are the titles of the original edition of the work, of three volumi's ; our Nos. 38638-40, \nfra, describe other editions. Much of La Hontan's matter is evidently drawn from authentic sources, but The work has not received his pretended discovery of Long River is wholly fictitious. tlie amount of credit to which it is really entitled, although written by a man of more Had he written no other v/ork than the tlian ordinary learning and intelligence. " New Voyages," it is probable that it would have experienced no lack of esteem, but his Relations, even when scrupulously exact, have felt the influence of the skepticism which he infused into his subsequent work. &e " Eiographie Univev^v-lle," Charlevoix, and Faribault, No. 357. In enumerating the succeeding editions I do it with some difiidence, for there are some variations which are not very clear; lor example, in the edition of 1742, the " Suite" reads as Vol. 11., and the " Memoires" as Vol. 111. Some editions include the " Dialogues," otiiers do not. To be quite sure about these details, one ought to have them all under the eye at the same time, and that has not been possible. Dr. Shea thinks there were editions in 1709 and 1731.

Other editions, 1707 and 1715. Some copies of I'Honore's edition have a preface of sixteen pages. After noticing the censure of the style it says "All the Letters have been almost recast, and it is believed that the style will appear more pure, concise and simple, and with a little more finatc in the wit. ... There has been no scruple in probability where it lacked ... The best of the ' Dialogues' have been taken, and they have been adapted to the new style of the Voyages." The alteration is mainly in the " Dialogues" which are rewritten ; the Voyages to Portugal and Denmark are omitted, and the whole work is thus brought into two volumes. Vol. 11. has the following title :

I.owndes quotes an edition, Dublin^ 1738, which is doubtless intended for Brickeir« plagiarism from Lawson. The reader will not fail to discover that, except the one reprinted at Raleigh, these editions are, in fact, all alike; the changes in the titlepages are simply those made by the then publishers. It was first issued as a part of Stevens' " Collection of Voyages." It is " the relation of a man of acute habits of observation, some intelligence, and entire veracity. ... Lawson was a land surveyor in the employment of the government, and was the unhappy cause of the exile of the Tuscarora tribe to New York, and its consequent incorporation into the Iroquois Confederacy, by which its name was changed to the Six Nations."
