I t s eems l ikely t hat t he m ain c limatic d ifference b etween t he p resent d ay a nd t he M esozoic h igh l atitudes i s t he l ow a mbient t emperature w hich d epresses m etabolic p rocesses s uch a s t ransport a nd g rowth r ather t han p hotosynthesis . F or t he l atter , t he s upply o f l ight e nergy a t h igh l atitudes w ould a ppear t o b e a dequate t o e xplain t he h igh p roductivity i n t he M esozoic p rovided t here h ad b een h igher a mbient t emperatures .

I t a ppears t o h ave a p ositive a ttraction f or i onized s ilica a nd i s most c ommonly f ossilized b y c alcification ( in c alcium c arbonate ) o r b y p yritization ( in i ron s ulphide) o r i ncorporated ( coalified , i n v arying d egree ) i n p eat o r l ignite . E nvironmental d eductions m ay b e m ade f rom t he t ype o f s iliceous p ermineralization o f t he w ood ( Francis, 1 983 , 1 984 , ( this v olume)) .
