VORWORT ZUR 6. AUFLAGE

FOREWWORD TO 6. EDITION
Eight years have passed since the first edition of this book. The investi gation has been focussed more and more on the interesting problem of how the line-makers were ableto draw their complicated figures on such huges scales. I know now with certainty which was the basic length
which went into the making of the figures. On page 79 the possibility was mentioned that 1.10 meters and decimal subdivisions of it were used
in the process. A recent reappraisal of dimensions has shown a prefer ence for lengths of about 38-40 cm. The megalithic yard (83,3m 41,5 x2) found by the Scottish Professor, Alexander Thom in ancient megalithicmonuments of Great Britain and France would correspond
to agreater hight of their builders. Further details will soon be presented
in a first supplement to this book.
One factor, which could cause damage to the drawings, is the fast growth of industry, due to which a change of climate has taken place on the Peruvian coast. The Nazca-region was once considered the driest in
the world (see page 44). Now it rains there every so often. The future of
the drawings is uncertain with the rain increasing every year. In the course of the past years Ihave recieved help and co-operation
from many friends and organizations. As before it is not possible for me to mention everyonepersonally. I am especially endebted to Lufthansa 7 in Lima and Eva Pehlemann and Margarete Schweizer in Kurr Zalud to Kurt

PREFACIO PARA LA6. EDICION
tan amablemente me prestaron ayuda.

FOREWORD
Among the most fascinating testimonies of the principal and highly developed civilizations of ancient America are the famous ceramics and textiles of the South-Peruvian Nazca-culture. It is very
little,
however, which we know about manifestations in other fields of this culture. Maria Reiche, a German mathematician and geographer, has for over two decades, investigated one of the secrets of this early culture, having dedicated all her time and efforts to the mysterious
ground-drawings in the region of the tributaries of the Río Grande in the provinces of Nazca and Palpa. She considers these rightly as documentations of an ancient calendar-science of the classical period of the Nazca-culture, which belongs tothe first millenium of our era. These drawings, which are imprinted on the stone-covered surface
of a desert, have to be preserved for the survey, which is to be carried on and completed, since it will throw light on some aspects
of this culture, which, because of the complete lack of written records, can only be investigated through carcful and laborious field-work. In the follo wing, the author touches the question, if directions and
lengths could have been employed for time reckoning purposes. Looking for the extent of knowledge these ancient peoplepossessed, the question arises, of how could the old masters have transferred geometric forms and repre[entative figures from one scale to another,
producing sometimes giant shapes. The problem is discussed, whether it míght be possible to coordinate the shapes of these drawings to certain styles and epochs, i. e. to synchronize their figures with
consecutive types of ceramics. It is in this context that the author touches the subject of historical sequences of the Peruvian cultures. Students of American antiquity are indebted to the author for her
tireless work and especially for this attempt tointerest a wider publie in acreation of an ancient people which the historian Paul Kosok called once "the largest astronomy-book of the world".

PREFACIO
a otras, y a veces
enormes, escalas.

