are looking for in a home (and what you do not want), I want to walk you through the process of measuring the different types of electromagnetic pollution. You will utilize this in Phases Two and Three above. There are three routes you can take to accomplish this – depending on your resources and technical ability:   

Hire an EMF Consultant to analyze potential home(s). Purchase a basic EMF meter package. Own an advanced EMF meter package that is very sensitive/accurate.

The following is what you can expect from each of these scenarios:

1. Hire an EMF Consultant: In a growing number of urban/suburban areas, there are EMF consultants that can measure your home for the four different types of EMF pollution. For a home assessment, the consultation will typically take 2-3 hours to be done correctly. However, based on the protocol outlined above, an experienced EMF consultant should be able to determine if the home has some real deal breakers within an hour. I have shown potential homeowners deal breaking issues within 15 minutes. It saves them tens of thousands of dollars and lots of time in the long run. Option 1: EMF consultants typically charge between $200 and $500 for in-person assessments, depending on the time spent. If you contact me I can recommend a professional in your area. Most will be able to recommend a qualified electrician who can do the remediation you need in a manner that reduces the electromagnetic fields in your home. Option 2: Phone/Skype consulting can also be valuable if you live in an area without an EMF professional. This is particularly effective if you have some basic meters that will give the EMF consultant a picture of what is going on in your home/potential home. I can also provide info on professionals offering Skype consultation upon request. Most EMF professional charge between $100 and $150 per hour (prorated for actual minutes of the call). You can learn and accomplish a lot in a 30-60 minute call.

2. Purchase a Basic EMF Meter Package: I will now outline the basic EMF meter package that I recommend. The following are four meters that will allow you to measure the four types of EMF pollution (magnetic, electric, microwave and dirty electricity). This setup will also allow you to measure your own home while working with an EMF consultant on the phone to go over your measurements/findings. Note that I would consider this package to be a great start for most people. However, if you have a family member with health issues like those I have outlined above (they need EMF levels that are “Sensitive Safe”), then I recommend that you get some of the professional-grade, advanced meters I outline in the next 32

section or hire an EMF consultant who uses these meters (they should have meters that are even more sensitive). You will need to have the electromagnetic levels lower than these basic meters can accurately measure. To save you time and money, I have provided links (in blue) to the lowest prices that I have found on the internet for each of these meters (I own each of these meters myself). Full disclosure: I receive a small affiliate commission for some of the meters below if you make a purchase through the link provided. This helps to make this educational work sustainable for me. However, my purpose is to give you the best information possible, not to sell EMF meters.

Meter #1 – Cornet ED78S RF/Magnetic Field Meter - $139 The Cornet ED78S is the best starter meter available for the price. It easily measures microwave radiation and magnetic fields. It has good sensitivity and is easy to travel with. However, it is a single-axis meter. This means that it is not taking into consideration fields that are coming from every direction and may miss certain fields based on the plane (X, Y, Z) that you are holding the meter. This meter does an excellent job of showing you if you have bigger problems that need to be addressed. It’s an excellent starter meter that I recommend every family own and it even has a sound component so you can hear the microwave radiation (an excellent way to make this real for other people). Contact me for a simple guide to use this meter.

Meter #2 – Body Voltage Meter - $90

33

The body voltage meter can be used to determine if you have electric fields throughout your home (it is especially important to have low electric fields where you sleep). To use this device, you need a good ground connection. You can use the ground in the electrical outlet – provided the home’s electrical system is properly grounded (you can get a ground tester for $15). If not, then you can use the actual ground (see picture above right). The readings will be in milliVolts (mV) or in Volts. Ideally, with the electricity turned off in your home, you can get your body voltage to between 10 mV and 100 mV. With the electricity on, you want the readings to be below 500 mV or 0.5 volt. Many people with electrical sensitivities can feel electric fields over 0.1 Volts if they are in the field for an extended period of time. You can experiment with your home by turning off certain circuit breakers during the day to lower the overall electric field in your home. Many homes will have a few offending breakers that increase the electric fields throughout a home. If possible, keep these breakers off most of the time and you will then have reduced the electrical field component. Please note that I recommend a body voltage meter to detect electric fields because it gives sensitive enough readings for my needs. Another slightly more expensive option is to get a digital electric field meter that measures electric fields directly and does not need a ground. This is actually easier to use, but unless you spend a lot of money they are not sensitive enough for many EHS people. This digital combo electric/magnetic field meter is good for the price: $199. Ideal readings for EMF sensitive people are from 0.3 Volts/meter to 1.5 V/m. However, this meter is only sensitive down to 1.0 V/m

Meter #3 – Stetzer Dirty Electricity Meter - $100

This meter measures the harmonics or dirty electricity on your home’s electrical wiring. It measures this in its own Graham-Stetzer (GS) units. It states that the readings are ideally below 50 GS units. However, this is quite rare and I find that homes with readings below 200 GS are usually safe for most people. If the home has readings above this or that max out the meter at 2,000 GS, then some people implement dirty electricity filters if you find them effective for the frequencies that bother you. The filters make things worse for other people. It is best to alleviate the reasons why the electricity is dirty in the first place. I mention these steps above in Phase Three step #10 above.

