Author of the article: Letters to the Editor Published May 28, 2023 • Last updated May 28, 2023 • 2 minute read It appears predictions of soft treatment by our special rapporteur have come true. The point raised by David Johnston and others is that classified material and information could not be revealed to the public through a public inquiry. Well, the same restrictions will apply to any “hearings” he has recommended, so the two options are a wash on that front. The difference is a public inquiry would have at least provided the ability to subpoena witnesses and compel testimony under oath. These are two critical criteria simple “hearings” do not provide. Once again, Justin Trudeau ducks accountability by virtue of having appointed such a close family friend. So much for the “independence” the public was promised. But, after eight years, what’s another broken Liberal promise? PM Socks could still do the right thing and override Johnston’s fourth conclusion/recommendation and go with a public inquiry anyway. At least what would be presented
would be under oath and witnesses could be compelled to appear. MIKE ALAIN OTTAWA (Don’t hold your breath that he’ll make the right decision. He hasn’t so far.) FOREGONE CONCLUSION What a waste of time and money it was to have David Johnston look into foreign interference. We all knew this would be the outcome. There are still doubts and mistrust of the Liberals, so I fail to see what they gained here. Sadly, it’s very likely that Mr. Johnston’s reputation will take a hit, and the guy at the top — he who knows nothing, is never told anything and is never involved in any way — will skate away again. BRIAN CLARK BARRHAVEN (Just think of our PM as the “Teflon Trudeau.”) ETNA CARBON TAX? Mount Etna has blown its top. Canadians, be prepared to be hit with another punishing carbon tax for the eruption as, somehow, the PM thinks everything that goes wrong in the world is the fault of Canadians and we must pay. I keep hoping his supporters see what he is doing to the country before it’s too late. PETE MCLELLAN BROCKVILLE (He doesn’t blame us for everything — sometimes he blames Russia!) TAGS WON’T HELP Whether we buy extra garbage bag tags or not, the same amount of garbage goes to the landfill, so this is just another tax and nothing more. It doesn’t change the timeline for our dump. Look around the world to other modern progressive countries that incinerate garbage.
TOMMY OWENS OTTAWA (Chances are city council will opt for both bag tags and burning waste.)
YOU SAID IT: A stinking farce https://ottawasun.com/opinion/letters/you-said-it-a-stinking-farce Here are today's Ottawa Sun letters to the editor. Author of the article: Letters to the Editor Published May 29, 2023 • Last updated May 29, 2023 • 2 minute read Did anyone with any political sense think that a very good friend of the family and fellow Laurentian elite David Johnston would actually conclude that there should be a public inquiry into foreign interference regarding Canadian elections? The fix was in right from the get-go when Mr. Freeze asked the former GG and good little Grit to supposedly look into such an undertaking. Jagmeet Singh, ever leery about possibly not qualifying for that taxpayer-funded golden goose pension come April 2025, was apparently quite upset, but not quite enough to topple the government over it. Oh, perish the thought. What a complete stinking farce. STEPHEN FLANAGAN OTTAWA (Surprised? Nope.) OH, WHAT A RELIEF Well, that’s certainly a relief. While we’ve been deeply concerned about Chinese interference into recent federal elections, David Johnston has now put Canadians’ minds at ease. The special rapporteur’s report states that he doesn’t recommend a public inquiry, as he had not seen any malfeasance or willful ignorance from the prime minister or his party, however he does still point fingers. Apparently, according to Mr. Johnston, CSIS and some media outlets share blame for Beijing’s infiltration and interference by leaking and
reporting on it. Given that the only action taken to date by the Justin Trudeau Liberals (expelling a Chinese diplomat) was forced upon them by the pressure these credible reports created, praise rather than blame is in order. It’s a relief to know that at least some agencies and organizations are still attempting to defend Canada’s democratic institutions. Maybe someday we’ll also have government that does. Article content AL WILLEY EDMONTON (Cross your fingers.) NO SURPRISE THERE What a crock! Most Canadians already knew the fix was in for Mr. Socks to once again avoid an investigation into his actions or lack thereof. Along with giving Justin Trudeau a pass, David Johnston has shown he has absolutely no integrity. I knew Johnston was not going to recommend an inquiry. Puppets are everywhere. To say I’m disgusted is beyond an understatement. This country has gone down the toilet over the past eight years, and that lies directly on Trudeau’s shoulders. SANDY JOHNSTON GREELY (Does this mean you think Johnston is a “sock puppet”?) WEEP FOR CANADA Re: Newspaper calls Trudeau a ‘buffoon’ after lecturing Italian PM, online edition, May 21 I weep for our beloved Canada.
In Italy, so many of our troops fought so valiantly during the Second World War, with more than 5,000 killed and 19,000 wounded. Canada was once revered by the Italian nation for those brave Canadians who fought for freedom, their sacrifice never to be forgotten. I weep because now, in Italy, we are known as a nation led by a buffoon. I weep for the contempt the entire world has for us because of this person … our leader … a buffoon … I weep. MARK O’HARA OTTAWA (We doubt they will forget Canadians’ sacrifices.)