University, New York, die geheimnisvollen Bodenzeichnungen

FOREWORD
Shortly after my arrival in Pcru in 1932 Tcame across an
written by the astronomer Rolf Müller about the Intihuatanas'article, ee' observatories) in ancient Peru. This article roused my interest in the
astronomy of ancient Peruvians and I began to examine some of the ruins and stone-structures of the Incas and their predecessors, many of which were probably built for observation of the heavenly bodies
and the fixing of important dates throughout the year. When later I came to the coast, I abandoned this study. I did not imagine then. that it would be near the coast, that the most important astronomical
monument of Peru, and perhaps of the world, would befound.
In 1939 Dr. Paul Kosok of Long Island University discovered the
mysterious ground-drawings of Nazca (Department of Ica, in Peru). He handed over the information to me and in 1946 suggested my
going to Nazca and starting with the investigation which I have carried on until now. At first I could do it only as a side-line. Soon
however Iwas able to dedicate all my time to Nazca. Through court esy of the owners of the hacienda San Pablo, Mr. Tugwood and Mr.
Evelyn, it was made possible for me to live near the ground-drawings.
(On pg. 32 a small house is visible, one room of whichIcould use all
these years). Several small grants from different institutions: two from Peru (Escuela de Altos Estudios and Ministry of Education), two from the Wenner-Green Foundation and two from the Deutsche
Forschungsgemeinschaft were stretched over a long time by living
under rather primitive conditions. Although a graduate of mathe matics (Technische Hochschule Dresden, Hamburg University), I have ventured into a field which is considered as belonging to arch
aeology. However until now archaeologists have not subjected it to a detailed study. It fits better into the history of science, considered as a chapter of which it is extremely fascinating, holding one in its grip, the more one enters into the subject.
Until now I have had to carry on the work alone and with limited
means. However there was one place in Peru, where I always cou count on help and advice. The Servicio Aerofotografico Nationai, which belongs to the Peruvian Airforce, not only provided the i
essary aerial photographs and undertook special flights Over the ground-drawings, I could also get advice about surveying ad photographic techniques and use drawing tables and instru 10
ments. It is not possible to mention all those who helped in this
work, from the highest officers down to the technicians of the diffe
rent departments. The photographs of the drawings, part of which are shown in this book, are a lasting testimony of their contribution to this great chapter of their past history. The corresponding pages in each of the three larnguages are some times slightly different. As cach page had to occupy the same space,
it was sometimes necessary to add or to omnit a passage. Moreover,
while describing a subject in différent languages, one tends to throw
adifferent light on it each time, according to the specific traits of the
respective nations.
The main object of this book is to arouse the interest of a wider
public in this fascinating subject. It is hoped however that it was
possible to show the way in which further investigation will have to proceed and that the following may serve as an introduction to the study of Nazca-ground-drawings. A scientific evaluation of the ma terial at hand, only part of which could be shown here, is being prepared for future reference. For help and advice in the composition of text and pictures Iam indebted to Hanna Schwebel, for revising the German, English and Spanish versions to Elisabeth Hausdörfer, Mrs. Margaret Muir, Mr.
Richard Gale and the novelist Clorinda Caller and especially to my
sister, Dr. Renate Reiche-Grosse, who with great understanding and
wisdom helped to remove all the obstacles which lay in the way of
this publication.

PREFACIO
No solo puso a mi 12
fué a veces necesario añadir uomitir algo.

Man
Man möchte
aber noch viel mehr wissen. Man möchte wissen, warum gewisse

INTRODUCTION
There is no doubt that among all Southamerican countries the most interesting is Peru. Millions speak their own native language, wearing
a picturesque costume which is composed of mediaeval Spanish and
ancient local elements. Native art, together with local customs and ceremonies still survive. Together with colossal and mysterious pre historic stone-structures, they give testimony of a once highly devel oped civilization. Cuzco and Machu Picchu with their well-known fortresses and edifices are only a small part of the wealth of imposing remnants from prehistoric times. Peru is widely known as "the Land
of the Incas". The Inca-Empire extended at the arrival of the Spani ards over most of Peru and part of the neighbouring countries. The dynasty of the Incas represents however only the last stage of along cultural evolution, whose beginnings reach back into the second
millenium B. C. Much remains to be explored, many gaps exist in our
knowledge of the ancient population, which was once much more numerous than now. New discoveries are made every year, prehistoric cities are being discovered, hitherto unknown temples and fortresses excavated. But often these discoveries arouse new controversies. It
is possible to distinguish different epochs, one can classify objects
according to their local distribution. Other important aspects however are not yet sufficiently explored. One wants to know how certain motifsin lithic art and pottery came to be distributed over the whole continent. Was the art of writing known at some time? lany tacts point to this. It is to be expected that in times to conme our present knowledge, together with added discoveries, will coagulate
complete picture of the past of this great country, which at the be ginning of our era has reached a cultural level, which was in no way inferior to that of the Mayas and Aztecs.

