CHAPTER ONE : THE EVIDENCE fleet with the promise of freedom. But the presence in them of two trierarchs makes this an unlikely possibility since although two trierarchs was regular practice at this time for financial reasons both would hardly have been on board at one time.
1.3.3. The third group of inscriptions relating to the trieres consist of important. These, known as the naval inventories, lists of the ships and gear in the naval dockyards at Piraeus. and intermittently they cover the period 377/6-323-2 BC. The they give falls under the following headings;-

1.3.3.1. Number of Ship-sheds IG 2'·'1628 (326/5) 481,553 : 372 ship-sheds of which 82 were in Munichia, 195 in Zea and 94 in Kantharos. In IG 22 1611 6 (357 /6) some of the triereis listed are hupaithrioi, not under cover. 1.3.3.2. Number of Ships In the surviving fragments of the earlier naval inventories the total number of ships in the dockyards is not given. IG 2:,, 1611 1-9 ( 357/6) records a total of 283 ships in the dockyard, and IG 22 1613 284302 (353/2) a total of 349 triereis in the dockyard and at sea. IG 2�,, 1628 481,553 gives 360 triereis and a number llf .). They were each a good deal more than twice the length of the ship. The fact that they were issued in pairs, as well as other considerations, suggests that they were fitted and tightened one pair at a time. As was seen, the rope needed to be tight, and would thus have required constant tightening and before very long replacement. The entry 'pieces of hypozomata' in 1610 suggests that they broke in service. Pairs of rudders are recorded (1606 (374/3 BC> 34,1608 (373/2 BC) 24 and 1611 (357/6 BC) 23-4) and of one rudder it is noted that its pteryx, wing, is broken.. A secondary means of propulsion is also attested with the provision of Two masts are regularly masts and sails and of a variety of rope tackle. listed, a main mast and a boat mast (akateios), similarly main sails and boat sails ( 1604 (377 /6BC) passim. Two sorts of sails, thin/light and thick/heavy occur in three inscriptions after 330 BC < 1627 665,1629 371, 1631 415-17). The absence of yards (keraiai) from the lists of wooden gear is surprising and difficult to explain. Possibly they were regarded as inseparable from the masts, or, more probably, from the sails, as in Homer. A further detail of the oarsystem given by the inventories is the fitting of askomata (leather sleeves) to some of the oarports. Since the purpose of such sleeves was clearly to prevent the entry of water either in rough weather or when the ship heeled under sail, the ports so fitted must have been those of the thalamian oars. The importance of askomata is shown by the fact that in the earliest naval inventory to survive, 1604 (377/6 BC), it is noted against each ship in the list either that the askomata are already fitted or that someone named has them in his possession, or that the dockyard has the money for them, or that they are missing. Their importance is confirmed in Aristophanes Frogs 364 where they are included with flax and pitch as contraband articles whose export was forbidden in time of war. The value of a trieres' as.lromata is given as 43 drachmas 2 obols in the inventory abovementioned, five drachmas apiece if the number of thalamians was 52 as is possibly the case in the fifth century, and might have been the case in 377/6 BC. There are numerous entries of screens, of two kinds, canvas and hair, for defence against the weather and enemy missiles < e.g.1611 244-249), and one entry of screens of leather, mare efficient for the latter purpose .
