Preface

Energy Management and Conservation is the area which requires general awareness among the people. As the motto says, “Energy conserved is energy produced,” energy conservation may be regarded as an alternative energy source. Basically, the Energy Audit report leads to identification of Energy Conservation Opportunities (ECOs). The implementation strategies should always consider the technical feasibilities as well as economical viabilities of the proposals. Energy management is a multidisciplinary subject. In India, though a lot has been discussed about Energy Management and Energy Conservation in various conferences/seminars/workshops of both national and international levels, since the oil crisis of 1975, the significance of energy conservation has not gained its due importance till the Energy Conservation Act 2001 was passed by the Government of India. The requirement of certified energy managers and energy auditors has become mandatory. The subject of energy management which was in the curriculum of the graduate courses has slowly drifted into undergraduate courses also. But unfortunately, there is no single textbook in this field catering to the needs of student community. The staff of the centre had the opportunity of conducting energy audits of different types of industries in and around Hyderabad. With the experience gained through the teaching of the subject of Energy Management for M.tech. (Energy Systems) students of the Centre, conduct of training courses for In-Plant Engineers of A.P. on Energy Management, delivering special invited talks in the area of energy management at some national /international seminars/workshops held at Hyderabad during the past two decades, the authors preferred to share their experience with the readers. An attempt is made to present essential, useful and practical principles of Electrical Energy Management without going into a detailed analysis. The principles of economics needed to analyze the economical viability of the proposals for the energy conservation schemes are also dealt with examples in this book. Reports of some case studies are also presented. The authors are thankful to the concerned authorities who were instrumental in the initiation and supporting the activities of the School of Energy, (later renamed as Centre for Energy Studies) at J.N.T.U., Hyderabad, with the core staff pooled from the Departments of Mechanical and Electrical

Engineering, Dr. K.V.K. Nehru, Dr. P. Venkataseshaiah and Dr. P. Rajasekharam respectively. We are thankful to our former colleagues for their valuable advice and help in conducting energy audits and later in developing the manuscript of this book. We also thank the students of M.Tech. (Energy Systems) of our centre who conducted energy audits and their reports have been modified for presentation as case studies in this book.