foreciente, observando todavía costumbres y ceremonias provenien

Several centuries before the time of the Incas, the inhabitants of the southern Peruvian coastal region created a monument which.
being unique in its kind, was intended to transmit an important mes sage to posterity. Its enormousextension and the accurate lines of its contours could remind us of the Pyramids of Egypt. But instead of looking up to a work of monumental three-dimensional simplicity, we look down from great heigths on flat surfaces, which over miles
are covered with geometric patterns which spread, as if drawn by giants with rulers of hundreds of feet. Here as there we are in the
desert. But instead of the glare of yellowish white sand reflecting relentlessly into the eyes, an agreeable brownish colour spreads over plains and mountains and the slopes of the deeply cut-in valleys which emerge from the towering Andes. Travelling by air (not by jet-plane) from Lima to Chile or to Arequipa, halfway between these two cities our route may take us, if we are lucky, along the western slopes of the Cordillera. Looking
down on plains, terraces and tablelands, there appear in different
places triangles, rectangles and trapezoids neatly outlined in a lighter colour on the brownish surface. Many of them are in style and
appearance similar to airfields. Flying at lower altitudes, in a small plane or a helicopter, we shall detect in their vicinity a great number
of smaller geometric designs, consisting of straight lines of different widths and lengths and smaller triangles and quadrangles. The lines
cross over the straight-edged fields, run beside or radiate from them, intersecting cach other and forming intricate networks. Other shapes,
instead of being abstract and geometrical, represent animals, appea ring in different places among the straight lines. Being clearly visible even from altitudes of about 1500 feet, one can imagine their enor mous sizes. It is evident, that all these figures and lines are man-made,
having been preserved intact over centuries and escaping detection
only by their large scale making them unrecognizable from the ground. When the largest drawings were first seen from airplanes, they were taken to be remnants of ancient irrigation. No special attention was
given them until Dr. Paul Kosok came to Peru to study ancient irr gation on thecoast. After finding that they had nothing to do with it, he initiated the study of the figures with the discovery and re-tracing of a huge figure of a bird.
20
In order to take stock of the countless numbcrs and infinitc variety
of the mysterious drawings, the author had to traverse the pampas
(in Perú pampa means barren, tat land) on foot. The next figure to
be discovered was the huge image of a spider, after this dozens of
other figures of animals were encountercd. The widest lines and the
largest delineated surfaces appearcd on acrial photographs which
were taken by the Peruvian Government for surveying purposes and
could be used as guides for detailed surveys and the making of charts
of the general layout.Guided by these charts, two special lights over
the drawings were undertaken by the Servicio Aerofotográfico Na
cional. Much valuable information was gathered from the resulting
verticalphotographs, enlarged sections of which are shown here. But
in order to get a real picture of the great variety and the extremely complicated arrangement of linesand figures, a plane is not sufficient. Ahelicopter is necessary for that. When for the first time one of these
arrived in Peru, it was requested immediately fot a flight over the
pampa, which took place under the auspices of the Wenner-Gren Foundation. The pictures were taken with a large aerial camera
belonging to the Servicio Aerofotográfico. In order to obtain ap
proximately vertical photographs, the author had totake them from
a board attached to the helicopter beside the cabin, the camera being
held hanging down by its own weight. Three of the photographs taken on this flight are shown here. An occasional flight from Are quipa to Lima of a helicopter belonging to the Health Ministry pro vided an opportunity to take some more pictures with a 35 mm
camara of some newly discovered figures. Additional photographs were taken from a small plane, whose owner, Gonzalo del Solar, had
the kindness to point out some figures of divinities which he had discovered on steep slopes. The climax of the photographic work was reached, when the Peruvian airminister, general Vargas Prada, gave
permission touse agovernment helicopter for several days. Avery in
genious way to install an automatic aerial camera outside the cabin was
found by the mechanics of the Servicio Aerofotográfico, making it pos sible, after careful preparation of the itinerary, to reduce the work of taking series of vertical pictures to continually levelling the camera. These pictures, showing a great amount of detail which has not been studied yet, will serve as a basis for years of investigation to come.

No

Where roads are cut into lateral slopes, the contrast between the upper

The most important sites with ground-drawings spread over a strip of
about 30 miles from North to South. Where the mountains, emerging from the valleys and before rcaching the vicinity of the coast, have their greatest width, they could sustain a numerous population which created the ground drawings on the higher levels. Of the complicated networks of lines and figures only the largest are shown here. The chart, which is based on the official map, government aerial photographs and local surveys by the author, shows the principal sites with part of the lines and delineated surfaces and the long connecting lines between starlike centers. The two small towns near the northern and southern extremes, connected by the
Panamerican highway, are Palpa and Nazca. The rivers Palpa and Viscas, after uniting, run into the Rio Grande, which further ahead receives the
Nazca-river.
The Ingenio-valley is, like all Peruvian coastal valleys, an oasis, which,
having becn intensely cultivated by an ancient population living along its borders, is now occupied by huge single-crop-plantations, which still use the same irrigation ditches, which were dug before the arrival of the
Spaniards. The brown colour of the surrounding platcaus extends down to the border of the valley. The heap of stones at the lcft is part of the ground-drawings, which are interspersed cverywhere by similar hcaps or
large boulders, having been put there as markers by the ancient draftsmen.

