Introduction
To celebrate Chinese New Year at home with home-cooked meals, you do not have to go the extra mile to prepare a great menu. You can do it without a sweat if you prepare your menu early and go grocery shopping one week before the event. The recipes that Chinese people love are simple and made with love. They are not difficult recipes that you will need hours to make in the kitchen. If you look at the 30 recipes in this book that Chinese people would love on their table during the celebration of Chinese New Year, they are comfort food, simple cooking method, and mostly quick recipes. They love to make their dishes quickly with as few ingredients as possible. There will be some recipes that may need a long list of ingredients, but that is a rare case. Most of the recipes need less than 6-7 ingredients to make. They love rice flour, almonds, red bean paste, steamed cakes, steamed buns, chicken, pork, and noodles. You will see an abundance of the ingredients and dishes throughout the book because this is what they love, and this is what they use to celebrate their New Year. So, try making your menu around the
recipes, and have a wonderful Chinese New Year.
Authentic Chinese Steamed Fish
Chinese cuisine is all about eating healthy but still delicious. Chinese New Year celebration will come to a full circle when there is this delicious steamed fish dish on the table. Preparation Time: 5 minutes Cooking Time: 1.5 hours Serves: 2 Ingredients: 550 grams sea bass 2 tbsp. seasoned soy sauce 1 1-inch piece ginger, sliced 1 tsp. sesame oil 1/2 tsp. Sichuan peppercorn 1 cup green onion, chopped 2 dried chili peppers 2 tbsp. Shaoxing wine
1 tbsp. peanut oil Instructions: Clean the fish but keep the head on. Wash and drain properly. Rinse off completely. Add half the green onions to a steaming plate. Place the fish on top of the green onions. Add some ginger slices and green onions inside the cavity of the seabass. Add the wine on top of the fish. Steam the fish for 8 minutes. In a skillet, add the peanut oil and chili peppers and fry for 30 seconds. Add the peppercorn and stir for 20 seconds. Discard the spices and add the oil on top of the fish. Serve with green onions and ginger on top.
Suan Cai Yu (Sichuan Fish with Pickled Mustard Greens)
Chinese love fish, and each of their dish of it is unique from the others. This unique fish dish is perfect to celebrate Chinese New Year. It has so many flavors that anyone who is trying it for the first time will get mesmerized. Preparation Time: 15 minutes Cooking Time: 50 minutes Serves: 6 Ingredients: 1 (6 pounds) catfish 2 slices ginger 6 cups chicken stock 400 grams Sichuan pickled mustard greens, sliced Salt and white pepper to taste 4 dried chili peppers 2 egg whites
8 cloves garlic, halved 1 leek, sliced 1 tsp. sugar 1 tsp. Sichuan peppercorn 1 tbsp. Shaoxing wine 2 tbsp. potato starch 2 tbsp. peanut oil 3 tbsp. doubanjiang Instructions: Cut the catfish in fillets and cut into 2-inch cubes. Marinate them using egg whites, cornstarch, salt and white pepper. Let them sit for 20 minutes. Next, in a skillet, heat the oil and fry the green onions, ginger, chili pepper and garlic. Cook for 2 minutes and add doubanjiang. Stir for 2 minutes. Then, stir in the jalapenos and Sichuan pickles and stir for 7 minutes. Pour in some Shaoxing wine. Stir for 1 minute. Then, pour in the chicken stock and cook on high heat for 5 minutes. Finally, add the fish bones and head into the mixture and simmer for 20 minutes. Remove the fish bones and head. Then, add the sugar and cook for 2 minutes. Serve hot.
