The Empyrean according to Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy Paradiso.
Holy Heaven's Spheres in the Paradiso The Empyrean is the highest sphere or the Ninth Sphere, These nine spheres are the Angel Hierarchy, organized into the nine ranks of traditional medieval thought: seraphim, cherubim, thrones; dominions or dominations, virtues, powers; principalities, archangels, angels. The angels are too numerous to count, as they concentrate on God and sing and praise HIS name. HIS grace, and love created the angels as "pure spirit" without any defects or impurities. They are as holy as HIM. A brilliant center point of light surrounded by nine spinning, dazzling spheres. The closer spheres are more radiant than those further away because of their absorption of God's essence. Within the Empyrean are the Angelic Host: those angels created by God who never left Paradise. Instead of encircling the Father they fly rapidly back and forth between God, Holy Spirit and His Son. The lower levels of the Empyrean, the "sacred soldiery": those mortal souls who, through their sanctity, encircle God the Father within their nine spheres. Amen * * *
