NOTE TO THE STUDENT This is a character text for Chinese Primer. It corresponds, part for part, to the romanized lessons. Each lesson is presented in both the traditional and the simplified forms. The texts in simplified forms follow this preface immediately, and are arranged in horizontal rows, in the manner of books printed in the People's Republic of China. The texts in traditional forms begin at the other end of the book, which is the front from the traditional Chinese point of view. The characters are arranged in vertical columns, which also is the traditional manner. To help develop correct habits in the use of neutral tones, we have used slightly smaller characters for neutral-tone syllables in units I through III. From Unit IV on, we expect the student's habits .to be good enough not to need this aid. Certain characters, such as Iff] . & .fe^> -f- a r e almost always in the neutral tone, as described in the Grammar Notes. Therefore they have not been printed in the smaller type. This volume also includes, at the other end, an introduction in Chinese that is intended for teachers, especially those teachers who are native speakers of Chinese.