Braised Pork Ribs
Indeed, no Chinese New Year celebration is complete without a proper meat dish unless you are vegan! This is a complete dish with a delicious gravy, vegetables and aromatic meat. Preparation Time: 15 minutes Cooking Time: 2 hours Serves: 4 - 5 Ingredients: 1 slab (4 lb.) pork ribs, halved crosswise 1 whole nutmeg 3 tbsp. light soy sauce 5 cloves 20g onion, halved lengthwise 1 tbsp. dark soy sauce 1/4 cup Shaoxing wine 2 tbsp. granulated sugar
2 celery stalks, cut into thick pieces 2 tsp. salt 1 2-inch piece ginger, sliced 2 star anise pods 2 tbsp. cornstarch 1/2 lb. green beans 2 carrots, cut into thick pieces 2 sprigs rosemary Instructions: In a pot, add the pork and cold water, so the ribs remain covered in water. Cook on medium high heat for 5 minutes. Add the ginger, cloves, green onion, star anise and nutmeg. Add a lid and cook on medium low heat for 40 minutes. Pour in the light and dark soy sauce and mix. Add the seasonings and cook for another 40 minutes. Add all the veggies and cook for 10 minutes. Combine some water with cornstarch and mix. Pour in the pot and stir continuously. Add the rosemary sprigs. Cook for 5 minutes and serve.
Chicken Lettuce Wraps
These serve as a great party appetizer. They look good, and they taste spicy and flavorful. The green bed behind the browned chicken is a feast for eyes too. Preparation Time: 5 minutes Cooking Time: 20 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients: 1 lb. ground chicken 3 tbsp. hoisin sauce 1 onion, diced 2 tbsp. rice wine vinegar 1 tbsp. Sriracha 2 tbsp. soy sauce 1 tsp. sesame oil 1 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil 1/2 can water chestnuts Kosher salt and pepper to taste 2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tbsp. minced ginger 2 green onions, sliced Large leafy lettuce Instructions: Drain the chestnuts and slice them. In a bowl, combine the sriracha, hoisin sauce, sesame oil, soy sauce and rice wine vinegar. Mix well and set aside. In a pan, add the oil and fry the onion for 5 minutes. Add the ginger and garlic and stir for 1 minute. Add the chicken and cook for 5 minutes. Add the soy sauce mixture and stir for 2 minutes. Add the chestnuts, salt, pepper and green onions. Stuff the lettuce and serve.
Ginger Chicken Pot Stickers
Who doesn’t like dumplings? This version is slightly charred, so it tastes extra special and perfect to celebrate Chinese New Year. Preparation Time: 20 minutes Cooking Time: 25 hours Serves: 60 wrappers Ingredients: 1 lb. ground chicken 1 egg, beaten 2 cloves garlic, grated 2 tbsp. soy sauce 1/4 cup chicken broth 2 tsp. sesame oil 2 tsp. minced ginger 2 green onions, sliced Olive oil to frying 60 dumpling wrappers
For dipping sauce 4 tbsp. soy sauce 3 tbsp. rice wine vinegar 3 tbsp. chopped scallions Instructions: Mix together the ground chicken, garlic, broth, soy sauce, green onions, sesame oil, egg and ginger. Mix well. Use 1 spoonful of chicken mix to fill each wonton wrapper and fold them properly. Steam the dumplings and fry them with olive oil until they are slightly charred. Combine the rice wine vinegar, scallions and soy sauce. Serve them hot with the sauce.
Szechuan Chicken
Szechuan chicken is something that not only Chinese people but also people around the world love because of its technique, texture and flavor. To celebrate Chinese New Year, it is only mandatory to have this dish on the table. Preparation Time: 10 minutes Cooking Time: 25 minutes Serves: 2 Ingredients: 1 lb. chicken breast, cubed into 1 inch Oil for frying 1 tbsp. minced ginger Salt and pepper to taste 1/4 cup cornstarch 3 cloves garlic, minced 2 tsp. sesame oil 2 tbsp. chili garlic sauce 1/2 cup soy sauce
2 tbsp. rice wine vinegar 6 dried chili peppers 2 bell peppers, chopped 1 tbsp. sesame seeds Instructions: In a plastic bag, add the chicken cubes. Add the cornstarch, salt and pepper. Mix well. Add some oil in a pot and fry the chicken cubes until they are golden. Heat the canola oil in a skillet and fry the garlic and ginger for 1 minute. Add the bell pepper and dried chili pepper and cook for 5 minutes. Combine the sesame oil, rice wine vinegar, soy sauce and chili garlic sauce in a bowl. Add the mix and chicken to the skillet. Stir for 5 minutes. Add the sesame seeds on top and serve hot.