34

Meter #4 – Radio Shack AM/FM Radio (Model 12-467) - $15 A basic AM radio is an excellent EMF detector. You turn the dial all the way to the left (530 KHz) and the radio will show you a difference in static based on changes in the electromagnetic environment. This is especially good for detecting dirty electricity in a home. Listen to the sound of the static outside on the lawn (it should be relatively mild). Then walk into the home. If you hear a noticeable change/increase in the static sound, then the prospective home has DE issues. You can also use this to detect harmonics along the electrical wiring of a home. It will help you determine if there are wiring errors or other issues that will need to be cleaned up before the home is considered healthy. I recommend the older Radio Shack AM/FM Model 12-467. You can sometimes find one on eBay for about $5 to $10. Some of the newer models have been designed not to pick up the static caused by EMF disturbances.

The total price for this basic package of four meters is $345, with approximately $10 for shipping/handling. Here is a video which demonstrates how to use this basic meter package:

3. Own an Advanced EMF Meter Package: The following are meters that you can purchase in addition to the basic package meters or to replace the basic meters. Links to all of these meters can be found at www.emfanalysis.com/emf-meters/.

35

Meter #5 - Alpha Labs UHS2 Magnetic Field Meter - $279

The Alpha Labs UHS2 milligauss meter is one of the better magnetic field meters available. It is recommended for anyone who needs a very clean environment because it can detect AC magnetic fields all the way down to 0.01 millGauss (mG). This meter also measures magnetic fields on all 3 axis and automatically calculates the correct reading. The Cornet meter in the basic package above does not do this and simply cannot do what this Alpha Labs meter can do. I highly recommend this meter for families that are serious about having a low-EMF home. Here is an excellent video demonstrating the use of this meter.

Meter #6 – Gigahertz Solutions HF35C RF Meter - $299

I really like the Gigahertz Solutions RF meter because it helps me figure what a microwave source is and where it is located. This meter is direction dependent (you can tell where the source is coming from) and makes a different sound for each type of source (cell towers, Wi-Fi, cordless phones, Bluetooth, smart meters, baby monitors, etc.). This all comes in very handy in seeing what can be remedied and what cannot. The primary drawback to this meter is that is has a narrow frequency range of 800 MHz to 2.7 GHz. This used to cover most of the commercial wireless frequencies. 36

However, with many Wi-Fi and cordless phone systems now at the 5.0 to 6.0 GHz range, this meter will miss some offending RF sources. Here is a video to help you operate this meter.

Meter #7 – TES 593 RF Meter - $320

The TES 593 RF meter is an excellent measurement device that picks up where the above Gigahertz Solutions HF35C RF meter leaves off. It is more sensitive and accurate because it measures fields on all 3 axis and measures a much wider range of microwave frequencies (10 MHz to 8.0 GHz – covering nearly all commercial RF sources). This is likely the most accurate RF meter that you can own for below $800. The only drawback is that it is not entirely user friendly and will take some time to get used to the different units and the proper methods to operate the meter. It does not make the different sounds for different sources like the Gigahertz meter, so you will not necessarily know what or where the offending source is. This is why I like this meter in conjunction with the Gigahertz Solutions HF35C RF meter. This TES will give you the most accurate total RF load in a given home and the Gigahertz Solutions meter will help you find most offending sources. Note that the TES 593 will have higher RF measurements than the Cornet or Gigahertz Solutions meters. This is because it is measuring a wider range of frequencies and is just much more accurate with its 3-axis capacity. I find that the reading will be 100 to 1000 times greater than the other 1axis RF meters. I can email you an instruction manual for this meter if you purchase it that will help you find the RF levels that are safe for you and your family. I also outline them in the one-page checklist seen at the end of this guide. Here is a helpful instructional video that will help you operate the TES 593 RF meter. I also have a handy unit conversion chart here that will help you make sense of all the different EMF readings in this guide. 37

Meter #8 – Broadband Line EMI Meter - $130 The Line Noise EMI Meter is much like the Stetzer meter mentioned in the basic package above. It measures the harmonics or dirty electricity on the electrical lines of your home. However, this meter measures a much wider range of frequencies and translates these frequencies into milliVolts (mV) or Volts. It measures line frequencies from 2 KHz to 10 MHz (note that this is up to the bottom range of the TES 593 RF meter directly above – so you are now covering all EMF frequencies from 2 KHz to 8 GHz). I like this meter better because it uses a measurement unit that I understand (milliVolts) that is accepted by engineers everywhere. It also has a sound function. Greenwave sells their own dirty electricity filters that will lower the line harmonics within this range. As I mention above, there are many other things you can do within a home to lower the dirty electricity levels without the use of filters.

