Preface
The common theme that unites the contributors to this book is their commitment to an integrative view of developmental phenomena, one that highlights the relationships among different aspects of development and the reciprocal nature of relations between people and their environments. The articles are based on papers presented at a conference called to explore what we have called a developmental-interaction point of view-an approach to developmental psychology and education that stresses these interactive and reciprocal relations. It is becoming commonplace to express discomfort with recent preoccupation with cognition, a preoccupation that has led to a narrow, even exclusive, focus on cognitive phenomena at the expense of other aspects of development. Currently there are many signs of renewed attention in theory and research to social and emotional development and their interrelations with cognition. At the same time, there has been a new appreciation of the importance of contextual influences, and of the interdependency of individuals and their environments. The pursuit of an integrative view of development seems particularly timely. The conference that led to this work was initiated to bring together a group from diverse professional backgrounds who share certain basic assumptions but view development from different perspectives. The goal of the conference, as of this volume, was to foster interchange and the elaboration of an interactionist view. The group represents several disciplines concerned with developmental phenomena--