Egg Drop Soup
This egg drop soup is a classic favorite to Chinese people. It is simple to make, and when you have a large audience coming, you can easily make it at home. Preparation Time: 5 minutes Cooking Time: 20 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients: 6 cups chicken broth 1 tsp. sesame oil 1/4 tsp. ground ginger 1 tbsp. cornstarch 4 eggs, well beaten 2 tbsp. green onions, sliced Kosher salt and black pepper to taste 1 tbsp. soy sauce
Instructions: Boil the broth with ginger. Add the soy sauce and cornstarch and whisk until well combined. Add the sesame oil and cook for 5 minutes. Add the eggs and seasoning. Cook for 2 minutes and stir for 3 minutes. Serve with green onions on top.
Crunchy Mandarin Orange-Chicken Salad
This colorful and crunchy chicken salad is perfect as a side dish for your Chinese New Year celebration. It looks very fancy and beautiful. Preparation Time: 10 minutes Cooking Time: No Cooking Required Serves: 5 - 6 Ingredients: 1/2 can mandarin oranges, drained 3 cups iceberg lettuce, chopped 1/2 cup shredded carrot 2 cups shredded chicken, cooked 1 packet instant ramen, crushed 1/4 cup sliced almonds 1/3 cup sliced green onions 2 cups shredded red cabbage Dressing
1 tbsp. sesame oil 2 tbsp. soy sauce 1 clove garlic, minced 1 tbsp. hoisin sauce 2 tbsp. honey 3 tbsp. rice wine vinegar 1/4 cup olive oil 1 tsp. minced ginger Instructions: In a container, combine the dressing ingredients and mix well. Set aside for now. In a salad bowl, add the chicken, carrot, lettuce, ramen, cabbage, mandarin oranges, almond and green onions. Toss well and add the dressing. Coat everything together and serve.
Wonton Soup
Wonton soup has always been a classic favorite for Chinese people. It is only fair that it is needed to celebrate Chinese New Year. Preparation Time: 15 minutes Cooking Time: 20 minutes Serves: 6 Ingredients: For the wontons 2/3 lb. ground chicken 2 tsp. soy sauce 1/4 cup water 1 tsp. grated ginger 1 tsp. rice wine vinegar 1/2 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes 1 clove garlic 1 tsp. cornstarch 2 tsp. chives, sliced
1/2 tsp. sesame oil 12 wonton wrappers For the soup 4 cups chicken broth 2 tbsp. scallions to garnish 1/4 tsp. sesame oil 2 tsp. soy sauce 1 2-inch piece ginger, minced 2 cloves garlic, smashed Instructions: Combine the ground chicken with soy sauce, garlic, chives, ginger, vinegar, sesame oil, cornstarch and red pepper flakes. Add 1 teaspoon of the chicken mixture into each wonton wrapper and fold them as you please. Seal the edges carefully with rubbing water. In a saucepan, add the soup ingredients and bring it to boil. Add the wontons and cook for 10 minutes. Add green onions on top and serve hot.
Skinny Panda Express Chow Mein
This is a very easy but delicious chow mein recipe to celebrate Chinese New Year. The ingredients are too simple and perfect to cater to a big number of audience. Preparation Time: 5 minutes Cooking Time: 15 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients: 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 lb. rice noodles 1 onion, diced 1 tbsp. olive oil 2 stalks celery, sliced 1/2 cup soy sauce 1 tsp. ground ginger
1/2 head cabbage, shredded Instructions: Cook the rice noodles for 4 minutes in boiling water. Once done, run them through a sieve. In another small bowl, mix together the ginger, soy sauce and garlic. Heat the oil in a skillet and fry the onion for 2 minutes. Add the celery and shredded cabbage and stir for 5 minutes. Add the cooked rice noodles and sauce mix. Stir for 2 minutes and serve hot.