Occupying the foreground of the above picture is thc foot of ahuge bird (Pg. 52, fig. 12), which was found beside many other drawings on a plateau above Palpa. Most figures arc traversed by several straight lines,
sometimcs running parallel to part of the figure, or else, as is the case in the line showing here, coinciding with a short piccc. This arrangement
seems to indicate, that figures were drawn specifically in places where several long, straight lines cross over each other. Figures and geometric
patterns were preferably drawn at the very edgeof the plateaus.
solche gewundene Kurve findet.
A crocodile or lizard, over 600 feet long, was cut in two by the Panarnerican
highway, its hind-legs having been obliterated in the process. Here again we have a figure which is situated beside a large geometric surface, part of its border showing at the upper left corner of the aerial photograph. On
this picture and on the preceding ones of the bird and the spider the special way shows up in which figures were made of one single curved
and uninterrupted line delineating their contours. While traversing the pampa on foot one can recognize the existence of a figure by such a winding
path, it is however not always possible to reconstruct it. The cartracks running over the figure did not exist when it was found. If no drastic measures are taken, the giant drawing boards of ancient Peruvians will be converted into a thick maze of cartracks, produced by visitors driving at
randomn over the pampa.

crossing over the Paname
rican highway. The lines begin at a small hill, from which the picturewas taken.
Both lines run together forming a wide line, which ends at what looks
likea triangle, being actually a strip about 3000 feet long with an average width of 100 feet, its right border being a continuation of one of the lines. It ends close to the descent to the Ingenio-valley. From the same hill fitty
lines go out altogether, radiating in different directions. Each of these ends at a delineated surface, another line, afigure, or another starlike center.
Another pair of parallel lines, after traversing a dry desert-valley, runs up
a steep slope. Connecting two plateaus covered with ground-drawings, they could not have been built as footpaths, being extremely time-consuming to climb straight up. Moreover one line would have been enough instead of three (the left one being a double line in itself). The picture was taken from their starting-place on the preceding plateau, which is situated south of Palpa.

This view shows clearly that the drawings consist of shallow furrows, the narrowest being mere scratches on the surface, Even the surface of the largest quadrangles is no more than one foot below that of the surrounding
pampa. A corner of oneof these shows in the background, lines of diferent
width radiating fromits border. The road with cars on it was once a wide line connecting two centers.

It seems almost incredible that ground-drawings made by super. ficially scratching the surface could have withstood the ravages of time and weather over such long periods. The climate is one of the driest of the globe. One could say that it rains for half an hour everv two years. And although strong winds carry great quantities of sand. not encountering any obstacles on the vast tablelands open towards
rth and south, they take it further north, where at seventy miles distance one can see huge dunes on both sides of the highway. More
over close to the ground the air is becalmed considerably. Owing to their dark colour, the surface-stones absorb much heat, causing a cushion of warn air to protect the surface from strong winds. An
additional factor contributing to the ground remaining undisturbed for hundreds of years is that the soil contains a certain amount of
gypsum which, moistened by daily morning-dew, slightly affxes every stone to its base. This makes it possible to retrace the steps by
which the ancient topographers laid out the accurate shapes of their complicated structures, having used stones as markers which have
remained in the same place where they were put when the drawings were made. It was found, for example, that the huge regular curves of animal-figures were composed of segments of circles, whose
centers were marked by a stone which had, or was cut to, one hun dredth of the corresponding radius. The whole region of the ground-drawings was originally an ex
tensive basin between the Andes and a range of elevations along the
coast. It filled up with alluvionic material coming down from the
Andes, at the same time rising and falling periodically and sometimes
sinking below sea-level, by which process it was penetrated by sea
water, which is the cause of the aforesaid occurrence of gypsum in
the ground. Afterwards began the process of oxydation of the sur
tace-stones, exposed to daily morning-dew followed by excessive heat. The fine material between the stones was blown away by the
wind. The result of this process was a vast plain, covered with dark
stones, which was gradually cut by rivers, whose widening valleys
were to provide the ground-drawing population with their beans, maize and peanuts.

Usually the line of a figure describes only its contours. In this effigy of a
fish, which is about 80 feet long, it continues inside the figure. An appen
dage below the mouth might be related to similar appendages found in
threc bird-figures (pg.52, I1, pg. 53, II 2, IV 1). The dotted line consists of the imprints of horses' hoofs. If traffic on horseback continues, the draw
ings will be obliterated, as can be seen in other places. This should be made impossible in the future.
The same figure as seen from the ladder. It is among the smallest found until now, there being only two smaller ones. In the background the
Ingenio-valley. Along its opposite edge there are several small platcaus with spirals and triangles on them, the most important of which have been destroyed recently having been put to use for cotton-growing by the ncighbouring farms.

The grcat majority of animal figures and some others consisting of winding paths can be found near the descent to the Ingenio-valley on a strip of land which is densely covered with geometric drawings. The following chart does not show all the figures and relatively few of the lines and straight edged surfaces. Only two of the great number of spirals could be shown here, only the largest geometric surfaces and the most important of the
many starlike centres. These latter are all situated on slightly elevated
places, the stones by which they were marked by the ancient people being visible from considerable distances. One such centre consists of a group of small hills. The centres are connected with each other by long lines.
Most of the largest triangles and quadrangles are connected with or close
to the edge of the valley. Figur 3 is unique, consisting of two heaps of
stones shaped like lamas.

