Preface

I thought that if I designed puzzles in the Hawaiian language, I'd at least retain a word or two as I immersed myself in the environment and eventually be able to proudly claim that I speak the language. As I designed the puzzles, I began to appreciate what an effective learning tool a collection of these puzzles could be and how such a work could contribute to making the original language of Hawai'i a living language. So here they are. I owe thanks to the foresight of William H. Hamilton, director, University of Hawai'i Press, who also appreciated the value of such a collection to present and future generations of Hawaiian language students and who patiently worked with me in preparing this collection for publication. It is absolutely imperative that I thank my mother, Rose Mitchell, for her devotion to this work. She had only encouraging words from the first moment she saw my initial ideas. She sacrificed many hours to assist with the proofreading. Her loyalty and support were at sacrifice to her personal interests and plans. This project is as much hers as mine. My sons, David and Michael Frayer, have supported every eccentric project they've known me to pursue and no doubt are ecstatic that one has finally gotten off the drawing board. To Aunty Viby and Uncle Dick, who recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, I say thank you for your faith in me. I haven't forgotten your many kindnesses. Hawaiian Language Fonts commercially available through Guava Graphics made typing the language a less than tedious affair. The motifs in the crossword puzzles that replace the normally blank squares are, for the most part, from Guava Graphics as well. It is my hope that those of you who solve these puzzles enjoy the process as much as I enjoyed the process of designing them for you. I hope that collections such as this will contribute to making the language of Hawai'i a part of our everyday lives. I did learn a few Hawaiian words. Now I need to design a collection of puzzles to help me learn the grammatical structure of the language. Any suggestions? Any discrepancies or outright errors that remain are mine and mine alone. GEORGIANA R . FRAYER-LUNA

Introduction

The eight thematic sections of puzzles in this collection are ali'i, kalo, kapa, la'au, manu, moana, 'aina, and 'uala (royalty, taro, tapa, plants, birds, ocean, land, and sweet potatoes). These are areas of life basic to the survival and sustenance of early Hawaiian settlers. Ali'ts ruled, kalo and 'uala were staple foods. Manu provided food and feathers for the magnificent capes of the ali'i. La'au and moana provided food, shelter, medicine, utensils, and entertainment. The Pukui/Elbert Hawaiian Dictionary, published by the University of Hawai'i Press, is the authoritative source for the words used in the puzzles. Only the words from this dictionary that lend themselves to crossword puzzles are used. These are words that do not begin with a capital letter and are single words. For example, eia is included in the puzzle lists because it is not a proper noun (capitalized) and is one word, whereas eia aku is not because it is two words. The puzzles are designed to accommodate beginning to advanced Hawaiian language students from age 13 to adult.

Thematic Sections and Word Lists Each of the eight thematic sections begins with the introduction of a list of words relating to the theme for the section. The word lists are arranged alphabetically by the number of letters in each word (that is, two-letter words come first and are alphabetized separately, followed by three-letter words, four-letter words, and so on). For example, here is a word list relating to sounds:

Word Search Puzzles Following each word list is a word search puzzle. Twelve words from the thematic word list are embedded in it. The twelve words are given alphabetically. Check off each word as it is found in the puzzle. The words may be in one of the rows and read left to right or right to left, or they may be in one of the columns and read up or down. Others may be embedded in the puzzle diagonally from right to left or left to right, top to bottom or bottom to top. Any letter(s) can be used in more than one word. The okina (glottal stop) is treated as a separate letter. See the sample below. The answers to this and all the word search puzzles are in the back of the book.

Sample Word Search Puzzle Twelve Hawaiian words relating to sound are in this word search puzzle. Find and circle each. (Two words are circled to get you started.)

Crossword Puzzles Following each word search puzzle are the crossword puzzles for each particular thematic section. The words used in each puzzle are given in alphabetical order. This

Introduction

differs from the word list at the beginning of each section in that they are not arranged according to word size and are not exclusively words from the thematic list. The puzzle diagram itself is traditional in the across and down format, with numbered squares to match the clues. The clues, however, are not like clues found in most crossword puzzles. To facilitate consistency in the use of the Hawaiian language, definitions are taken directly from the Pukui/Elbert Hawaiian Dictionary. In most cases, the clue is taken from the first definition for any given word (if not, the number of the definition is included). By reading the clues and checking the word list for any particular puzzle, you may already be able to start filling in words in their proper places in the puzzles. If a word or clue is unfamiliar to you, pick a word from the Hawaiian puzzle word list and look it up in the Pukui/Elbert dictionary. Then read down the list of clues until you find the dictionary definition you've just looked up. By noting whether the clue is across or down and the number of the clue, you can now insert the correct Hawaiian word in its proper place in the puzzle. An alternate method is to isolate a key word in the given English clue definition and look it up in the English portion of the Pukui/Elbert dictionary for an equivalent Hawaiian word. Confirm the Hawaiian word's use in the puzzle by finding it in the puzzle's Hawaiian word list. In the sample crossword puzzle in the first Across clue, for example, isolate the word finished and look it up in the English portion of the Pukui/Elbert dictionary. There you will find the Hawaiian word pau. Is pau in the alphabetically arranged puzzle word list? Yes, it is. Does it fit in the One/Across space? It certainly does. Is it the correct answer? Continue working the puzzle to find out or check the answer section in the back of the book. The answers to all the puzzles are in the back of the book. If you ever feel stumped at any time or want to verify your progress at any point, you can just turn a few pages to check the solution. Also try pronouncing each word as you use it. It's a fun way to learn Hawaiian words and definitions. Use the Pukui/Elbert dictionary pronunciation guide. The sample crossword puzzle is on the the next page. The solution is in the back of the book.