Kung Pao Chicken
Kung Pao chicken is full of aromas and delicious flavors. It looks amazing when served because of the glazy sauce. If you use a colorful mix of bell pepper, it will look better. Preparation Time: 20 minutes Cooking Time: 25 minutes Serves: 2 Ingredients: 1/4 cup soy sauce, divided 1/3 cup chopped peanuts 1 tbsp. rice wine 1 bell pepper, chopped 1 lb. chicken breast, chopped 1 tbsp. hoisin sauce 1 tbsp. vegetable oil 2 tbsp. apple cider vinegar
2 tsp. sesame oil 1 tsp. garlic chili pastes 1/4 cup chicken broth 2 cloves garlic, minced 3 tsp. cornstarch, divided 3 green onions, finely sliced Instructions: Combine the rice wine, 1 tablespoon of soy sauce and 1 teaspoon of cornstarch in a bowl. Mix well and coat the chicken and let it marinate for nearly 15 minutes. To make the sauce, combine the rest of the cornstarch, remaining soy sauce, hoisin sauce, chicken broth, sesame oil, apple cider vinegar and garlic chili paste. Mix well. In a skillet, heat the vegetable oil and fry the chicken for 8 minutes. Transfer the chicken to a plate. Add the bell pepper to the skillet and stir for 4 minutes. Add the garlic and sauce and stir for 3 minutes. Add the chicken again and cook for 4 minutes. Add the peanuts and green onions on top and serve hot.
Flat Noodle Shrimp
Chinese people love noodles, and combining them with proteins and some veggies uplifts the taste of this dish. I used egg rice noodles here, but feel free to choose your favorite kind of them. Preparation Time: 20 minutes Cooking Time: 25 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients: 2 ½ cups egg rice noodles 1 ½ cups shrimp, cleaned, peeled 1/2 cup green onions, cut into large chunks 2 tbsp. sesame oil 1 tbsp. sesame seeds 1/3 cup soy sauce 2 carrots, cut into thin strands ½ cup shredded cabbage
1 tbsp. hoisin sauce 1 tbsp. apple cider vinegar 2 cloves garlic, minced Salt and pepper to taste Instructions: Boil the egg rice noodles in boiling water for only 5 minutes. Drain them and keep aside for now. In a large skillet, heat the sesame oil and fry the shrimp for 3 minutes with a pinch of salt and pepper. Transfer the shrimp to a plate. In the same skillet, add the garlic and fry until golden. Add the cabbage, carrot, hoisin sauce and soy sauce and stir for 2 minutes. Add the boiled noodles, shrimp, salt, pepper, green onions and apple cider vinegar. Stir for 5 minutes and serve hot.
Perfect Grilled Fish
Chinese people love fish the same way they love vegetables and fresh ingredients. This grilled fish dish is juicy from the center but slightly charred and crispy from the outside. The zesty lemon juice adds more flavor. Preparation Time: 20 minutes Cooking Time: 25 minutes Serves: 2 Ingredients: 2 bass fillets, with skin 1 tsp. chili powder 1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper Kosher salt to taste 1 tsp. dried oregano 1 tsp. olive oil ½ tsp. black pepper 1 tsp. lemon juice
Lime wedges, for serving Instructions: Heat your griller and add the olive oil on the grate. In a bowl, combine the oregano, cayenne, chili powder, salt and black pepper and mix well. Add the fish fillets and coat well. Let them sit for 10 minutes. Grill them for 2 minutes per side. Serve hot with lime wedges.
Sriracha Shrimp with Noodles
Here is another noodle recipe to create during Chinese New Year because Chinese people love noodles. This recipe is extra-ordinary because of the Sriracha flavor. Feel free to add your favorite vegetables like peas, carrots and broccoli here, too. Preparation Time: 10 minutes Cooking Time: 25 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients: 2 ½ cups Udon noodles Juice of 1 lime 3 tbsp. sesame oil, divided 2 small cucumbers, sliced 1 ½ cups medium shrimp 1 red bell pepper, sliced 6 tbsp. soy sauce 6 green onions, sliced 1/4 cup sriracha
1 yellow bell pepper, sliced Lime wedges, for serving Instructions: Boil the udon noodles in boiling water for only 5 minutes. Run the noodle through a sieve and keep aside. Next, to make the sauce, mix together the soy sauce, Sriracha and lime juice in a bowl. In a pan, heat 1 tablespoon of the sesame oil and fry the shrimp for 3 minutes. Add it to a plate. Then, add the rest of the sesame oil and fry the bell peppers for 2 minutes. Add the green onions and cucumbers and stir for 2 minutes. Add the boiled noodles, shrimp and sauce. Cook for 3 minutes. Serve hot with lime.