Dic
Ricsen unter ihnen sind zwei stark stilisierte Vögel I 1und I 2. Sic stehen ganz außcrhallb der graducllen Größenabstufung der übrigen
Figuren.
die größte Figur I 1.
In order to give an idea of size, a number of figures were drawn on the same scale on pages 52-53. The giants among the figures are
stvlized birds I1 and I2. Their outsize shapes cannot be pared with the other figures, whose sizes form a consecutive scale.
two
Firure I lconsists only of hcad and wings, the place where body a
foet could have been shows now the traces of tormer traffic over al
Dampa by horse and donkey. I 2has only a head, feet and an undula
ting neck. The line which describes its contours, having a width o Over ten feet, looks from the ground like a wide road which only b. its frequent turns can be recognized as part of a figure.
The two figures which come next in size are likewise images of
birds. One, II 1, is represented as in a turn in its flight. II 2, being more
stylized, has a bag under its bill, the same as is the case in I1. In a smaller bird, IV 1, with the same peculiarity, it seems possible to
recognize which species was to be represented. It is the frigate-bird or sea-eagle, a thieving bird with a gullet which it can blow up to an
extraordinary size to frighten other birds with a fish in their bill to
make them drop it. Although the sea is at about thirty miles' distance,
there must have been some traffic between here and the coast in
vears when the rivers remained dry, which ever so often occurs, and
the population had to fall back on sea-food for their survival. There is a figure, which is not shown here, having the exact shape of a whale. Seashells are frequently being found on the pampa on pre
historic camping places, marked by stones. Theclassification of figures according to size, as shown on page 53, cannot be considered as final. Birds III2 and III 3 have been put into the same class as the monkey. The first one, having by its outs1ze blll
the same length as the monkev, is really smaller and should, by the distance of line-segments from each other. be put beside the spider: II 3 is difficult to classify. By its total length it is comparable to the
giant figures on page 52. The neck has the length and style of the monkey, while its body is strangely similar to the spider, having the
Same size as well as the same distance between neighbouring ses ments of lines.
It is evident that birds have been the principal topic of theimagery of ground-drawing art. Up to now eighteen birds have been found, their number only being surpassed by that of the ubiquitous spirals.
50
I 1tiene solo cabeza y alas.

A small figure, the line of its contours continuing inside, as is the case in the fsh of page 46. But for its ears, the figure could represent a whale. Ir
could also be a legendary creature, a feline with the tail of a fish. This figure consists exclusively of curves, which were carefully and beautifully
CxCcuted. Where the line runs out of the picture at the upper left, it leads to an important starlike centre. Its direction, as seen from this centre, pointed tothe setting sun on December 21st, which is summer-solstice on
the southern hemisphere.
The head of the largest bird is made of segments of circles, whose radii
vary between 32 and 66 feet. The figure is much stylized, showing in profile, while two circles of equal diameter could represent two eyes. The two curves continuing from the end of the neck have exactly the same radius,
being both concentrical to the eyes. The whole figure on the opposite page
would fit into this head of a bird. This figure is situated at the place where the two parallel lines on page 36 melt into one.

The monkey and surroundings would be an appropriate subject for a special study, as it is a complete unit and the pursuit of cach line to its origin does not, as at the border of the pampa, lead unendingly from one thing to another. This drawing consists of no more than two elements. One is a wide line (or better geometric surface, being at the beginning twice as wide as at the end) with a stem which, almost a mile long, leads
into the maze of lines at the cdge of the pampa. The other is one single uninterrupted line, of which only a small piece is lost between the end of a zigzagline and a small winding path at the bottom of the long geometric
surface. The line starts from one sideof the long surface and after describing
the contours of the monkey, consisting only of curves, runs through two
diferent zigzag-shapes and crosses sixteen times over the geometric surface
at whose top it finally ends.

organischen Gebilden niemals zwei einander genau gleich.

