PREFACE This volume, like its two predecessors, Euripidea (Leiden, 1994) and Euripidea Altera (Leiden, 1996), is a companion to the Loeb Euripides, explaining some of the readings I adopt on the left-hand pages and some of my translations on the right-hand ones. The present volume covers the end of Loeb volume four and the whole of volumes five and six (lphigenia in Tauris, Ion, Helen, Phoenissae, Orestes, Bacchae, lphigenia Aulidensis, Rhesus). As I did in the earlier volumes, I have intercalated references to earlier discussions of mine. Unless otherwise noted, the lemmata at the head of the discussions and any apparatus is Diggle's, whose text makes the most convenient point of departure. I have incorporated his later corrections (see his Euripidea 518-23) into the apparatus. There are, as before, debts to acknowledge. Parts of this book were written during a year of full-time research in 1996-7 made possible by a grant from the Division of Research of the National Endowment for the Humanities. I am grateful to the Endowment for supporting this unfashionable and un-trendy kind of research. I am also grateful to the Master and Fellows of Balliol College, Oxford for electing me to a Visiting Fellowship for that year, which allowed me to spend twelve months in close proximity to several people who have edited or otherwise explicated tragedy with credit. I am particularly grateful to Jasper Griffin, Martin West, Charles Willink, James Diggle, and Chris Pelling for viva voce discussion or useful written comment. Martin West invited me to join him in teaching a seminar on lphigenia Aulidensis in Hilary Term of 1997, and I thank him and the other participants for lively discussion of the many problems of that play. A second period of work on the text was 2000-1, when I received a semester's leave from the University of Virginia and was elected to a Visiting Fellowship at Trinity College, Cambridge. I am immensely grateful to the Master and Fellows for their kindness and generosity. I benefited enormously from discussions with Roger Dawe, James

Diggle, Eric Handley, and Charles Willink. For help on particular chapters at a still later stage I am grateful to John Gibert and Hugh Lloyd-Jones. Naturally, none of those named are implicated in my errors. Charlottesville, Virginia