Fruit Salad
When you have too many fancy dishes during the celebration of Chinese New Year, you also need something refreshing and light to complement the heavy dishes. This salad is perfect for serving on the purpose. Preparation Time: 8 minutes Cooking Time: No Cooking Required Serves: 4 Ingredients: For the dressing 1/4 cup honey 4 tbsp. orange juice ½ tsp. grated lemon zest For the salad 2 apples, chopped 6 oz. blueberries
2 cups grapes 3 kiwis, sliced 1 lb. strawberries 1 orange, cut into wedges 1 mango, chopped 6 oz. raspberries Instructions: Combine the lemon zest, honey and orange juice in a small bowl. In another bowl, combine the blueberries, strawberries, grapes, mangoes, apples, kiwis and oranges. Add the dressing and toss well. Serve.
Beef and Broccoli with Red Peppers
This dish looks very colorful and complements perfectly when you serve it with jasmine rice. You can use yellow pepper here, too, if you want to make the dish more colorful. Preparation Time: 5 minutes Cooking Time: 25 minutes Serves: 6 Ingredients: 1 lb. skirt steak, sliced 1/2 cup soy sauce 3 tbsp. brown sugar 1 tbsp. cornstarch 1/2 cup chicken broth 1 red pepper, sliced 2 tbsp. white vinegar 3 cloves garlic, minced
1 tbsp. ginger, grated Kosher salt to taste 1 broccoli, cut into florets 1 tbsp. sriracha 1 tbsp. sesame oil 2 tbsp. canola oil, divided Instructions: First, in a bowl, combine the soy sauce, sriracha, chicken broth, sesame oil, white vinegar, ginger, brown sugar, cornstarch and garlic. Heat half the canola oil in a skillet and cook the skirt steak for 4 minutes per side. Next, add the rest of the canola oil and stir in the broccoli. Stir for 2 minutes and add the red pepper. Cook for 2 minutes. Pour in some water and cover with a lid. Then, cook on high heat for 2 minutes. Add the sriracha sauce and simmer for 5 minutes. Serve hot with rice.
Baked Honey Sesame Chicken
These chicken breasts turn out very juicy and sweet with the seared chicken outing; they taste delicious. Adding sesame seeds on top makes them look good and taste good too. Preparation Time: 5 minutes Cooking Time: 40 minutes Serves: 3 - 4 Ingredients: 1 lb. chicken breasts 1/4 cup soy sauce 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 tsp. sriracha 2 tbsp. sesame oil Salt to taste Juice of 1 lime 1 tbsp. cornstarch
3 tbsp. honey Sesame seeds for garnish Scallions for garnish Instructions: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Combine the soy sauce, garlic, honey, sriracha and lime juice. Mix well. Add half of the sesame oil and the cornstarch. Remove the skin and bones of your chicken breasts. Season them using salt. In a pan, heat the remaining oil and fry the chicken for 4 minutes per side. Add the honey glaze and toss well. Bake for 25 minutes. Add scallions and sesame seeds on top and serve hot.