Up to now only animal-figures have been discussed. It would seerm
that the ground-drawings consisted only of these. Such is not the case however. They are but small units, spread here and there be.
tween the huge geometric drawings. On pages 6061 it is apparent
how insignificant are for example the bird with the undulating neck
(middle left), the iguana (upper right) and a small spiral among the maze of giant triangles and wide and narrow lines. These drawings continue with the same density for another mile and a half along the
border of the Ingenio-valley. These places will be the subject of a detailed study. Unfortunately limitations of space allow only
ficial treatment, though enough it is hoped to excite by afew examples
and suggest the extent of the research to be undertaken.
The geometric drawings give at closer inspection the impression
of a cipher-script, in which the same words are sometimes written in huge letters, at another time in minute characters. There are line
arrangements which appear in a great variety of size-categories to gether with very similar shapes. All drawings are composed of
certain limited number of basic elements, which between them show
a certain range of variation. Even when equal in size, there are, as in living beings, never two the same. As an example of such a formative element we take a shape, which in Nazca-terminology could be named "the whip". It consists of a
long triangle or trapezoid from which at its shorter end a line goes out, running back again beside it. On the photograph of page 61 three such whip-like shapes can be recognized. One, which is attached to the border of the large quadrangle at the edgeof the pampa, shows in the middle of the picture, a second one touches this latter from the right, which in turn crosses over a smaller one.
Another formative element consists of a long line, oscilating several times back and forth. An example of it can be recognized as
part of the line connected with the monkey, which also contains a
third element, the zig-zag-line, which appears there in two diterent varieties. The large oscillating lines run back and forth over distan cesof over five miles. Zigzag- and oscillating lines can be found isolated or running beside or across triangles and quadrangles.

Elespacio no permite tratarlos

A whiplikeshape is followed by an oscillating line in a very similar manner
to the preceding drawing, except that the scale is twenty times as large.
At the end of its routethe line describes what could be a seaweed with its root and finally runs into a large quadrangle. The total length of the line from the top of the triangle to the quadrangle, including the igure is a
little more than three miles. There seems to be no point in constructing so
complicated a path to connect two places, as it necessitates an hour's walk
ing, whereas the distance could normally be covered in ffve minutes.
Obviously there was a reason which we have yet to discover. In many
drawings we find the same arrangement as here of a figure, being inserted within the course of a connection between geometric surfaces, centers of
distribution of lines or other lines. There are also figures which consist
of a closed circuit.

Asmaller double spiral was found among a maze of lines. The line pointing
to its border which was cleaned for the photograph on page 75, could have been constructed for solstice observations.

The marvellous regularity of two spirals of which one runs inside the other was produced by winding two ropes, 150 and 130 feet long, around three posts forming a triangle.

Allover the thirty miles and more of desert where ground-drawings
can be found, these show always the same basic forms. The same kind of quadrangles, triangles, zigzag- and oscillating lines on large and small scales, the same starlike centres can be found everywhere, on vast plains, narrow plateaus between gorges and on islands of even
ground amidst a maze of dry riverbeds. They are one single creation
and are, together with the animal figures, quantitatively and quali
tatively the most outstanding of all works by ancient Peruvians. One has to consider the countless tons of stones which were removed from the geometric surfaces, the care that had to be taken to make
lines and borders absolutely straight and to give them the exact direc tions which they were intended to have. To that must be added the difficulties which lay in the drawing of the figures with their beautiful
and regular curves, which could only have been produced in these giant sizes, if every piece, being part of a circle, had a radius and a centre, whose length and exact position were carefully laid out. There can be no doubt that with this enormous amount of work,
continuing through hundreds of years, ancient Peruvians pursued a definite aim, which lay in the centre of their interest. Dr. Paul Kosok,
who was the first to tellabout the drawings, was also the first to sug gest a plausible explanation. A chance observation, which he made on the same day he discovered the first figure, led him to it. After
recovering from the wonder of seeing on his tracing-paper the figure of a bird, which had taken shape gradually as he was surveying the winding paths he saw before him, he left and on his way back found himself at a place with many linesradiating from it. At that moment the sun set in the direction of one of these lines. It was June 21st, the
solstice-day, in the northern temperate zone the longest day of the
year. If this linewas constructed specifically for a solstice-observation, then at least the meaning of one was explained. Perhaps all lines were constructed towards horizon-points where heavenly bodies set and rose, and the drawings were, as Dr. Kosok named them the largest
astronomy-book of the world'". The first step towards obtaining proof of this was a search for more solstice-lines. It can be no chance
happening that of each of the three largest oscillating lines the first
piece points in a solstice-direction.
70
People in the temperate zones of the northern hemisphere from
December 21st on begin to look forward to the arrival of spring bringing new life to the frozen carth. "They watch the sun attaining
higher positions, rising carlier and setting later. December is also a month of expectation in Nazca. People watch cagerly the dry riverbeds
which are due to fill with water which can be conducted over the fields to cover again the dry, barren lands with luscious green. The
sun's rising- and setting-points, oscillating like a pendulum over east and west, could be employed as a giant timc-measuring device on which to read the return of the fruitful season and the iDtermediate
epochs. All over the world monuments can be found, which were built for
the observation of the solstices. The best known in Europe is Stone henge in southern Britain. It consists of giant stonepillars which were arranged along sun-and
moon-directions. Similar monuments
exist in Peru and Bolivia. The purpose for which they were built could be gathered from their name in the native language. They are called Intiwatana", or the place to which the sun is tied", a name that could be derived from the fact that around the solstice-dates the
directions towards the rising or setting of the sun remain the same, similar to a pendulum which stands still before the reversal of its motion.
The moon-directions, mentioned before, refer to a movement of
its rising-and setting-points, which, like thoseof the sun, oscillate over East and West. Only here the shifting back and forth does not extend
over a year, but takes only about a month, its amplitude being in
some years more, in others less, changing within acycle of about 18 years. In a similar way as the moon-directions found at Stone
henge, the numerous lines in Nazca pointing in the corresponding
directions, could have been constructed as indicators for extreme
positions of moonsets and -rises on both sides of the East-West direc
tion. Especially within these tropical latitudes, where sun and moon,
when at their highest point in the sky, alternate between northern and Southern positions, this change cannot have remained unnoticed.
There could moreover have existed a special interest in the positions
of heavenly bodies, their being made responsible for the destinies of men and of nations, a way of thinking which can be found even in
advanced civilizations everywhere.