This image shows what dirty electricity looks like. The clean sine wave seen above is the 60 Hz electrical frequency (North America). The other frequencies are piggy-backing along the copper wiring and are typically in the 2 KHz to 1 MHz range. These other frequencies tend to be very erratic in nature and create a form of incoherent radio-frequency radiation or static in the airspace of a home (this is what the AM radio is picking up – Meter #4 above). This can and does cause health issues over time. Studies done by Dr. Sam Milham of public schools with high levels of dirty electricity show that the teachers have a much higher incidence of cancer than the rest of the population (Image via: The National Foundation for Alternative Medicine). I discuss dirty electricity and provide instructional videos here: http://www.emfanalysis.com/what-is-dirty-electricity/ 38

If you want to go with the advanced EMF meter setup, rather than the basic package, here are the meters I would go with to cover all frequencies that you will encounter. This is the ideal EMF meter package in my opinion (at least without spending the $3,000 to $5,000 that many professionals do). You will now be able to protect your family and other people in your community with the knowledge you have gained.

The Best Advanced Meter Package to Own: 1.) 2.) 3.) 4.) 5.) 6.)

Meter #2 – Body Voltage Meter - $90 ($129 with extension to ground) (Electric Fields) Meter #4 – Radio Shack AM/FM Radio - $15 (Dirty Electricity – General EMF Detection) Meter #5 – Alpha Labs UHS2 Magnetic Field Meter - $279 (Magnetic Fields – Sensitive) Meter #6 – Gigahertz Solutions HF35C RF Meter - $299 (RF – finding source) Meter #7 – TES 593 Microwave Radiation Meter - $320 (RF – total exposure) Meter #8 – Broadband Line Noise EMI Meter - $130 (Dirty Electricity – wide range)

The total cost for an advanced, nearly professional-grade EMF meter package that measures all four types of EMF is approximately $1,200 with shipping.

Note: If you want to have a good, easy-to-use EMF meter that you can easily travel with, then I recommend that every family also have the basic Cornet RF/Magnetic field meter. 

Meter #1 – Cornet Meter ED78S - $139 (RF/Magnetic – an easy meter to travel with)

Conclusion You now have everything you need to have a safe home from an EMF perspective. I commend you for taking the time to understand this subject. You are part of a growing group of individuals and families that are realizing that vibrant health is dependent on reducing your electromagnetic exposure. This guide represents the best of what I have learned through thousands of hours of trial and error the past four years. It also includes what I have learned from my mentors in this field, some of whom are the most experienced people in the country when it comes to understanding and remediating electromagnetic field pollution. With this information, you can find and create a home with low EMF pollution. The great thing is that once you have a healthy home, you really don’t need to worry too much about electromagnetic pollution. If you sleep and spend a lot of your time in a safe place, your health will most likely be good. This is the key. My intention is that you only have to do this work once and then you and your family can go on to live amazing, productive, healthy lives. Hopefully this guide will allow you to accomplish this with ease.

A healthy, vibrant home is possible by utilizing the steps provided in this guide.

Mini-Guide for Measuring a Property

Part A: Measurements of Neighborhood upon Arriving at Property 1.) Measure the magnetic fields as you walk along the road and around the house. You want the readings to be below 2 mG, and ideally below 1 milliGauss. a. Your readings of magnetic fields = ____________________ 2.) Measure the Microwave Radiation (RF) in the neighborhood. Ideally the measurements are below 100 uW/m^2 (10 uW/m^2 for sensitive people). The following are the readings you want depending on the meter you are using. Note that each meter has a different default scale factor and different sensitivity, which I have accounted for in the following numbers: a. Cornet Meter = 0.1000 milliWatts per m^2. Your readings = ___________________ b. Gigahertz Solutions = 100 uW/m^2. Your readings = ____________________ c. TES 593 = 0.10 uW/cm^2. Your readings = _____________________ Part B: Measurements within Home: 1.) Measure the magnetic fields in the home with the electricity on and off. Pay particular attention to field strength in sleeping areas. Fields below 1 milliGauss are ideal. a. Magnetic fields with electricity on = Bed 1: ____________ Bed 2: _____________ b. Magnetic fields with electricity off = Bed 1: ____________ Bed 2: _____________ 2.) Measure the Microwave Radiation (RF) in the home. Ideally the measurements are below 20 uW/m^2 in the bedrooms (for sensitive people, I recommend below 5 uW/m^2 in sleeping areas). The following are ideal readings depending on the meter you are using: a. Cornet Meter = 0.0200 milliWatts per m^2. Your readings = __________________ b. Gigahertz Solutions = 20 uW/m^2. Your readings = ___________________ c. TES 593 = 0.010 uW/cm^2. Your readings = ___________________ 3.) Measure electric fields through body voltage. Ideal is below 500 mV with electricity on and below 100 mV with electricity off. Be sure to use the electrical ground tester first. a. Body Voltage with electricity on = Bed 1: _____________ Bed 2: ______________ b. Body Voltage with electricity off = Bed 1: _____________ Bed 2: ______________ 4.) Measure dirty electricity (DE) or electrical line noise in outlets throughout home. Here are the ideal measurements based on the measurement device you are using. DE filters will reduce these readings, as will taking out CFL/LED bulbs and making the home electrical system improvements mentioned throughout this guide. a. Graham-Stetzer Meter - Ideal is below 200 GS units: Your readings =_____________ b. Line Noise Meter – Ideal is below 240 mV: Your readings = ____________________ 42