Beef & Broccoli Noodles
Chinese people love noodles, they love vegetables like broccoli and they enjoy pairing them with meat occasionally, like for New Year’s Eve. In this recipe, you will get mushrooms, too, to make it more special. Preparation Time: 10 minutes Cooking Time: 30 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients: 1 head broccoli, cut into florets 12 oz. wide rice noodles Juice of 2 limes 3/4 lb. flank steak 3 cloves garlic, minced 3 tbsp. sesame oil, divided 1/3 cup soy sauce 1 tbsp. sriracha
1 tsp. honey 1 tbsp. cornstarch 8 oz. baby bella mushrooms, sliced Instructions: Slice the steak against the grain. Cook the flat noodles in salted water for 5 minutes. Run the flat noodles through a sieve. Combine the garlic, soy sauce, lime juice, honey, Sriracha and 2 tablespoons of sesame oil in a bowl. Mix well and add in cornstarch. Mix well. Heat the rest of the sesame oil and fry the steak for 5 minutes on each side. Add the mushroom and broccoli and stir for 2 minutes. Pour in 2 tablespoons of water and stir for 4 minutes. Add in your sriracha mix and stir for 3 minutes. Add the boiled noodles and cook for 2 minutes. Serve hot with lime wedges on the side.
Chinese Braised Chicken with Chestnuts
Talk about a fancy dish for your Chinese New Year celebration! This dish will do it for you. It is made with simple chicken, fresh chestnuts, shiitake mushrooms and star anise to give it a beautiful aroma. Preparation Time: 10 minutes Cooking Time: 1 hour Serves: 6 Ingredients: 2 1/2 pounds chicken thighs 1 cup fresh chestnuts 3 scallions, chopped 4 tbsp. soy sauce 8 shitake mushrooms 1 tbsp. olive oil 2 tbsp. honey 1 star anise
2 tsp. ginger, sliced 1/4 cup dry sherry Instructions: Coat the chicken in half of the soy sauce. Let it marinate for about 15 minutes. In a pan, fry the ginger for 1 minute. Add the scallions and toss for another minute. Add the chicken thighs. Then, cook until they are brown. Add the soy sauce, star anise, sherry, honey and shitake mushrooms and mix well. Simmer for 20 minutes and add the chestnuts. Cover with a lid and cook for another 15 minutes. Serve.
Glass Noodles with Vegetables
This is a simple dish that combines shiitake mushroom, sesame seeds, scallions, carrots and cabbage. All of the ingredients are very close to Chinese people’s hearts. So, this dish is comfort food on the table during Chinese New Year. Preparation Time: 5 minutes Cooking Time: 15 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients: 3 carrots, cut into thin strips 4 oz. glass noodles 1 onion, quartered 2 tbsp. olive oil 2 oz. bean sprouts 1/4 cup water 1 stalk scallion, cut into thin strips 1 oz. cabbage, shredded 1/4 tsp. white pepper
5 shiitake mushrooms, cut into pieces 1 tbsp. oyster sauce Instructions: In a pot, warm up some water. Add the glass noodles and cover with a lid. Let them soak for 15 minutes. Drain well and keep aside for now. In a skillet, add the olive oil and toss the onion for 1 minute. Add the carrots, cabbage and mushrooms and cook for 3 minutes. Add the oyster sauce, pepper, scallion, water and bean sprouts and cover. Cook for 5 minutes. Add the noodles and coat well. Cook for 2 minutes and serve hot.
Sesame Seed Balls
These sesame balls are deep dried, and the texture of them is slightly crispy from the outside and soft from the inside. They are the perfect sweet for your Chinese New Year celebration. Preparation Time: 20 minutes Cooking Time: 10 minutes Serves: 20 balls Ingredients: 1/2 cup red bean paste 1 lb. rice flour 1 cup sesame seeds 1 1/4 cups dark brown sugar 1 1/4 cups water Olive oil for deep frying Instructions: In a large mixing bowl, add the rice flour. Pour in the water and mix well.
Transfer to a pot and bring it to boil. Add the brown sugar and stir until it dissolves. Make a dough and take off the heat. Knead well for 5 minutes. Divide the dough into 20 balls. Make them round balls and stuff each ball with the red bean paste. Roll them in sesame seeds and fry the balls until they are golden brown.