On Deccmber 21st the sun sets to the right of two lines. At some tim within the first and the sixth century B. C. it touched the horizon exactly over the line on the upper picture. In case of having been constructed for a solstice-observation, the line must date from this period. It could however refer to the last point of light. In that case it would belong to some time between 350 and 950 A. D. The line on the lower picture could have been used for a solstice-observation with the sun touching the horizon between
800 and 1400A. D. We have to discard the possibility of an observation of the last point of the sun, as only nowv it has rcached a position over this
line. On the picture, taken against the sun, the borders of the line appear irregular. They can however be defined within amargin of two inches. The two lines are 2600 and 1400 feet long.

From the direction of a solsticc-line we cannot calculate its
age. The progress of the rising-and sctting-points of the solsticeexact -sun
along the horizon, being due to the carth's axis slightly rising on i: plane of rotation, is so slow, that in lower latitudes the solstice-die tions remain practicaly the same for several hundred years. It is possible however to tell, if a line could have been used for solstice-ah. servation within the limits of age of the drawings, the respective time
interval having been gathered from other sources. About 33/ miles
from the two solstice-lines, at the end of a quadrangle a piece of a
found which, being of soft wood, had only been preserved
below the surface. Dr. Duncan Strong submitted it for radiocarbon dating, which gave the year 525 + 80 A.D. The Nazca- and Paracas style in pottery and textiles, to which according to archacologists the figures are related, belong to the centuries between about 300 B.C
and 900 A.D. The enormous number of drawings, criss-crossing and overlapping, the many places where one figure was drawn on top of another, suggest their formation to have taken place over a long period.
Some other linesare pointing in directions in which a star could be seen touching the horizon only before the time-interval within which the lines are being placed. Among these is a number of north-south
lines and others grouped symmetrically on both sides. Their existence can only be explained by their makers having in view the movements of heavenly bodies. The lines could have been traced towards higher positions on the firmament. In that case it would be very difficult to
know their significance because of the great number of possible inter pretations. This impossibility however does not exclude the possi bility of an astronomical meaning of the drawings. Their extremely
complicated arrangement could very wellcorrespond to the compl1 cated movements of heavenly bodies. On the Peruvian coast, where a high cultural level was reached 1n ancient times, astronomy must have been cultivated. Later the Incas based their calendar on observation of the heavens. Even now
people in the mountains celebrate June-solstice by lighting fires on
ountain-tops,dancing around and jumping over them, which is the
Same custom that is still alive in many places in highly industrialized
Europe.

