Preface Throughout our 20 or so years of training residents and fellows in otologic surgery, we felt that available textbooks did not provide sufficient descriptions and illustrations to allow a novice surgeon to grasp and perform many otologic procedures. By nature, surgeons learn by visual imprinting. Hence, this book was developed as an in-depth atlas of otologic and neuro-otologic surgery, providing step-by-step instructions with detailed illustrations, in order to better prepare the surgeon for care of his or her patients. This atlas is directed at both otolaryngologists in training and those in clinical practice. Primary emphasis has been placed on the more common procedures relating to the middle ear and the mastoid. Drawing from years of experience, we present our “pearls of wisdom” and helpful hints to help ease the management of more technically difficult situations. We hope that the information will provide a sound foundation for ear surgery and a springboard for those who pursue training in more complicated temporal bone and skull base procedures. The atlas draws considerably on the techniques and the expertise imparted to us by our teachers and on the experience acquired in interactions with our trainees.