Char Siu Bao (Chinese BBQ Pork Buns)
These buns look very adorable, and they taste super delicious. The color white and red complement each other well, and they bring more colors to your Chinese New Year celebration. Preparation Time: 20 minutes Cooking Time: 10 minutes Serves: 2 Ingredients: 1 tbsp. hoisin sauce 1/8 tsp. Chinese five spice 1/4 tsp. sesame oil 1 tsp. xiao hsing wine 1 tsp. light soy sauce 1 tsp. dark soy sauce 1 tsp. honey 1 batch rice dough
1 green onion, sliced finely 1 cup char siu, chopped Instructions: First, in a large mixing bowl, combine the honey, char Siu, sesame oil, green onions, hoisin sauce, dark soy sauce, five spice, light soy sauce, and xiao hsing wine. On a plain surface, roll your rice dough into a long log. Cut the log into 12 pieces. Roll them and make round balls. Then, use a rolling pin to flatten each ball and fill using 1 tablespoon of the char siu mixture. Fold them like dumplings and seal the edges properly. Lastly, steam them for 10 minutes. Serve.
Chinese Almond Cookies
These cookies are very soft and dainty. They taste very light and delicious. The whole almond on top makes them look good and adds another layer of crunch to the cookies too. Preparation Time: 40 minutes Cooking Time: 15 minutes Serves: 30 cookies Ingredients: 2 cups flour 1 egg 1/8 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. baking powder 3/4 cup white sugar 1/2 cup shortening 2 1/2 tsp. almond extract 1/2 tsp. baking soda 1/2 cup butter
30 whole almonds Instructions: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Place wax paper on your cookie sheet. In a bowl, beat the egg. Add the white sugar and whisk until the sugar dissolves. Add the shortening and beat well for 2 minutes. Add the butter and almond extract and beat again for 2 minutes. Add the flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda. Knead into a soft dough and refrigerate with cover for 20 minutes. Roll it into 1 ½ inch thick round and cut into cookie shapes. Arrange them on the cookie sheet and top each cookie with almond. Bake for 15 minutes. Serve them after 20 minutes.
Chinese Sesame Cookies
These Chinese sesame cookies are simple but massive on your taste buds. They appeal to kids and adults equally. You should use both white and black sesame seeds to make them visually attractive. Preparation Time: 35 minutes Cooking Time: 15 minutes Serves: 30 cookies Ingredients: 2 cups all-purpose flour 1/4 tsp. salt 3/4 tsp. baking powder 3/4 cup white sugar 1 cup butter 1 egg 1 tsp. almond extract 1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 cup black and white sesame seeds 1/4 cup brown sugar Instructions: Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Grease your cookie sheet and place parchment paper on top. Next, beat the egg with the white sugar and brown sugar in a mixing bowl. Add the butter and beat for 3 minutes. Add the almond extract and beat well. Next, add the dry ingredients one by one. Make a dough. Knead well and wrap it tightly. Add to the fridge. Take it out after 20 minutes and roll it into a thick disc. Cut into rounds and add them to the prepared sheet. Then, sprinkle the black and white sesame seeds on top. Bake for 15 minutes.

Chinese people love peanuts, and they like to make them fancy with five spices, molasses, butter and corn syrup. They serve them as a great snack for the Chinese New Year celebration. Preparation Time: 1 hour Cooking Time: 10 minutes Serves: 2 Ingredients: 2 cups peanuts 1 tbsp. light corn syrup 2 tbsp. butter 1/2 tsp. five-spice powder 1 pinch sea salt 1/4 cup molasses Instructions:
Remove the skin of the peanuts. Next, add parchment paper on a baking sheet and grease using cooking spray. Melt the butter over medium heat. Add the corn syrup and molasses. Then, stir for 2 minutes. Add the five spice and sea salt. Mix well. Then, add the peanuts and mix well. Take off the heat. Spread the mixture on the baking sheet. Let it stand for 1 hour. Serve.
