G e t t i n g S ta r t e d Ready to draw Garfield and his friends? First, you’ll need some simple drawing tools. Start with a pencil, an eraser (so you can fix any mistakes), a pencil sharpener, and paper. When you’re finished with your drawing, you can color it with crayons, colored pencils, or markers (be sure to have lots of orange).

REMEMBER TO GET A SNACK TOO . . . DRAWING CAN WORK UP AN APPETITE!

4

QUICK TIP Relax, stay loose, and let your arm and hand move freely as you draw.

5

G ar fi el d ’s H an d som e Fac e Let’s start with a front view of Garfield’s face. Grab a pencil and an eraser, and follow these simple steps.

Front View

1. Start with a basic oval shape. Draw a

vertical line dividing the oval in half. Then draw a horizontal line a quarter of the way up so it looks as if it’s going around the oval. These are your guidelines.

3. Finish the ears, and add a line to

give Garfield his famous double chin. Add his whiskers, eyelids, and two dots for his pupils.

6

2. Draw a circle for Garfield’s nose

where the vertical and horizontal lines cross. Then draw two ovals for his eyes. Give him a nice big smile. The ends of the smile should reach halfway up his eyes.

4. Clean up the guidelines with an eraser, and add the final stripes and dots.

Side View 1. As with the front view, start with a large oval. Add the horizontal and vertical lines off-center (toward the side you want Garfield to face).

2. Add the eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. This time,

notice that everything is angled toward the side.

3. Fill out Garfield’s face, and note how the chin and cheek lines overlap in the same direction.

I'm not just another pretty face!

4. Clean up the guidelines with an

eraser, and add the final stripes and dots. You see more stripes on the side of the head that’s turned toward you.

7

G a r fi e ld ’s B o dy Now that we’ve mastered Garfield’s face, let’s draw his body. Again, use a pencil and an eraser (and don’t worry about mistakes).

Sitting

1. Start with two ovals. Divide

the head oval with horizontal and vertical lines as before. Make the body oval flat on the bottom.

3. Fill in the paws, and round out the body to give Garfield his famous pear shape. Fill in facial details as before.

8

2. Place circles along the bottom line of

the body to position the feet and tail.

4. Clean up the guidelines, and add Garfield’s stripes.

Standing

1. Again, use two ovals for the head and body. Center Garfield’s long tube-shaped legs under the body oval. Then add his feet as shown.

3. Fill in the details of his fingers and toes, and notice how the shape of his heel changes.

2. Think of Garfield’s hands as one

entire shape so the fingers don’t get out of proportion. Draw circles for Garfield’s hands and arms. Then add his tail.

4. Add the final details. Include some shadow.

Be sure to draw lots of pizza for me to eat!

9

Pl a y

Garfield may be lazy (he likes taking a brisk nap), but the slow-moving cat does occasionally spring into action (most often at dinnertime).

Sleeping Scrunch up the body oval to give Garfield a cozy look while he’s sleeping.

Walking When you put Garfield’s feet, hands, or tail behind his body, it gives your drawing a 3-D feeling. Curve the tail in this action pose.

10

Running Tiny pupils will make Garfield look frightened or surprised.

Chewing is my favorite exercise!

11

The M an y M oo ds o f G ar fi el d Happy, sad, mad, or excited—Garfield has an expression for every situation. Now that you know the basics, try drawing Garfield’s many moods. Try these poses.

13

O d ie You’ve become an expert at drawing Garfield, so let’s draw his favorite canine companion. Have fun—just watch out for dog breath!

front view

1. Start with a circle, and divide it with horizontal and vertical lines as shown.

3. Draw Odie’s ears as shown. Add the final details, including the highlight on Odie’s nose.

14

2. Center the nose where the lines overlap,

add the eyes above it, and change the face shape as shown. Note how the cheeks line up on the horizontal line.

4. Clean up your sketch, and then fill in the nose and neck shadow.

 

Hey! Who's the star of this book?

15



J on Jon Arbuckle is Garfield and Odie’s owner and food giver (with Garfield, that’s a full-time job). Sharpen your pencils, and let’s start drawing.

Face

1. Start by stacking a circle over an

oval, but don’t center them. The dotted line shows how to line up the shapes so they become the back of Jon’s head.

3. Jon’s hair always has the same amount of bumps.

16

2. Add eyes as shown. The straight

guideline down the middle should help you line up his eyes, neck, and the top of his head.

4. Finish your drawing by adding a

few stray hairs, erase your guidelines, and then fill in the shadows.

Standing

1. Use an oval to give Jon his potbellied slouch.

2. Use a white line to separate

Jon’s two black legs.

Humans are great! Every cat should own one!

17

Po o k y Pooky is Garfield’s best friend (teddy bears can really keep a secret).

Face

1. Start with a basic oval, but

keep it flattened on the bottom as shown. Draw your horizontal and vertical guidelines.

3. Extend the top of his head

between the ears, and add his “fur.” Add notches to the tops of his ears in the shape of backward Zs.

18

2. Add two double circles to the top

of the oval for Pooky’s ears. Be sure to leave some space between the ears.

4.

Complete your drawing as shown. The lines at the bottom of his face shouldn’t touch.

body

1. Pooky is a stuffed toy, so he doesn’t

move by himself. Keep that in mind while you are drawing him.

2. Add shadows as

shown to give the teddy bear shape and volume.

Friends may come and go, but a teddy bear is forever!

19

A rl en e Arlene is Garfield’s longtime female friend. They enjoy quiet nights on the fence and moonlit dinners at the local dumpster.

Face

1. Just like Garfield, Arlene’s head starts with

an oval and horizontal and vertical guidelines.

3. Give Arlene’s head a little extra height by

extending the sides of the oval up to her ears. Use another oval to create her lower lip. 20

2. Add her nose, eyes, ears, and a curved

line at the bottom of the oval for her smile.

4. Finish her ears just as you did Garfield’s, and then add Arlene’s eyelashes.

body

1. The oval for Arlene’s body

is about halfway between her head and feet.

2. Bring down the oval

at her back so she is not too round.

3. Arlene’s fingers are

made from small ovals.

I like Arlene almost as much as I like pizza!

21

N ermal Nermal calls himself the world’s cutest kitten. He’s always bright and cheerful (which Garfield always finds annoying).

Face

1. Again, start by drawing the oval and guidelines to start Nermal’s head.

3. Notice the difference between Nermal’s ears and those of Garfield and Arlene.

22

2. Position Nermal’s nose, eyes, ears, and

big smile as shown.

4. The stripes and eyelashes are what give Nermal his world’s-cutest-kitten look. Add them last.

body 1. Nermal’s legs are not as long as Garfield’s.

3. Notice that Nermal’s leg

doesn’t get longer, but being on his toes does give him extra height.

2. Nermal is almost always bright

and cheerful. (That’s one of the reasons Garfield hates him!)

4. Be careful not to mix up the

overlap of arm, ear, tail, and leg, or you will flatten out the 3-D effect.

Nermal is soooo cute. I hate cute!

23

The G an g ’s A ll H er e Try drawing these group scenes. Take your time, and don’t be afraid to use your eraser. Remember to start with basic shapes such as ovals, circles, and tubes before adding details.

24

No matter how big the group, I'm always the center of attention