What is most impressive in all ground-drawings is their great size, coupled with perfect proportions. One wondcrs how this could have
been accomplished. Especially the animal-figurcs with their beauti fully laid out curves and their well balanccd dimensions are so dif fcult to construct, that the ways and mncans of how they were made
is amystery which, if ever solved, will take ycars to investigate. The basic tool for the transferring to the ground the elaborate shapes the ancient craftsmen had in mind and which, in their final form, unless they were able to fly, they could only see with the eyes of the mind, was a unit of measurcment. They must first have drawn models on scales comprehended within their field of vision, on which length and direction of every piece was carefully measured and taken note of. An approximate estimate of these would not have been
enough to produce shapes, in which a deviation of a few inches would spoil the proportions, which, as we see them on aerial photographs, are perfect. Those acquainted with surveying techniques will best understand the accomplishments needed for such an undertaking. Ancient Peruvians must have had instruments and equipment which we ignore and which together with ancient knowledge were buried and hidden from the eyes of the conquerors as the one treasure which was not to be surrendered. A possible unit of mneasurement of 1.10 meters, or 36.08 ft was
obtained from a careful examination of sizes. It appears as if it could have been subdivided according to the decimal system, the same way as the numbers in Kechwa. (Place-names in this region are Kechwa.) If this unit or a fraction or multiple of it were'used as a basis, would
have to be investigated.
In ancient cultures of the East the unit of
measurement was in
vested with magic sinificance. It was carefully preserved, sometimes scratched on temple-walls. Staff, sceptre, vara, symbols of power and dominion, could have been derived from measuring-rods, instru ments of land-distribution, architecture, and perhaps even of astro
nomy. lt may be possible to demonstrate that time-intervals were laid
down in lengths, serving as measures for history and calendar-science.
lf that was the case in Nazca, once the basic unit and its subdivisions
were established without any doubt, we might be able to begin with
the deciphering of the mysterious drawings.

otras, agrupadas simetricamente a ambos lados.

Another kind of figures is found on steep slopcs. From the ground they are practically unrecognizable. They consist partly of light surfaces. Eycs and mouth are often marked by heaps of stones.
The igure is about 98 feet high. The study of the straight lines beside it could perhaps throw light on its significance. The owl-man appcars also in Peruvian pottery. Figures on slopes may be more primitive because of the stecpness of the incline, or lse they could belong to an carlier cultural level. The figures at the left could bc images of the sun, the owlman perhaps represents the moon.
A human figure about 65 feet high on a spur at the end of a plateau.
The figure has a hat or a burden on his head, a whiplike object in his right hand and perhaps an animal or bird on his left arm. On the enlarged
picture appcars what scems to be the head of an owl. While climbing
around on slopes one frequently comes across similar igurcs whose shapes
can only be recognized from a helicopter.
Almost the same shape of a figure has been found on several slopes.

It is a remarkable fact that giant ground-drawings have been found in different countrics. Large carthworks or mounds in the shapes of birds, bcars and decr, most of thcm about the same size as some of the
Nazca-figures, have been photographed from the air and studied in
the west and southcast of the United States. "The largest of them. n
snakealmost a mile long is slightlyshorter than the largest geometric surface of Nazca.
An easily removed layer of a darker colour over a lighter subsoil
underneath induced people in the south of England to create huge effigies of horses. Through removing a thin layer of topsoil and grass from the underlying chalk, these giant horses stand out in brilliant white on the grassy slopes of Wiltshire and Kent. There are eight of them altogether. For innumerable generations people have continued
cutting off the invading grass at the edges, preserving those impor
tant remnants of a past cultural stage. This reverent attitude towards
the past should be an example to other countries, especially Peru where, as in Nazca, great cultural documents of a highly evolved bygone civilization are to be preserved. In the Western deserts of the United States there are places which in climate and consistency of soil are very similar to the Nazca
tablelands. And in the same manner as there, large images have been imprinted on asurface of stones the colour of oiled rust', whose removal left exposed the lighter colour underneath. It was done however by a primitive people who never reached the technical and artistical perfection of their southern relatives. Dozens of these
hgures, among them a spiral, have been found between the Canadian
border and southernmost California. A detailed study of measures and directions of the figures found in the Californian deserts and in Britain might, as in Nazca, reveal
their hidden significance.
88
Although there could be different opinions about the Nazca-drawings and their meaning, one thing is certain, and that is that the figures
give evidence of the fact that carly Peruvians have attained a hitherto
unsuspected cultural level. The process of planning and converting
one scale into another presupposes a highly developcd faculty for abstract thinking, which at least part of the population must have DOssessed and which we would never expcct in a primitive pcople. For once we have to leave aside the study of thOse elements which
are common to primitive art, as there are totemism, religion, cere
monial and ritual usages and dedicate our attention to means and
methods employed by the makers of the great drawings. We have to try topenetrate into their minds and follow the struggle for perfection and their way to reach it. We should look into every detail of these
mysterious writings and in the manner of graphologists draw con clusions as to character and faculties of the writer. Patience and ex
actitude characterize the authors of these giant documents, which with their repetitions, corrections and erasures give testimony of the
struggle to make them fit the purpose for which they were made. One of the most important tasks of prehistoric study lies before us.
It can only be accomplished by painstaking and accurate investigation
of sizes and directions and the manifold combinations of basic ele ments. A long way lies before us. Unlimited time and patience are needed in this work, which in the end will lead us to a new under
standing of prehistoric man and his way of thinking.

pensar.