Baked Chinese New Year Cake (Nian Gao)
This dessert is another favorite to Chinese people as it contains the two vital ingredients that are a staple in every Chinese kitchen, red beans and rice flour. The texture is silky smooth. Preparation Time: 15 minutes Cooking Time: 50 minutes Serves: 6 Ingredients: 16 oz. sweet rice flour 1 can red azuki beans 1/2 cup butter 1 cup brown sugar 3 eggs 1 tbsp. baking soda 2 1/2 cups milk Instructions:
First, preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Use butter to grease a baking pan. In a mixing bowl, combine the butter with brown sugar and eggs. Next, beat well for 3 minutes and pour in the milk. Mix well and add the baking soda and rice flour. Fold in gently. Then, add half of the batter to the prepared baking pan. Add your red adzuki beans and pour in the remaining batter. Tap twice and bake for 50 minutes.
Chinese Almond Float Dessert
If you want to serve something chilled for your Chinese New Year party, then these individual dessert glasses are perfect. You can choose any mix of fruits here; there is no rule on what kind of fruits you have to put in them. Preparation Time: 35 minutes Cooking Time: 5 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients: 1 envelope gelatin, unflavored 1 cup boiling water 1 cup cold water 4 tbsp. sugar 1 cup evaporated milk 15 oz. canned fruit cocktail 2 tsp. almond extract Instructions:
Mix together the sugar and gelatin in a mixing bowl. Add the boiling hot water to the mixture. Stir well and add in the cold water, evaporated milk and almond extract. Mix well and add the mix into a square dish. Keep in the fridge until it is set. Cut your gelatin into small cubes. Divide the fruits in syrup in different serving glasses. Top with the gelatin cubes and serve cold.
Chinese Bow Tie Dessert with Brown Sugar and Honey
This is another perfect Chinese New Year party snack that is sweet, light and delicious. It looks like a bow tie which goes with the vibe of the celebration too. Preparation Time: 20 minutes Cooking Time: 15 minutes Serves: 20 bow ties Ingredients: Oil for frying 1 package egg roll wrappers For the Syrup: 1/2 cup honey 1/2 cup corn syrup 1/2 cup water
1 cup brown sugar Instructions: Place the wrappers on a flat surface. Cut them into four strips. Next, cut a slit in the middle of the strips. Place one strip on top of another and fold into a bow tie. Repeat with all the strips and fry them golden brown in oil. Then, in a large pan, add the water, corn syrup, honey and brown sugar. Stir for 5 minutes. Then, add the bow ties in the mixture. Take off the heat. Take the bow ties out from the syrup and let them harden. Serve.
Chinese Sponge Cake
If you are someone who never tried steamed cake before, then you must try it today as Chinese people cannot even think of celebrating their Chinese New Year without having it on the table. Preparation Time: 15 minutes Cooking Time: 25 minutes Serves: 6 Ingredients: 1 cup cake flour 5 eggs 3/4 cup sugar 1 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. cream of tartar 1 pinch sea salt 1 tsp. almond extract Instructions:
Grease your cake pan with cooking spray. Add wax paper to the cake pan. Shift the flour with sea salt and baking powder. Divide the egg whites from the egg yolks. Beat the egg whites using an electric beat in a bowl. Add in the cream of tartar. Beat again for 3 minutes. Add half of the sugar and beat well. Add the almond extract and beat well. In another bowl, beat the egg yolks with the rest of the sugar. Add the egg white mix and flour in and fold gently. Pour in the cake pan and steam it for 25 minutes. Serve.
Coconut Mango Pudding
Mango and coconut complement each other very well. The texture of this dessert is very creamy and silky because of the gelatin. You can adjust the sugar as you please. Preparation Time: 1 hour Cooking Time: 5 minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients: 1/2 cup hot water 2 ripe mangoes 1 cup coconut milk 1 packet gelatin 1/3 cup white sugar Coconut flakes to serve Instructions:
First, peel the mangoes and cut them into cubes. Next, add them to a blender and blend until smooth. Add the white sugar and coconut milk and blend again. Pour in a mixing bowl. Then, in another bowl, combine the hot water with gelatin and mix well. Let it cool down for 2 minutes. Then, mix with the coconut mango mix. Stir well and pour into individual cups. Chill until served.

The foods may be simple and easy to cook, but they have stories behind them. The reason that each dish is so special is they have stories behind each of them and their ties memories of their past that bring them closer to their root.
