Acknowledgments
This book is the result of an intellectual adventure that began in 199 3. It would not have come into existence but for the extraordinary support of the professors I interviewed: Hayden White, Hans Kellner, Franklin R. Ankersrnit, Georg G. Iggers, Jorn Ritsen, JcrzyTopolski, Arthur C. Danto, Lionel Gossman, Peter Burke, Stephen Bann. They found time to talk with me. I would like to thank each and every one of them not only for their time but also for their tolerance and patience. For me the meetings and interviews were the precious source ofunconventional learning. They were also the source of inspiration and unfixgettable experiences. I would also like to express my gratitude to Professor Allan Megill and Professor Lynn Hunt for writing the introduction and postscript to my collection of interviews. I am particularly grateful to my master professor, Jerzy Topolski, and to Professor Ankersmit and Professor Kellner for all their help and advice. It sustained my enthusiasm. I also want to thank the Institute of History of Adam Mickiewicz University and the faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Groningen for their financial contributions. warm thanks are due to Marta Dubrzynska and Bartosz Fasiecki, who carried out my graphical project of the manuscript design. I am also grate ful for David Slattery's helpful comments and proofreading and for Pawel Ozdowski's translation. Jonathan Megill helped review the page proofa.
